***Press Release: Live At The Rainbow to be Released in September***

QUEEN TO RELEASE RARE RECORDING OF LANDMARK CONCERT

QUEEN: LIVE AT THE RAINBOW ’74

Previously unreleased first live album finally surfaces after 40 year wait.

Sunday 31st March 1974 is a landmark date in the history of rock music. It is now celebrated in the multi format release of a rare recording made at legendary London venue The Rainbow, of a concert by a then up-and-coming band called Queen. Few who turned up for that iconic performance could have predicted they would go on to become arguably the world’s best and most successful rock group, although many more may have suspected it after this stunning show.

Among the unique material contained in this release are over a dozen tracks never previously released on any official Queen live album. The release will come in CD, Vinyl and standard DVD or SD Blu-Ray formats available as standard releases or special limited edition sets as well as digital formats.

That concert, being heard live for the first time in the soon to be released Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74, marked the culmination of the band’s countrywide tour, their first as headliners - hot on the heels of a tour supporting Mott the Hoople, late in 1973, on which they were widely regarded as having blown the hit band off the stage. Queen got rave reviews, almost unheard of for a support band, and it was obvious that in future they would be top of the bill. The band’s momentum had been building since the release of their eponymous album in July 1973 and, following their success on the Mott tour, at the beginning of 1974 they were tipped as Band of the Year in UK music paper Disc and Music Echo.

Just before the March Rainbow gig, Queen performed their new single Seven Seas of Rhye on must-see UK TV music show Top of the Pops. The highly coveted slot was a lucky break - they filled in for an absent David Bowie, who was unavailable - and the band made the most of it, delivering a thrilling performance that pushed the song into the Top 10.

Although the group now had a first hit single under its belt, and second album Queen II had just been released to critical acclaim, many felt that playing The Rainbow was overambitious. It was the premier London venue of the time, on a par with L.A.’s Palladium and New York’s Fillmore East. But the band had paid its dues, slugging it out in clubs and college halls for four years, and never doubting their own potential. The band’s confidence was vindicated when the venue quickly sold out the capacity of more than 3,000 seats – with some fans paying as much as £1.20 for a ticket!

Queen’s performance was spectacular from the second that Freddie Mercury strutted onto the stage in his soon to become trademark white “eagle suit”, a tight -fitting number specially made for him by top fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, which featured flowing winged sleeves. He pranced and posed, capturing the audience in seconds with his extraordinary voice and stage presence, while Brian May provided the counterpoint with his remarkable and ground-breaking guitar playing. The powerful “engine room” (as they liked to call it) of drummer Roger Taylor and bass player John Deacon completed a sound unlike anything British audiences had previously heard. Enraptured fans clapped and cheered, and gave the band a standing ovation.

That electrifying show was recorded by Roy Thomas Baker, co-producer of Queen's first four studio albums, and slated to be the band's third album (and debut live album) - a career defining release like James Brown's Live At The Apollo or The Who's Live At Leeds. Intended to be a recording that captured the magic of a live band firing on all cylinders, Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 would undoubtedly have been a big success. But Queen’s ferocious creative momentum produced a stack of new songs begging to be recorded and instead of releasing the live album the band went into the studio to record what was to become 1974's breakthrough album, Sheer Heart Attack. As a result the already completed Rainbow live album was shelved and consigned to the archives.

Later in 1974 Queen had their first chart-topping single, Killer Queen, which encapsulated their brand of driving rock and clever lyrics. It appeared on Sheer Heart Attack, which was released in the autumn, was a massive hit and remains to this day many fans’ favourite Queen album. To celebrate this success and crown a remarkable year, Queen returned to The Rainbow in November 1974 for two sell-out gigs that were even more spectacular than the one in March. These concerts included the typically flamboyant performance of Now I’m Here with which they had been wowing audiences on the tour. It featured Freddie apparently appearing in a spotlight on opposite sides of the stage almost simultaneously. The concerts received massive acclaim from fans and critics alike, and won over many who had until then doubted the band’s potential. In this year, Queen also undertook their first concerts in Australia, USA, Sweden, Finland, Holland, Belgium and Spain.

