OT: Little Richard

Embarrassingly, I've only recently discovered the music of Little Richard. (I blame classic rock radio, which never plays his music!) And honestly, I am absolutely blown away by the energy and personality that leaps out of my speakers on tracks like the one below. What an incredible talent!!

I was wondering if any of my fellow Stones lovers appreciate this wonderful artist as well?

Little Richard was the Queen of Rock & Roll years before Mick Jagger became one in 1968.

Good musician and singer but I can do without the personality. Too loud for my books.

I worked with him once. Outside, rolling up in the limousine he was all flash and Whoo Whoo. Once you get him inside he's actually a quiet, thoughtful person. And a hell of a piano player.

My very first experience with Rock&Roll were the Great: Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis.

I Don't Know What You've Got But It's Got Me is great; it's a soul number, written by Don Covay, and after his Specialty golden period, but it's great. It's on Veejay, I believe.

Man, I love Little Richard.... the power of his voice blows me away everytime I hear him sing.

Here is another one with young Jimi Hendrix on guitar:

To me this is pure magic!

When I bought my first Little Richard compilation, I remember hearing this one and I didn't liked at that time, but now it's one of my favorites.

Nuki Suki from 1972's Second Coming is also a great funky track, beating Sly and James Brown at their own game.

Search "Little Richard Paris" at YouTube for several clips from a rocking 1966 show. Absolutely spellbinding. Six parts, I think.

This might be the whole thing!

Completely honestly, I thought the Stones should have opened their show with Good Golly Miss Molly... The piano opening to be replaced by Keith/Ronnie weaving/dueling!

Man that would smoke on the bstage!!

ON topic... I agree. Under-appreciated by many.

Little Richard is Awesome!

He has inspired the Beatles, Stones, CCR, Mitch Ryder, and appeared as himself on Sesame Street, the real measure of accomplishment!!

IMHO, Little Richard is in the same class as Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Bo Diddley, in terms of influence on the sound and attitude of Rock & Roll.

Exile's "Rip This Joint" is clearly inspired by LR's "Rip It Up".

In my opinion if you are stuck on a desert island with only one CD, it should be Little Richard Greatest Hits. He covers so much ground, but mostly keeps you pumped up!!!!!, Which is what you need to get thru life.

One of my heroes, and so glad I saw him (a good few years ago now) once in London. Will definitely seek out that 6CD set, a MUST have. Love his energy, voice, overall sound & his mean mean mean piano playing. A true gem !

Little Richard is one of the irresistibles - just ask my rock & roll students, if you have any doubt,
but why would anyone have any doubt or ever have to ask??

Plus which: Stanley Booth's account of his chat with him at the soundcheck for the Stones' 1969 Sullivan appearance
includes one of my all-time favourite Keith Observations: "That Keith Richards sure is a funky-lookin cat!"
Yes he sure is :E

Little Richard – one of the true originals!

Unfortunately most of Little Richard's recordings are now only available on cheap compilations that present the songs out of context and ignore Little Richard's original tracklists and artistic intentions. It's therefore important to find the original albums as authorized by Richard. No matter what the critics say, the guy never released a bad album and the Specialty recordings are only the tip of the iceberg.

Here's a quick rundown of his original albums:

The jump blues recordings for RCA/Peacock:
• eight singles for RCA (1951/1952)
• two singles for Peacock (1953)
• first release on CD + bonus tracks: The Formative Years (1989)

The Rock 'n' Roll recordings for Specialty I:
• Here's Little Richard (1957)
• Little Richard (1958)
• The Fabulous Little Richard (1959)

The Gospel recordings I:
• Pray Along with Little Richard (1960)
• Pray Along with Little Richard Vol. 2 (1960)
[Pray Along includes old school gospel recordings – Richard on vocals + backing singers + organ/piano – one of Richard's best albums, re-released under many different titles]
• King of the Gospel Singers (1962) [a more "commercial" version of Gospel music, lavishly arranged by Quincy Jones]

The Rock 'n' Roll recordings for Specialty II:
• two singles (1964, released on Well Alright! + bonus tracks, 1970)

The Vee-Jay recordings – new material and re-recordings of previous hits, displaying a strong soul influence:
• Little Richard Is Back (And There's a Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On!) (1964)
• Little Richard's Greatest Hits (1964)

The Modern recordings – new material and re-recordings of previous hits, displaying a beginning funk influence:
• The Incredible Little Richard Sings His Greatest Hits - Live! (1966)
• The Wild and Frantic Little Richard (1966)

The Okeh recordings – new material and re-recordings of previous hits with a strong soul/funk influence:
• The Explosive Little Richard (1967)
• Little Richard's Greatest Hits: Recorded Live! (1967)

The Reprise funk rock recordings and the 1970s:
• The Rill Thing (Reprise, 1970)
• The King of Rock and Roll (Reprise, 1971)
• The Second Coming (Reprise, 1972)
• Southern Child (Little Richard's country album, Reprise, recorded in 1972, released in 2005)
• Right Now! (United, 1973)
• Little Richard Live (despite the title these are studio re-recordings of 20 greatest hits, K-Tel, 1976)

The Gospel recordings II:
• God's Beautiful City (World, 1979)
• Lifetime Friend (Warner Brothers, 1986)

The 1990s:
• Shake It All About (Disney, 1992)
• Meets Masayoshi Takanaka (re-recordings of greatest hits, released in Japan only, Toshiba, 1992)

Lemmy sings the praises of Little Richard as a golden god. In the Lemmy biopic, he refers to Mr. Penniman as the greatest rock 'n' roll singer ever, no one else even close.
