Mick got trapped in his borderline camp-singing style, just like Keith did with the open G-stuff. By «trapped» I mean that people expect to hear more of it. Those sounds became «them».

But Keith found a way out of it in the 70s. There are barely any open G-guitars from him on Some Girls, Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You. He sort of went back to basic rockabilly, Berry, rock'n'roll.

That said, Mick has his moments of sincerity, even today.

I imagine he did, I mean ~90% of country singers don’t actually have accents the way they sing. It’s all part of the show, doesn’t mean they aren’t sincere.

I don't understand why some people feel the singer should sound "sincere". Sincerity can be so boring. Humorless. One-dimensional. Celine Dion may sound sincere, but I wouldn't listen to her if you paid me. With Jagger, I listen because he is so much fun to listen to and has a thousand different personae. He is incredibly multidimensional, and I don't give a rat's ass if he actually believes what he's singing as long as he takes me somewhere far, far away. And, most of the time, he does that, better than any other singer in the world.

Too late to the party, reading myself up on a few threads, I arrive at the latest quoted post, which point of view to a large degree approaches my own. Only that I would like to make a distinction between 1) sing from the heart, 2) sing sincerely. It seems that many posters in this thread want Mick always to sing from the heart and are upbraiding him when he does not.

Then I would say that a socalled mannered Mick vocal, instead of singing from the heart, lyrics he cannot (or cannot any longer or cannot always) put himself behind, it could be considered, (also) becomes Mick's way of being sincere in his song delivery. He somehow thereby distances himself from what he cannot personify.

Silver Train - There was a train rolling from France to Belgium for fans in 1973 cause the stones couldn't perform there.

The band decided to organise a concert in Brussels for the French audience; RTL Radio chartered a train for French fans.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - This Train

I realized that this is pretty much a Rockabilly song. The Stones' version of a Memphis shuffle.
I bet Elvis Presley would've sung the hell out of that song. With James Burton, Ronnie Tutt, Jerry Scheff...oh my God. I was concentrating on Jagger's basic guitar, and it hit me.

Honestly, for me this is prime Stones.
Stu is simply marvelous here. here's striking a lot of eighth notes
but it's just perfectly right, and in that groove/swing thing,
or supporting it, part of it: the sound.
stu is perfect i think.
bill is def on a big damn roll here.
very strident forthright punctuation lines, rising from the 'heat,
that is to say, the dynamics inherent in the way I feel that they
communicate with one another as muscians, working the way they work,
creating that magic synthesis. I understand criticism due to personal
taste, or comparative analysis with other songs structurally, or sonically;
or a million ways to justify what peeps don't really need to justify;
if a particular song doesn't float their personal boat.
it's just my own feelings and assocations.
i mean i'm listening to Let It Bleed album as I'm typing this,
but just heard 'train' start to finish, and for me, well there's
no sane comparing anything with Let It Bleed album,
but generally we usually marvel at the growth, evolution and a kind
of culmination of sorts, with EOMS.
And it's hard to imagine eoms being different from exactly the way
it was originally released, at least for me; THATS the format that
is my friend. That's how i got to know each and every one of those
moments in every song; running into each other like that;
and stopping when it stopped. the LP itself as Piece...
as neat and spectacular as some of the 'bonus' stuff is;
or the 'extra' stuff we all covet...for better or worse
relative to everything else on GHS LP, Silver Train leaps out for
me everytime. I'm really hearing Bill's performance here is
the very, very, very, uniquely high standared of Impact I've grown
to rely on him for; and actually love him for; such is the connection
and excitement in it. It can never e over-estimated what that rhythm
section did to the entire World; and over and over again.

sorry for the spiel; but that rock and rollin' piano; stu banging it out.
Mick and Keith playing rhythm; that atmospheric holy blowing whistling whining slide and that slide only, is in Mr. Taylor's arsenal here;
i was surprised to find out Mick played guitar on it,
which makes it even more intersting to me.
I mean i just found that out now.

Mick's in 'full character' here but it's the full-steam ahead Mick that is singing, not over-doing it in a different sort of way that sometimes sounds
'put-on' on certain tracks, I mean he's 'in character' and all that for the vid; and i'm sure he blew his best energy into it in the studio; it sounds like it; it's in his nice range an he has great facility there; it's bombastic on purpose; it's a train, it's what johnny was strummin' to the rhythm of when the driver made it; and the drivers are def o board here; and you can hear the whistle blow; hear it for a thousand miles get down taylor, stu, bill, keith and mick on guitar, mick singing great and blowing perfec whining atomosp-heric harmonica that melds with Taylor's slide so gorgeously.
and it's a fine vocal imo.
and also there's the Harmonica. The production and performance of the two
Mick's making that sound with harmonica and slide; that atmospheric thing i call 'holy' some times in admiration of the big vibrations it emits and the
effect it has on sentient beings.
Probably inter-species. Play Fido some Stones and let him out in the yard when Fifi is in heat. write the results to Rockman.
i give him permisson to respond in my name. which now i'll have to change legally I guess.
so taylor, bill and charlie, mick and keith on guitars, in a way Taylor's hottest swan song as a Rolling Stone, one could look at it like that.
if it wasn't for that pesky IORR LP with Dance Little Sister.
Another absolutely TOPPEST MOST TIER OF ALL TIME Rolling Stones song
for me and has been since the first hearing a zillion times ago and a half century ago almost....and many good fans think it's very sub-standard and
many think Silver Train is similarly a Class B or Class C product, tho
for it is a Double or Triple A. right up there with All Down The Line,
and select fat handful from that one, sf, and well.....

....about ten others lol.

Silver Train is a fabulous, joyous affirmation of life.

It's a song that could easily have found its way onto Exile On Main Street, part of a two trains symphony of locomotive exultation with All Down The Line.

In fact thinking about it, ST could form part of a fantastic concept album about trains mentioned in Stones' songs. Love In Vain, No Expectations and Still A Fool (Two Trains) are three others that easily spring to mind.

Silver Train is one of those songs that has that incredible sense of musical momentum - no pun intended - that the Stones are so masterful at creating. The song picks you up and sweeps you along and the next thing you know you're a passenger on board the greatest rock'n'roll express train 'going home on a south bound train with a song in your mouth'.

It may have ended up on Goat's Head Soup - which for me just about hangs on to the coat tails of Exile, at least in sentiment and playing - but the song itself has Sticky Fingers and Exile written all over it.

And Mick Talor just shines and shimmers on this song. For me Silver Train is first class rock'n'roll written and recorded by a band that were still firing on all cyclinders.

Played this yesterday for the first time in years in my car (I was 20 when it came out). Made me think it would be a great live song if played hard, if Mick came out strong, maybe as a 2nd song, etc...

... then I found YouTubes of it in 2014 and later w Mick Taylor. What a disappointing mess.

Still hoping though.