Now, a remarkable 40 years later, Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 has finally surfaced from the archives, providing an invaluable record of emerging superstars demonstrating their talent.

Queen, Virgin Records and Eagle Rock Entertainment are proud to announce that Queen: Live at the Rainbow ‘74 will be released on 8th September 2014 (UK on Virgin Records) and 9th September 2014 (US through Hollywood Records) in a variety of formats all newly mixed and mastered to the highest contemporary standard. These range from a standard two CD package, a DVD, an SD Blu-ray, a gate-fold double vinyl (including an audio reproduction of the aforementioned original live album), a quadruple vinyl boxed set, to a super deluxe collector’s edition. This comprehensive and fascinating package includes two CDs, a DVD and Blu-Ray, a 60 page hardback book containing many rare photographs, and various items of memorabilia such as reproductions of the tickets, show souvenir programme and poster, as well as material from the band members’ personal archives. (Full details of the various packages which will be released can be found at the end of this release). Vinyl and super deluxe formats are released as limited editions.

These recordings capture Queen at that time in all their glory: the dramatic stage presence, the highly original self-penned repertoire of songs, high-energy performances coupled with stunning melodic and harmonic content, and the uncompromising perfectionist approach to every aspect of their performance which is still maintained to this day.

Queen dazzled their audiences in 1974 with an unforgettable show delivered with a skill and confidence which belied their youth. The tape machines were rolling, capturing the highly electric performances. Now, to mark the 40th anniversary of these legendary shows, here, finally, is Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 - lovingly restored, edited, mixed and digitally mastered, and including much footage never previously seen. It is a collection every Queen fan will want to possess.

Queen will be touring North America, Asia and Australia this summer with virtuoso vocalist Adam Lambert. The tour kicks off June 19th at Chicago's United Center. Tour dates and ticket information can be found at www.queenonline.com.

Some fascinating (and noteworthy) facts about Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74:

The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, (from Queen II) was inspired by a painting by Richard Dadd (1817-1886) which now hangs in the Tate Gallery, having been donated to the gallery by war poet Siegfried Sassoon. The song is by far the most significant song on the Rainbow project in terms of rarity. The March 31st show was the last time Queen performed it in concert and this is the only known live recording of the song. The track’s appearance on this package is likely to be the biggest surprise on the set.

Great King Rat and Modern Times Rock'n'Roll (from the first album), See What A Fool I've Been (the non-album B-side of Seven Seas of Rhye) and Flick of the Wrist (from Sheer Heart Attack), are also included on an official Queen live product for the first time.

The November show was released in part (not full) on the 1992 VHS, part of the little-known Box of Tricks package, but the March show has never been officially released.

On the 1992 VHS Liar and Keep Yourself Alive (from first album), Father To Son (from Queen II) and Jailhouse Rock only featured in part, whereas now on Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 they are full versions for the first time. Modern Times Rock'n'Roll, Flick Of The Wrist, Seven Seas of Rhye and Big Spender (all from November) were NOT on the VHS video, so this is the first time they have emerged.

The following 15 songs from March and November Rainbow 1974 concerts have never appeared on any official Queen live album before (this excludes video): Procession, Father to Son, Ogre Battle, Son and Daughter, White Queen, Great King Rat, The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, Modern Times Rock'n'Roll, Liar, See What A Fool I've Been, Flick of the Wrist, In the Lap of the Gods (not to be confused with In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited), The March of the Black Queen, Bring Back that Leroy Brown and Stone Cold Crazy.

Nice. I was centre front row for the November show so may possibly see the 16 year old me on this release. (The parts of the show previously released didn't show the audience at all so that's not a given.) Anyway, it will be a great memory to see the full show in DVD quality.

