I have seen The Band listed, and Buffalo Springfield, but I think you have to give Canada credit for both of those bands...most of the Band, and certainly Neil Young of BS hail from Ontario I believe.

I left Nirvana off my post and they should be on.

The Band were Canadian (outside Levon).

Canadians are Americans too, Canada being part of the Americas.

As a Canadian I take exception to this statement. Call us North Americans if you must but we are definitely not Americans.

I was really looking forward to a pulsating rhythm guitar from Tom, but he was so low in the mix, it made the whole band sound flat. That and their typical 35 to 40 minute show seemed like a rip-off.

Re: OT: Top 5 American Bands

Nobody likes the White Stripes? Or do they not count as a band?

No, we can't agree on what a band is. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are excluded by an accident of naming, and some great studio bands because they didn't tour or record as a separate unit. Does a band have to play guitars? Or indeed, any instrument at all? (in which case we need a new thread for the many great American vocal groups).

Given the demographic of this board, it's not surprising that most of the choices are white blues/rock bands of the late 60s and 70s. Nobody is going to put a band in their top 5 if they are not familiar with their work or don't like it, and that's what most people here know best. No jazz, no country or bluegrass or cajun/zydeco or folk or (insert genre here.....) And if Canadians count as part of "the Americas" then what about South American or Caribbean music?

I'm not nominating a top 5 because I don't know enough about some of the leading candidates - I'd certainly have the Beach Boys on my personal shortlist, and the White Stripes, and anything involving Mark Lanegan, and the Heartbreakers if they're allowed, and the Neville Brothers. But white US blues/rock of the 70s is not my specialist subject and there are obviously some top contenders there.
