Bill was great in Fingerprint File, wait that was Keith Taylor.

Loved Bill on Sympathy, oh wait that was Keith.

Loved the groove in Tumblin Dice. Ummm that was Taylor.

OK I'll give him Satisfaction. Great counterline to the main lick.

Bill's playing was understated, but always in the pocket - which is the most important part of being a bass player in a band. I love listening to his isolated track on Gimme Shelter - it holds the song together in my opinion ...

What I like about Bill was his tone. That nice deep sound. Not impressed by his playing at all.

Little By Little = wobble, wobble in the best way. I've loved Bill's playing and missed him when Richards, Taylor, Wood took the duties for whatever reasons. D.J. is a obviously a great, great musician but I miss Bill a whole bunch all the same.

There's a lot for me....Love In Vain from Ya Ya's. And his walking up and down the neck of his bass on Twenty Flight Rock from still life, especially during the guitar solo.

Bill's bass for Live With Me on Ya Yas knocks the door down.

It's All Over Now. The bass parts come through loud and clear on the Blu-ray audio version of GRRR!

I love that Bill didn't do the usual rock thing and play a Fender P-Bass. He used his home made bass on most of the records, and short scale basses like the Mustang live. Sometimes Keith didn't know what he was talking about. Just because P basses were great for some things doesn't mean the Stones should have used them.

Bill has said Darryl is too busy, and that's glaringly obvious about halfway through the NO SECURITY You Go Me Rocking, when Darryl does an out-of-place jazzy bit. I really miss Bill there.

He played great walking bass through 1964-1965 sadly often almost tuned down completly on the records...

His modified Dallas Tuxedo bass seems to have taken a back seat for most of 1965 - 1967.

The Framus basses (65/66), Vox Wyman basses (66/67) seem to have been used most during those times. He is shown using a Fender Precision bass (I assume it's Keiths) at a circa September/October 1968 rehearsal. Sounds as if he may have used one for Jigsaw Puzzle.

I reckon he used his modified bass for Gomper though. grinning smiley

Maybe the biggest difference between Bill & Darryl is that Bill propelled the music and Darryl doesn't seem engaged. Bill was much more emotional in his playing. I would say the bass with Bill in the Stones was a much more important, prominent instrument. More memorable, more compelling. Maybe Mick & Keith resented that.

Well they say there's no more sincere flattery than imitation so maybe Keith thought more of Bill and his playing than he'd like to let on?

I say that because they seemed to have picked, and stuck with, a bass player who is the antithesis of Bill. Maybe they stopped caring about the bass sound in their music. It's a necessary component, and so they have a bass player, period. Hell, on their last album it seemed that whomever could pick up a bass got to play it on the record.

Isn't it 19th Nervous Breakdown? Isn't that the zenith?
