Hi Gregor,

Spot on! Re JB and his take on the 'My Generation' solo part...probably the worst that I've ever heard, hah-hah! I take zero pleasure in writing that, and he is in an impossible position for that.

In the event it did not matter one iota, as the thrill comes from the segue into 'Cry If You Want' which is one of the few occasions that anything approaching spontaneity occurs...PT can lose himself and let go which still can amaze you!

Cheers,

Simon.

Simon,

Agreed - I don't think anyone will ever match that incredible bass solo by JE on My Generation. Thank goodness it's preserved forever on the original recording for us and future generations to enjoy, to say nothing of Keith's drumming.

Pete seems to have lost none of his playing ability at all - he says he finds it easy. Those stage slides really are not a good idea for a 72 year old man though! He can be a moody old so and so but in recent times he seems much happier on stage and engages in much more banter with the crowd and even Roger, who he's not always had the best relationship with.

Provided their health remains good, I think they still have gas in the tank yet. Last September in Bologna, I had a couple of beers with their Support Hand's roadie and he commented on how down to Earth and approachable Pete and Rog both were, that they were loving gigging and wanted to carry on for longer - as we have seen with their forthcoming Summer Tour.

Well, actually, Pete may not. At the Birmingham show he said that he did not think what he did was particularly good, nor was it fulfilling. He said that the part he liked was knowing the crowd really liked it, that was good for his soul, and he pounded his chest. It wasn't good to hear, but there you go.

Just giving you what Pete said at Birmingham... He said that Entwistle didn't like playing My Generation because it was mostly repeating the same few notes over and over.

But yet no-one could play said notes quite like him. He was so good st it he got bored of it. Another song Entwistle hated playing live was 'Magic Bus'.Apparently He wrote and sang old live favourite 'Boris the Spider' himself after a drunken night out with none other than our own Bill Wyman on a Bass Players' night out.
The Who were all complex, difficult characters with the possible exception of Roger, who seems to have been snd continues to be the most grounded of the lot.

While Roger still sings fine, and Pete is questionable in his continued love of The Who (ask him on an off day and he'll just say he's doing it for money), you can't deny that his heart is still there when he's really into it and he still plays a mean guitar. Very much like a Neil Young, where you can tell this isn't an act and they aren't faking it. Either they are into it or not, and they don't just do it to be "professional". Very small list there. I didn't know till a few years ago how good Pete still really is and it kinda completely changed my view of touring as the Who. He still does it so well, including jumps and slides, that I saw it as completely legitimate.

Not sure why you would post a secondary market/resale/scalper site when you can still get official face value tickets via ticketmaster - including front sections.

The Who - Lake Tahoe

Anyhow, hope they schedule a show Southern California show!

Yeah I still can't believe thats a thing. I guess its cool but so many questions. Why does The Who have to do that? They must sell fine on their own, or they just don't have to tour. Why does reunited GNR have to do it? Same points. Why that double bill? They don't really have any history and they're two decades apart. Just seems like a weird mix all around, but hey I guess if it sells it sells. GNR fans are already sick of them covering The Seeker and the running joke amongst them is now it'll played twice in one night.

Gone 15 years next month; the most powerful bass player who ever walked the earth; here he warms up with zac, being 100% John Alec Entwhiswtle. casually brilliant; awesome; I've seen The Who more than any other single rock band ever...they weren't the biggest of the biggest, there were a lot of chances to see them where it wasn't a big fuss, theaters and so on...parks even...and yes some big shows...they ramped up their commercial viability slowly unlike The Stones and very few others who were major acts...no gigantic enormo things other than Woodstock which was a one-off...on to them early...always w just the four of them...a fan big fan before "Sell Out," never mind Tommy or Who's Next when it peaked....how i loved this band; how i miss this guy. How cool it is to see him just working a soundcheck and moving so much air. MASSIVE. the interview and such not so very interesting. just a few minutes of the sound check is what I wanted to share...He's about a year and a half away from the big sleep here. kinda sad. well very sad to me. but kinda triumphant to see a true King do his thing.
rip.

Well deserved! smileys with beer

The Ox Gets Himself a Blue Plaque!
June 14, 2017

[twitter.com]

On Thursday the 15th June 2017, BBC Radio Gloucestershire will be unveiling a Blue Plaque to celebrate the iconic bass player John Entwistle.