Fairy feller's master stroke doesn't sound like a "live" recording. I have listened to Queen's live early recordings and they weren't so perfect...

wow, this should be really something.i saw them in early 76 when opera had just been released and they were doing basically that sheer heart attack set with a few from opera thrown in-scary good.

i mean literally scary good-i was really high and had never heard ogre battles before ...that song freaked me the fck out,one of the best and i mean best as in top five shows i've ever seen.

as popular as queen has become i still dont think people realize how great they really were.

I did saw them on the galileo galileo tour and was very dissapointed. I like their debut album but cant even listen to the entire greatest hits. Just not my cup of tea.

I've actually never really liked them that much (Opera aside) and thought they were very overrated. Only until a few months ago when I heard the first 3 albums did I realize "geez, these guys are amazing." I mean, I still don't think they reinvented the wheel like diehards think, but they were a force to be reckoned with. Always liked Taylor and Deacon, but gained newfound respect for Brian May with the early stuff, and the early stuff really shows Freddie as a great SINGER, whereas I do know him more as the icon from the 80s.

And this live album is a perfect companion. It shows them being themselves and shows Freddie and the band in all their glory. It really shows how they could blow people way off the stage. What I've heard so far sounds great and I hope to hear the full concert really soon. Looks like this CD for me will be the November show, with bonus tracks I'll grab from the March show (Fairy Stroke and Giant King Rat) since the rest are basically identical.

As far as I know, this is the only (known) or at least recorded live version of FFMS ... So we can't compare, but those Queen-Freaks Out there state, that Rainbow isn't much overdubbed! And IMo FFMS sounds very life, drums, bass, piano, one guitar and Freddie ... just give the Queen II-Version a listen!

Unfortunately, I never saw the original Queen. I loved them since Sheer HeartAttack.. I am 50, musically they were simply IMO brilliant. News of the World was huge ..huge.. In a year of big releases, it made a statement. It's late is my fav on that record, and All Dead is a great piece.. melancholy blues is a go to song after a hard day, sipping a single malt. Queen, while big here in US, it wasn't like the UK, I don't know if it's true, but was told Queen was the biggest act in the UK.. And adored the most.. Including Stones and Beatles.. Just what I heard while taking over pints in a bar... And they did stop coming here.. Shame..our loss. Live Aid here Zep was the draw.. Wembley..to this day if asked who played on that day.. Queen is what was remembered, I have that DVD.. UK Aid had the best.. Watching the crowd with Freddie, sill brings a tear. I seen Stones 42 times, like many here 100's of concerts, From gladys knight, Beth hart( I wish opened for stones), to Barbara, and Sabbath and more. I love Zep but I don't regret not seeing them, Bowie at Roseland Ballrm premiering Heathen record was Tops my best... I do regret not going to the Spectrum in Philly to see Queen.Freddie's death is still felt, Lennon while a great loss, Freddie was our friend.. I miss him.. At the tribute show, Plant was asked what made Freddie special..he simply said " that voice". The US got it, but too late.
Innuendo was just incredible, the story in making it is nothing short of a fighter not giving up, yet accepting. Frail, tired, looking sick.. Freddie from a wheelchair and on Oxygen at times.. Still performed great Videos, and pushed that voice.. And Brian wasn't sure it would be finished, Freddie 90 lbs wet gave us a masterpiece.. And a song "show must go on", in great form and lyric, that voice didn't fail, proved even with death in his face..his art, craft, style and professionalism was a gift from above.. Still inspiring, and legendary..anyway, I did see Queen this year in Philly with Adam Lambert, mock if you want, I had to go.. Adam was in great voice, band was perfect to me anyway.. I had a chance in HSchool to see Queen, I didn't go... This was personal to me.. The Crown Jewels is my fav Boxset and it's incased in glass... If there are some who hasn't seen this tour, or the real band.. Go...Freddie is there with ever word sung.. Is it still a tribute... F@uck yeah it is.. It's also a promise by his mates to carry on.. That's my story...
The greatest front man in Rock since the invasion , Mick, Daultry,Plant, Paul, Or from here Morrison, Tyler, DL Roth or others while great ... None, not one, compared to Freddie..he was the best,a showman, entertainer, musician and artist, and very smart businessman, the whole band was...the making of his last video.
Music and delivery, not like MJ ( while gifted) or a spinal tap thing, had to be arranged and expressed through musicality and scale.. On innuendo - death had to wait for him.

