This is EXACTLY me too.... when Goat's came out, I thought this was the weakest on the record. Still do in many respects, but I do really like this track now.

It stands on its own two feet as a Stones-by-numbers type thing, it feels like something they could knock up in a few takes, but Taylor's slide is just beautiful and lifts it up quite a few notches above merely the norm.

OMG - I don't believe I'm reading some of these other comments.

Silver Train is a fabulous, joyous affirmation of life.

It's a song that could easily have found its way onto Exile On Main Street, part of a two trains symphony of locomotive exultation with All Down The Line.

In fact thinking about it, ST could form part of a fantastic concept album about trains mentioned in Stones' songs. Love In Vain, No Expectations and Still A Fool (Two Trains) are three others that easily spring to mind.

Silver Train is one of those songs that has that incredible sense of musical momentum - no pun intended - that the Stones are so masterful at creating. The song picks you up and sweeps you along and the next thing you know you're a passenger on board the greatest rock'n'roll express train 'going home on a south bound train with a song in your mouth'.

It may have ended up on Goat's Head Soup - which for me just about hangs on to the coat tails of Exile, at least in sentiment and playing - but the song itself has Sticky Fingers and Exile written all over it.

And Mick Talor just shines and shimmers on this song. For me Silver Train is first class rock'n'roll written and recorded by a band that were still firing on all cyclinders.

Another gem off of the Stones gentlest, warmest, most mysterious and delicate album. Silver Train chugs along very nicely, thanks to Mick Taylor’s fluid guitar-work and of course Jagger’s train-whistle harp, but at the same time has a lovely narcotic effect.

Thanks Mike! The whole album really is something very special. I've always loved listening to GHS late at night, at a low volume (unlike almost all other Stones albums, which of course sound better the louder you crank them); it's like taking a sonic bubble bath.

Goat's Head Soup is my go to album for late night/early hours Stones' listening experiences. There are other great late night songs such as Moonlight Mile and Thru & Thru but Coming Down Again and Winter sure are hard to beat.

I like it, but for me it will never be a classic. One of the first by-numbers rockers The Stones ever did. It was also an outtake, even rejected from Exile's songlist of archive material, which says a lot. Again, it rocks nicely and are cool enough.

This track has taken a lot of knocks on this board over the years and has been likened to an unfinished jam. Personally, I've always loved it. A great track and, in my opinion, very close to the Stones' heartbeat.

Methinks this was the first time the Stones brought camp to the party, at least in a promo.

As of now, my fav from GHS.

Particularly like the BU vocals on the "And I did not know her name, and I did not know here name / But I sure loved the way that she laughed" bit

One of the few songs of the band that deserve the label program music. The silvery and howling sound realizes what is the issue of the track ...

It's kind of a misfit. It does sound very Exile era, but not good enough to be on Exile. It doesn't really fit on GHS, but what does? GHS is a real hodge podge album, full of brilliant and mediocre moments. Silver Train is missing something I can't quite put my finger on, like there's some fragile element missing.

The one thing I away wished was more guitar and a little less harp
on Silver Train.
I think that would have made it a even better track..

Back then, having a hit single with lots of radio airplay, and on Top of The Pops U.K. TV, meant great album sales.

Led Zepp were the exception to this and only had one or two singles I think.

I agree. It lacks a distinction between verse and chorus, perhaps?

The bridge is cool the first couple of times, then loses its effect, imo.

just a good song from a good album.
I think MT did other better things during his years with the stones.

Well, "Silver Train" was the b side of "Angie" and LZ had singles released off just about every studio LP in the states anyway...
