The Lantern and Gomper are both cool. What's not to like about The Lantern? A lovely blue, psychedelic piece.

I get that Gomper needs a few spins before it hits home, though. It did for me, but I love it now smiling smiley

Thank you.smileys with beer

This is a legitimately great song. It is still growing on me. If they did a 10-song "best of the Stones 1980-2015" i would put this song on it.

The lyrics/singing and guitars weave together perfectly, the guitar effects are perfect for the song, and the song is "finished" with the care you expect from the Stones rather than tossed off. One of Mick's better vocals in the 1980s IMO.

'There goes the telephone
Suddenly you feel alone &
there's a sweet voice
on the line'

This extra verse is in the video, but edited out elsewhere.

Anyone have any info why it's cut off the album?

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

Totally agree. Feel that Mick's vocals, esp in the final verse, approach his finest work.

If the 80s would have been guitar-friendlier and less keyboard-polluted, She Was Hot should have been a chart-topping single, it is a s good as a Stones-single could ever be. It has everything you could wish for, but in the 80s other music was in demand.

Listening to the studio track a few times,
How many voices of Mick do you hear?
His main vocal, and he is singing back-up.
Pretty good. Pretty, pretty good.

The lyrics? He starts out lonely, cold sheets, bored looking forward to Monday morning
Gets a call, she is hot and coming by in a cab with champagne?
Nice life.

Yes it’s a very good song.

The send off is superb.

“She was lost, and she took a chance
At just a brief romance
Down the avenue into the lost bayou
Into the tall bamboo, back to the human zoo
I wish you all the best, I hope we meet again
In a cold Chicago night”

Probably the most I’ve spent with the song, thanks IORR.

Tiny latter day gem for sure but kinda forgettable and on the cheap side (and She’s So Cold is hotter). There’s no reason to praise this song any more than Star Star (both are pretty much Stones-by-numbers teetering on self-parody) but I guess we have more affection for ‘She Was Hot’ simply because – just speculating here – most members of this forum remember when it was released and at the time fervently believed that better was to come. But alas…

My favorite from Undercover. This is an endearing tune. Love Stu's playing on it.

I stand by these words.

Decent tune and Mick sings great, but it tends to kind of ramble on...

Bought this cool vinyl single back in the day b/w Think I'm Going Mad:

Ehhhh. I can't speak for older people but when I heard UOTN with its horns, I figured it was on the same album as Heartbreaker with its horns and doo-doo-doos. All I knew at that point was LET IT BLEED, GYYYO!, HOT ROCKS and TATTOO YOU.

So I got GOATS HEAD SOUP because of Undercover Of The Night. I love both of them, regardless of their status. I know neither one are a top grade album ala BB, LIB, SF, EOMS, SG or TY but GHS and U sound great and, with exception to 1986 (and the tiny sound of SG, which has nothing to do with where it was recorded), the Marconi years were fantastic.

The guitar work on U is top notch, possibly the best overall guitar album by the Stones, and Mick's vocal work is his best ever.

Come again? His vocals on She Was Hot and the title track are good. Are you saying those two songs constitute his best vocal work ever? Cuz his vocals on many of the other songs are limp. For example...

It Must Be hell – sounds like Mick had some hellish nasal congestion.
All The Way Down – sounds like Mick didn’t need any anti-perspirant for this ‘vocal work’.
Pretty Beat Up – sounds like Mick is singing with a mouthful of blood.
Too Much Blood – sounds like Mick forgot this wasn’t a solo record.
Too Tough – sounds like Mick was wearing a space suit or singing into a pillow for some reason.

Has anybody here ever nailed perfectly Keith's single note guitar line of the studio version? Meaning effects and right hand technique?

Same for Bill's outro bass line? Is that the fretless he was using, right?

Have been playing this song for years, and the more I play it, the more I understand I am playing it wrong!

One of the best tracks in the late years.

Really? It's closer to the beginning than it is the end! It's almost 35 years old.

I love this song, it was my intro to the Stones as a teenager at the time. Got to see it live in Paris on my birthday in 2007

It puzzles me that Stu would dismiss the entire magical TSMR album, but play on utter shit like this song.

I take this back.

Despite some iffy production and a too common presence of self parody there is just something so endearing about their 80's releases. Something in the melody or and little lick here and there that just gets you.