John moved to Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire in 1976, and occupied a house there until his death in 2002. In May 2000 he famously stood in for the bass player of local band The Stowaways at a charity concert held at the Royal British Legion club in Stow. BBC Radio Gloucestershire thought it would be fitting to place the Blue Plaque on the Royal British Legion club building where this historic gig took place, and the club have kindly agreed.

BBC Radio Gloucestershire will be broadcasting live from the plaque unveiling between 11am-12pm on Thursday 15th June. During this hour we will be hearing from a number of people from the local community who knew and loved John, tributes from fellow musicians and, of course, some classic Who tracks!

BBC Radio Gloucestershire invites you to tune in to this special broadcast, or if you are local to the area, why not come along? The unveiling will take place at the Royal British Legion Building, Well Lane, Stow-on-the-Wold GL54 1DB between 11am-12pm.

That is cool and well deserved/ I love those plaques and seeing them all around - you learn alot about people you might not have ever heard of otherwise.

But is it just me , or is "Founder member" a little awkward? Should it not be "Founding member"?.
Could be a quirky English language thing...

I saw them at the casino near DC the other night. Two hours of non-stop hits, what's not to love? Pete's still aces, even if his vertical leap isn't quite what it was. Roger's voice is better than it has been in a while. The rest of the cast (especially young Starkey) is solid. New bassist is in an impossible position.

Maybe punctuation would help:

When I saw them last year in Italy with Pino on bass, they were rocking with Roger's voice sounding much better, probably due to the long instrumental (the Rock) plus Pete doing vocals Keith-style mid set. Wild Italian audience added to the occasion. Pino made a very commendable attempt at John's signature bass line in 'My Generation'. Pino is touring with John Mayer this year after 14 years with the Who. I hope his departure is not permanent. Young Starkey (a 51 yo grandfather btw!) does an excellent job. He's been with the Who for 20 years, longer than Keith ever was!

I saw The Who this past Tuesday. Despite Daltrey feeling ill (show staff tried to get him a doctor) he soldiered on and gave the best performance I've seen him do in the last twenty years. It was like he'd sold his soul to devil to get his voice back. Strong, accurate and powerful. Nothing off key or cracking. I'm guessing I'll never see them again and if so this was definitely the show I want to remember them by. WOW!

That was really embarrassing. Is Zak even with them anymore? They've turned into one of those 'Three Backup Singers and a Boatload of Musicians' on stage bands, and nothing sounds authentic. It's too bad that none of these groups has managed to transition into getting positive, stirring music out of this stage of their life, and not trying to chase a 50 years ago ghost of themselves.

I gotta say though Roger sounds pretty remarkable...yeah, he's got a fleet of Bernard Fowlers to cover the high notes, but his voice on its own sounds strong.

Lol I'm a big fan of current Who (not big fan but I have no problems with them continuing) but its become a big laughable people praising Daltrey's voice. Its become like the Stones when they release an album. "Its the best in 20 years!" People have been saying that about Daltrey every tour for the last 10 years. And then before then when I don't remember people talking about it, he still sounded pretty damn good on their last tour with the Ox (he does on Royal Albert Hall 2002 or whatever CD that is).

So I have nothing against them. I still think they kill it a bit more than other bands, even if they are the same as the Stones where its basically a revue show at this point. But Pete still crushes it, I always feel like more than you'd expect. Pete is singlehandedly the reason they should continue IMO cause he still has all his moves, still cursing up a storm, and when he's passionate he's still aces. I think I like that he's still unpredictable. When I saw them they messed up Won't Get Fooled Again and it was awesome. You wouldn't see that with the Stones and McCartney and I think that aspect that they are still even a tad dangerous or without a net.

Maybe Daltrey really does sound better this tour but people said he sounded great on the 50th tour and I swear people were saying he sounded better than ever when I saw them on the Quad tour. So I now don't take it that seriously, but I do hope he still sounds good. Band has always been good. Zak is always reliable and they always have a pretty good bass player and Simon does a good job on second guitar. Honestly, its essentially been the same band the last 20 years. You know if you like the current Who or not. My father refused to go with me cause he saw them during the Tommy tour twice and had no interest, which is fair. I'm happy I went when I did in 2011 or 12 on the Quad tour. No real reason to go back though.
