Don't know for sure, but from the sound of it, the studio recording, I would say Open G, Capo at the 5th.
When you play it in standard tuning it does not sound as full.

The studio recording is open-E with a capo at the 7th fret.
Live versions are open-G at with a capo at the 5th fret.

I have a Gibson J-200....when I tune it to open E and put the capo on the 7th fret.......wow!!!!!!!! It truly has the feel of the original recording. I'm not much of a player.....it still sounds great.

Man, what a beautiful piece of work, and, soooooooo simple. It has such a 'choral' quality to it. No wonder they put a choir at the beginning.

Well, when we play it live its' open 'E' with the capo on eighth fret - so the chords are C and F. Surely that's right?

It sounds right on our (nearly world famous) CD!!!!!!

You are correct, Stickyfinger.
What was I smoking when I posted that?
Actually, my open-E tuned guitar that I use
has a capo at 7 'cause I'm working on tune that needs it...
and it is in the key of B. I think that's where it came from.
Shame on me.

Open-E on the record, but live it's played in open-G with the capo at the 5th. That will still give the C and F chords.
