I actually can't stand it.

I love this kind of Rolling Stones material. You may call it a filler. For me it's a proof that The Rolling Stones still play their original blues / boogie roots extreemly well, unique like the good old days. This kind of music is the heart of The Rolling Stones. (like Hide Your Love, Casino Boogie, Fancy Man Blues or even Mean Deposition)

The song was going to be called Cut Your Balls Off according to an NME album preview in summer 74.

This is what I'd call 'lads rock', a style the Stones would revisit on Summer Romance and Where The Boys Go on the Emotional Rescue album. It's got that kind of pre-punk laddishness about it but yep, pretty much filler material. love the Mick Taylor bluesy leads though.

I see it was recorded at Island studios which became Sarm Studios in the 80s. I passed the old Island studios on Friday night and they are turning the building where Bob Marley, Free, Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens, Traffic and many other great groups recording historic albums into a luxury block of flats. So Olympic Studios gone and now Island too.

Anybody know any more about the time the Stones spent recording/overdubbing in Basing Street off Portobello Road, Notting Hill? Are there any photos and what else did they record there.

The only Taylor lead is in the very beginning of the song. After that, Keith takes over. But the slide in the beginning (first seconds) is indeed tasty.

Typical Stones track, settled in the middle of Blues and Rock, i.e. Rhythm'n Blues. I like it, subtle guitar work and great vocals.

IORR was arguably the first time the Stones ever recorded “filler”, and this track certainly qualifies. Totally vapid and forgettable. No wonder the Stones buried it towards the end of the album.

I was frankly suprised when I read that Keith plays the lead on this one. The lead has some lazyness I usually associate with Mick Taylor and I cannot think of another lead by Keith sounding like this one...

It is filler and vapid, but not forgettable. The moment I saw the title of the thread I started singing it.

Well, yes there are weak tracks on those albums. But "filler" to me is slightly different. Filler is a track that sounds like it was recorded simply for the purpose of taking up space, because they've completely run out of ideas. On those earlier albums, they certainly included tracks that were not up to their usual standard, but never something that just reeks of artistic desperation like SAC.

I can't hear any filler on Aftermath - perhaps Going Home is about 5 mins too long. Out Of Our Head - nah. Goat's head Soup - what song are you thinking of? Not Hide Your Love, I hope! No2 - I'd find it hard to chuck anything off that.

Agreed that TSMR has that ridiculous Sing This All Together (See What Happens) jam and jam at the end of Gomper.

Hide Your Love is a jam, which makes it stand out, as opposed to "filler", almost by that alone, imo.

Regarding Aftermath, although being one of my top 4 Stones-albums, I'll have to admit that Think and What To Do (lovely as they are) aspire to being filler material

What To Do is probably the first ever country song the Stones wrote. It's got a great singalong melody and for me that means thought was put behind it which stops it falling into 'filler' category. But hey, whatever spins your wheels.

Did they write it before High And Dry?

To me, it sounds more of a pop tune than country, but I have to repeat that I like WTD. It's more how the song is constructed, which other songs on the album it is standing next to and the verses that makes it filler in my book.

Luckily, how we perceive music is subjective

The first 'album' the Stones did, was Aftermath. The albums before, were stray tracks that were gathered together as albums. No wonder they had to fill these albums out with 'filler's.

Not so with regards to their UK debut album, that was their first 'album'.

No.2 and Out Of Our Heads fit your description though, partly Sticky Fingers and definietly Exile as well. Meaning more the stray tracks thing for the last two.

I wonder if the lyrics were a bit more imaginative and not so gratuitous whether we'd like the song a lot more.
