Re "Shadows In the Night", I kept thinkin' when I first heard of it, "How fluckin' bad can this album be?" Boy, was I wrong.

This is an album about a man looking back over life, love, and ruminating about what it all means to him. That Dylan took songs from the "great American songbook" and cast them in his own interpretation is marvelous. His band is superb. Think of all of his contemporaries who've done the great American songbook according to the book. Many of their efforts these days sound like bs being tossed across the pasture. Give Dylan credit for finding a new way to look at and present the great American songbook.

Yeah, his voice ain't always great and he misses the notes on a few tunes on "Shadows", but it works in the context of the album. On this album Dylan is one man saying these songs were part of my life and were part of what did and does influence me. The songs and Dylan come across as sad, regretful, wistful, haunting, questioning and so much more. The album puts me in mind of Sinatra's "A Man Alone" album where Sinatra sang songs about a man confronting his history, love and life.

I call "Shadows In the Night" a beautiful piece of work and art. The Stones should dare be so adventurous and inventive on their next album if they ever decide to record again as a band.

My 78-year old father (no rock & roll fan) called me literally screaming about how good it is (someone at work gave him the CD). This only goes to show that Bob still has the ability to delight, surprise, and confound. God bless him.

Your Dad is still working at 78? God bless him. Maybe we can get another 6 or 7 years outta the Stones. peace

I find it very annoying when artists don't update their official sites. Dylan's hasn't been touched since last summer.

huh? - that´s wrong, at least for the US-version of his site: [www.bobdylan.com] (updates with reviews, link to an interview etc

plus: when Dylan is on tour the setlist get updated on a daily basis, see:

well apparently the Stones could never write a tune like Mr. Tambourine Man and Dylan could never sing Satisfaction.

but check out his live versions of Brown Sugar (performed more then 30 times in 2002)

I love almost all of Dylan's work, especially his latter decade or so.

I bought Shadows in the Night the Thursday before last weekend. Played it NON STOP for 4 days....

...trying, TRYING to get it.

Kudos for him still putting stuff out, but this is just plain BORING. Dullsville. Sorry.

I doubt it. It's outta high rotation now and relegated to give it a burl when I get sick of whatever else it is I am playing. Currently the Stones lovely goats head soup l.p.

No mention of the Stones, nor were any of them present as far as I am aware.
Macca sent in a video tribute. Ringo and wife, Olivia Harrison present.
Given their links over the years I find this rather suprising.

Anyway, if we look teh recent long interview (that is linked here), Dylan seems to keep especially "Mick" as some kind of point of reference today, and there aren't many he acknowledges. I think there is a mutual respect between those two big 60's survivors.

Some of Dylan's best is the last 4 albums and I know his whole catalog, beter than the electric Blonde on Blonde/Highway 61 ear even if this is some of his most famous music.

Bob Dylan's speech

Bod Dylan gave what I thought was a brilliant speech the other night.

A must read for a musician for fan of music.

Dylan accomplished a lot with that speech. he articulated his response to just about every criticism ever directed toward him.

even better he did it with humility and sly humor..

I'm glad he said what he did about the people who helped him and who made hits out of his songs.

I'm glad he's still touring, I hope I get to see him and his band again.

Agree, great speech...I had started a thread about this but it had been combined into the "Dylan 2015" thread. I thought it desrved its own thread.

I doubt it'll happen, but it would be great if the whole Musicares event honoring Dylan, all the performances, Bob's speech, was made available..

Interesting speech must have been the longest he has ever spoken. He does
Not compromise his values and draws a distinct line between right and wrong.
Friendship combined with loyalty is obviously important to him.

That man has an amazing way with words. He passes it off his great lyrics as a product of his constant listening to others but no one does it as good as him. He has a god given talent. Love his lyrics, love his speeches and love his book. I just wish Bob, would start constantly writing and speaking "until the day there is no more days", because I'm all ears. peace

Dylan is my favorite artist. I really like Shadows of the Night. Of course his mid 60's albums are iconic, but I really listen most to "ModBob", Cowboy-bluesy Bob of the past 20 years. Oh Mercy, Time Out Of Mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times, Tell Tale Signs, Together Through Life, Tempest and now Shadows Of The Night (throw in World Gone Wrong too). I can never be satiated with Modern Day Bob & throw in "best of Live versions of the Never Ending Tour). Of course the live Bob is hit or miss, with drastic difference of quality night to night , or even song to song lol. I do wish he would of put more tender loving care regarding his studio takes / performences of the songs "Pay in Blood", Duquesne Whistle, song Tempest, & Forgetful Heart, but hey It's all Good.... I hope he keeps working his magic. Long live Mr Dylan! The MEZ

Come On Indeed! If CO meant to write LODGER then I am super impressed -- Bowie's most underrated album IMO and definitely in my personal top 5!

One interesting thing we did learn is Bob reads his reviews - which surprises me.
To me his speech had much the same feel as his writing style within his book.
