It all makes sense now.

Yet.

The Who have drank the wrong tea to fire Zak.

They're a solid load of old tossers. They're not worth bothering with. Why anyone would pay to go see "The Who" is a tosser.

The Fake Who.

I know its been said a ton of times but while I'm not happy with what the Who has done in the last recent bit, they are no faker than the current Stones are. I don't know how anyone could argue that.

I will argue that:

Wrong.

The Rolling Stones have made no bones about their changes.

The Rolling Stones don't lie to their fans.

There's zero fake about The Rolling Stones.

The Who should refund anyone dumb enough to buy tickets and retire/go away.

Agreed.. at this point it's really all nostalgia for both bands.. but its the music we grew up on and love.... I'm looking forward to Vancouver Sept 23... don't really care who's (pardon the pun) on the Drums or Bass... I'm there to see Pete's windmills and Rogers Mic twirls smiling bouncing smiley

There were mic twirls in 2024 but none at the two shows I saw this year. And none at the Roger solo show I recently saw either.

But there were at least still a few windmills!

From Zak Starkey, May 28:

This is fukin total bollox .
I was fired …
Roger’s new word for it is ‘retired’ to complete my other musical projects .
I called Roger last week and told him in person I had spent nearly 2 months at my studio in Jamaica completing my studio projects. That I had a mantra of the cosmos single out next week and then I was completely available for the foreseeable future… he was a little surprised but understood. It’s true - I have no plan’s whatsoever for the fall as I thought I was touring with The Who and my mantra band mates are v busy in oasis and happy Mondays until the new year . So this is simply a load of bollox … Am I fired , retired, deffo not tired as I’m 20 years younger than these guys as they keep saying .
Dropping two beats on our second show is not a firing offence - I’ve watched the show on tv I can’t see where I dropped them - I looked everywhere- it’s the who ffs if it was perfect it would be so f*cking boring …

Insane. Absolutely insane. If its the Kool Aid you want to drink, that's fine, but all bands and people lie. It just happens. Keith himself literally said there is no Stones without Charlie Watts and we still have the Stones (cue the "Charlie hand picked Steve so that the show could go on without him").

Its not good to be too obsessed with anything cause its one step away from fervent cult support.

Although i agree Roger sacking Zak to replace him with his solo drummer, and then make it look like Zak retired or was too busy was creepy.

to be fair i think charlie said use steve to finish the dates they had scheduled while he recovered not meaning replace me with him if i die

that's where the stretching the truth part comes in (though who knows i wasn't there)

another one that comes to mind is keith being asked if taylor would join them on the zip code tour and him saying no that he thinks he's sick or something and in the next sentence they fact check him by reaching out to taylor's people who say he's not sick

but that's not to take away from how pathetically manipulative and shameful rodgers been towards zak

just that the stones aren't angels either

As it seems The Who is headed into the twilight I can look back and make a few observations:
Ive been a fan of the band for 30 years; My first was concert was in 2000 at 17 in Tinley Park, IL. It turned out to be John's last tour with the band and they rocked. I saw them three times after that (the last being in 2007).
I love The Who and will always love the musi. Their output from 1965-1978 (and even into 1982) is great if unfortunately and unfairly overshadowed by their peers.
But since 1982 the failure of the band to produce more than two albums seems a sad state. Theyve coasted on the hits for 40 years and still will. But I feel that they are quickly becoming forgotten by people, critics and everyone else. This latest fracas with Zak only seems to undermine a latter day shaky legacy.
Its possible that while the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin and Floyd will live on, The Who will be forgotten within a generation, if not sooner, and their massive contributions to popular music will go unnoticed.

As long as there's a new CSI series introduced to the public, the Who will live on.

When they get to one with Squeezebox as the theme it’s probably time to call it, though.

Regarding the post-Mooney Who — back in the day, I wondered if the then semi-retired Mitch Michell might be available and suitable for the job.

Thoughts?

Cherry picker. Pathetic cherry picker.

It was clear what decision was made.

"Literally".

Yes, Keith "literally" said that. You know what else he "literally" said.

Anything else or is that all you have to hang your Kool Aid hat on?

Factually, it wasn't Kool Aid.

Since you're sticking to old statements perhaps you should look up the Kool Aid reference so you aren't so Steve Jordaned about Keith's comments.

Lies?

Then every single thing Keith and whoever said about DIRTY WORK is a lie.

Ridiculous.

Your flag is really waving.

Sad?

Really?

The singer throws a tantrum based in fake news and Starkey gets fired twice based on someone so out of line with reality it's beyond Pink Floyd stupidity.

Roger is crying like a bitch because Pete said what he said?

They should cancel their pathetic selling tour and retire. They've absurdly destroyed their torch. The world won't notice if they go away.

Why are you still in this thread if you don't like the current version of the Who and you know that's what's gonna be talked about? We can call you up when classic Who talk comes around but it just feels like a waste of time for you and us. But I'm assuming you must (and I'm guessing that comment right there is gonna be what keeps you here) and we all just have to accept that. It is the internet after all.

Zak Starkey On Leaving The Who, Oasis Reunion, And Mantra Of The Cosmos

A rollercoaster interview with the well-connected drummer...

Robin Murray
12·06·2025

Mantra Of The Cosomos

“I was speaking to Pete Townshend the other night about the conception of an idea, the writing of an idea, the producing of an idea, and the playing of it… and the commitment to takes to mix it. And it’s daunting. It’s f*cking daunting.”

Ah, says, Clash – so you’re still in touch with The Who?

“Oh I text Pete, and I speak to Roger every week”.

Hang on…

“So, I got fired twice in two weeks, right. And Roger was on the phone two days ago, and said: look, don’t put your drums in to storage just yet, in case we need you. And I said, you what?! Let me know before I start playing drums with Noddy Holder or summin!”

So, we actually saw one of those fateful Royal Albert Hall shows – your ‘final’ nights with The Who…

“And I was terrible, wasn’t I…?”

To be honest, Pete’s knee replacement surgery was throwing him off…

“Roger never misses a note. The power and the glory and BANG on the note every time. Doesn’t always happen to be in the right place,” he laughs. “If he looked at me, I’d save him every f*cking time.”

“Oh I don’t know,” he says, suddenly sombre, almost maudlin. It’s evident that playing with The Who – who he has essentially known since childhood – means an enormous amount to him. “I don’t know why I got fired yet. I dropped two beats. I don’t remember that, and I can’t find them. But is that really a sackable offense?”

Zak Starkey knows The Who inside-out – he was close friends with John Entwistle, the band’s stalwart bass player. He has a drum lesson from Keith Moon, and remains a dear friend to Kenney Jones, Small Faces’ drummer and Moon’s replacement in The Who.

“I’m seeing Kenney this weekend, actually,” he notes. “Lovely, lovely man. Kenney taught me drums. Keith gave me one lesson. But Kenney, he actually taught me. I’m seeing him this weekend for a roast.”

Trying to push the conversation to more optimistic plains, Clash asks after his summer plans.

“Well, I might be back in the Who! I don’t know, the way Roger’s talking. It was left ambiguous. Honestly, I think public opinion had something to do with it. And I didn’t enjoy that a lot. Roger’s been my mate for 30 years and beyond. We’re tight. We are tight.”

“The thing about The Who is, they’ve got an addiction to friction. And without that, they wouldn’t be The Who. Without it, you wouldn’t get The Kinks, you wouldn’t get Oasis…”