These are the days of our lives video, exposed, open, unashamed, sick, but the voice delivered, like saying.. Yes it's me, I am still here, f-off to ignorant ones, take this vocal range, I won't hide from you..I will go when I am damn ready! My take anyway.

[youtu.be]

Here:
[youtu.be]

He was the bravest modern pop/rock musician ever.. AIDs was a plague then, ignorance was the way.. No funding, and those who got sick were shamed, and wished to die or be silent... Freddie passed right before treatment
Just a little longer.
He held it back for a while, but when he did announce it, he stood tall.. Never coward! The older Frontmen we have left, to enjoy and see live.. None IMO would for all to see,put vanity and ego aside, and .give like him to the end

Long this maybe, but I do miss him. Happy Birthday Freddie, rest in peace!

Definitely picking this up, Queen 2 and Sheer Heart Attack are my favourite Queen albums. Love stuff like Ogre Battle and March Of The Black Queen.

By the time i saw them in 1986 the early songs had pretty much gone from set and they were a very different band really, so i'm always envious of those who saw them at this time.

The Christmas Eve Concert from 1975 is overdue a release. I saw it on first showing, 24/12/75 and again the following year. I wore out my audio of it. I have the thing on unofficial DVD, but it needs an official release with all the unbroadcast songs included.

I think Queen were a great band, really talented musicians. The first five albums were great, but they released a lot of stinkers after that - albums with two or three songs for stadiums and the rest were fillers. But they still put on an amazing live show. Then they released the Innuendo - a true masterpiece. But the Made In Heaven released after Freddie's demise was really weak and I bet this current release will be even weaker.

I think Queen were an amazing live band. I have unfortunately never had a chance to see them with Freddie, the only time I saw them was in 2008, which was a sort of a Queen revival of course, but May and Taylor were very good and I am happy I had at least that opportunity.

Edit: I see this was moved into another thread, so I will just explain, that when I wrote about a weak release, I referred to the new CD, not to the Live at The Rainbow, which I am sure is a killer DVD and I will surely buy it.

Here:

Love your passion about this...Freddie was indeed great. Didn't like some of the musical choices in the 80s, but I guess I can say that of a lot of the greats.

Can anyone give us a review of this release? I am contemplating purchasing it. The vinyl version, of course.

Would like to do so, but my english ....eye rolling smiley

If you like Queen, this release is simply a MUST HAVE, there is no discussion at all (it´s praised by queen fans and the press!). It´s not just the great and heavy performance, there are rare songs from the first three Albums (Flick of The Wrist, FFMS, Great King Rat, etc) and soundwise it is almost unbelievable good! Do yourself a favour and get a version with both concerts (March and November). This is the LP-Version (I got it on 2-CD):

i still need to pick this up. this imo is queen in their prime and mercury in his prime. by the early 80's the band had cut back their touring just a bit because mercury's voice started becoming more hit and miss with extensive touring. i think queens greatest strength as a band was that may and taylor could also sing well and the harmonies. this enabled the band to help cover a few of mercury's "off" nights that became more frequent in the 80's.

Been listening to this quite a bit over the last couple of weeks and it really is an essential purchase for anyone who ever liked Queen. As I said at the beginning of this thread I was at the November concert and whilst I never saw Queen again I always felt it was downhill from there so I didn't miss much having already seen them in their prime. The later version of the live band was entertaining with its mass singalongs, (Radio Ga Ga, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions), but the 1974 group was a vastly superior incarnation. The double CD and DVD are both fantastic and the audio quality is superb. The whole band play brilliantly while Mercury's voice was never better.
