only thing i find This Place is Empty rather dull

As good and as solid as A Bigger Bang was, I don't think it merits the term "classic" whether potentially or otherwise--for the simple fact that until a few days ago they have completely avoided playing anything off of ABB since having set out on this most recent batch of mini-tours 2 years ago.

A classic is something that is indispensable. Tattoo You is a classic, because Start Me Up is an inevitable part of their set list, a song everyone knows and wants to hear, just as much as Brown Sugar.

But it doesn't seem that A Bigger Bang could have been a classic, know matter what the song list or length, if the band were only going to put that album on the shelf and forget about performing it after just 2 years.

that's why i wrote "coulda" because i also don't consider it a classic as is.
call it what you like. your argument would have been something difficult to
counter a few days ago, after SOL in Rome i don't feel like i even need to.
complain all you want, if it wasn't for ABB, i could have never in my life
walked into a record store to buy the new Stones Album on release day.

Of the three post Wyman albums, A Bigger Bang is right there in the middle. Voodoo Lounge still had some pop on the bass that they let get away from them. Bridges is very dated, a nice experiment that didn't age well. And A Bigger Bang has the sin of being too familiar to some old Stones tunes, but still has some originality. I thought Rough Justice was their best single in the Post Wyman era. (Although Doom & Gloom may be the most novel).

I don't even own Voodoo or Bridges, but I do keep a copy of A Bigger Bang. It's hard to think we may look back on it someday as the very last Stones album. That would be a little hard to take. But asking for them to top those three albums at this late date is asking for way too much.

a fair way of criticism, and completely realistic. though we don't seem to share
that many viewpoints, i have to agree with your take. though, as child of the 90s,
i have to say that for example Might as well get Juiced doesn't sound dated at all.
maybe just a twisted perception caused by early damage from my dad's car stereo =)
but why didn't anybody yet comment on my idea to change Streets of Love
for Old Habits die hard?!? that's where i see the potential for "classic"
just imagine what Keith would've played on it. and imagine
Sheryl Crow guesting on an actual Stones Record.

also, Out of Control didn't sound too dated in the last two versions i've recently heard =)

1. Rough Justice
2. Let Me Down Slow
3. It Won't Take Long
4. Streets Of Love
5. Back Of My Hand
6. She Saw Me Coming
7. Biggest Mistake
8. This Place Is Empty
9. Oh No, Not Your Again
10. Laugh, I Nearly Died OR Sweet Neo Con (one of the two)
11. Infamy

That right there, IMO, is easily their best album since Some Girls.

if you're no man of wealth, then of taste. it's also nice because
one could press it on an actual LP. but come on guys, i was really
hoping for some opinions on how a Stones' version of Old Habits die hard
would sound?!? and how great it would be if switched for Streets of Love?
Jagger could have used the schmaltz for Alfie. it's too late for ABB
to become a Classic, but they could still do Old Habits live. at least once??

at least he showed the decency to retire to Texas
without feeling need to comment all the following
administration's activities. so it'd be probably enough
to ban him into the rearmost corner of our hypothetical
ABB-Special Fan DVD? because most of us seem to agree
that We don't wanna go Home should've been on the
actual album. a well-hidden Neo-Con would have been
admired by all fans lucky enough to find it in the
(dazzling) DVD-menu. great sticky-topic too. just like
Under the Radar. which isn't exactly inspired either

Don't Wanna Go Home is pure by-numbers. I don't understand the affection for that one at all.

Under The Radar is cool and could have been considered for the album instead of songs like "Look What The Cat Dragged In" or "Sweet Neo Con".

Oh No Not You Again could have been a classic but I think it was just a chord change or two out on the chorus. If only it had gone down in key...they almost had something there with that one. Everytime I hear it, I wish that on the part ending in ..."you again"...if only right after, they went down in key instead of higher. It needed a little more darkness and the lead line on top of it I didn't like. I don't know if anyone will understand what I mean...
Rough Justice is good though. I need to pull this one out again. It's been a couple of years.

I'd rather imagine that for their posthumously released 'Duets' album.

I'm in complete agreement with your picks, but I find it amusing that while we all want a shorter album, we can't agree on what songs to delete.

This one works well (for me) in car, basement, bar & sofa (have yet to try the bedroom winking smiley ):

4. Streets of love
5. Back of my hand
6. Biggest mistake

*(vinyl break)*

7. Infamy
8. Sweet neo-con
9. Laugh (I nearly died)
10. This place is empty
11. Oh no, not you again
12. Driving to fast

that's why i considered to shove the songs on which
we can't seem to agree on the hypothetical bonus DVD.
myself, i'm not sure if LWTCDI should stay in or not.
and after Rome, i don't know where to put SOL either:

of course Don't wanna go Home isn't anything special.
a good B-side, that's it. but in '05, it was the last
number of the new batch of songs and it was the Stones
telling us they don't wanna leave the party! romantic

Filler is filler. Calling this "classic" is an abuse of the language.

intention behind this thread is trying to reach some kind of
agreement on the issue which '05 songs are fillers, which ain't.

I like ABB. If this disc were released by a handsome, or pretty, 20-Sometnig-Year-Old Band, it would have been praised but because it is The Stones? Ho-Hum. Old hat.

Got it, but people throw around words like "classic" in relation to this material and it simply isn't.

We can imagine from now on until...

However, there are surely songs which they promoted more than others, which, had Virgin had their will, could have made a 12 song album:

Rough Justice
Let Me Down Slow
It Won't Take Long
Rain Fall Down
Streets Of Love
Back Of My Hand
Biggest Mistake
This Place Is Empty
Oh No Not You Again
Dangerous Beauty
Laugh, I Nearly Died
Infamy

She Saw Me Coming, sounds like an album filler.
Sweet Neo Con, was already before album completion considered dropped by Jagger because of it's political content.
Look What The Cat Dragged In
Driving To Fast, those two's placing on the album suggests that they were not highly regarded by the band.

for the first thread i actually started myself,
i wanted to be on the safe side, so i just copied
"Classic that could've been - 1994" the thread by
Send It To Me, which i admit is probably a more
promising topic to discuss. please understand my
affection for ABB as it was the only new Stones
Album i could purchase on release day.
you know that excitement.

i don't wanna sound revisionist as i am german. =)
but i'm thoroughly convinced that, if ABB came out
as i sequenced it (again: Old Habits die Hard as a
Stones Song! why does no-one want to share an opinion
on that??) we would today regard it as the classic
of the latter-day Stones opus. feel free to comment^^
