WhatsApp at least is useful, I don't think the majority of people would disagree with that. But all these other various social media platforms, the worst of which in my personal opinion is Facebook, just forget it. As Big Al rightly said, social media is a cancer !

Social Media is terrible, though I honestly believe the users are more to blame than the apps themselves. Sure, they make these apps to addict you, but have some self control and willpower. I never understood using twitter or uploading pictures of your food, etc, but I can still have the apps to just be reasonably clued in. People like to blame the apps, they like to blame the high cost of ticket prices on the artists, they like to blame a lot of things on stuff that no one is holding a gun to your head to be a participant in. A lot of times the people are just as much, if not moreso, the problem in these situations becoming the norm, IMO.

Yes, I do have WhatsApp, admittedly. Fort me, it's a text-messaging service, with the option to send and receive photos. I don't make use of the more social media-like aspects, such as 'group chats; statuses, etc. It's primarily texting. I do watch YouTube, daily: GB News and TalkTV! I know it is a 'social media' platform, but I only view it; I don't comment or upload anything.

Could we get this thread back on topic please? I came for some Who-talk, not a discussion of people's social media use.

@BV? Many thanks

Cheers, Big Al - let's get back to chatting about The Who!

smileys with beer

Have you seen them live?

I saw them in 1989 (not a great time for the band, but an amazing time for a 14-yaer-old me)

Then in 2022 or 2023 - in the RAH - an amazing folkie vibe, with accordion etc

And last month, again in the RAH - fine, but not amazing.

Yes! I caught them in 2004 at the London Forum, Kentish Town.

Of course, the venue used to be called 'The Town and Country Club', where Keith performed a couple of shows in 1992

How about a full Quadrophenia show from 73? We all know there are good recordings from this tour, as we have heard snippets from the fan club release, Backstage Pass, and other nuggets released. We know the "history" of Keith having problems playing to the backing tapes, but I would guess he still was phenomenal, and the shows were great. It would be great to have an entire show released in good quality. Come on, boys...show us the real me!

I saw them at Desert Trip in, I think, 2017. Three day show with Paul McCartney, Stones, Bob Dylan, Roger Watters and Neil Young. I felt they certainly held their own with that awesome group.

Several years back after the fan club release the full Concerts from Philadelphia and Landover were bootlegged. The Philly show was partially available on the great "Tales from the Who" bootleg that had been around since the 70s, but the entire concert had never been available.
The shows are incredible and show that The Who's poor view of the Quad tour in 73 is unwarrented.
My Favorite version of Drowned is from the Philly show and its amazing:

Thanks for posting. I hadn’t heard this. It’s a great performance —- and a great reminder of the power of the original band live.

Hello,

I saw Roger Daltrey at The Bridgewater Hall on Sunday 4th May, 2025. Here's my usual old blah of a mini-review, hah-hah!

At bang-on 8.30pm the band walk on stage…hang on where’s wee Rog then? A full minute later and he joins us, explaining that "he’d gone to shake hands with the Vicar”. Cue much guffawing and that set the tone for the evening: here to have fun. The setlist below shows that they played a mix of Who stuff and covers that RD obviously likes. He was fulsome in his praise for Paul Simon, both in terms of his supreme talents as a songwriter- singling out he line "Staccato signals of constant information, A loose affiliation of millionaires and billionaires…”. “How did he know that that was how things were gonna go? Amazing…”- that was one of two references to the internet/mobile phone/social media age that RD is not overly fond of. There was a lotta love for John Fogerty too, remembering how he dug what The Who were doing and how supportive he was. Well you can’t be right all the time, hah-hah!

Let My Love Open the Door
Freedom Ride
Who Are You
Waiting for a Friend
Another Tricky Day
After the Fire
Days of Light
Giving It All Away
The Kids Are Alright
The Boy in the Bubble
Substitute
Squeeze Box
Won't Get Fooled Again
Going Mobile
I Keep It to Myself
Have You Ever Seen the Rain?
Without Your Love
Baba O'Riley

Encore:
Days
Tribute to Hank Williams

Rog’s band were as terrific as you’d expect and yet again it was Simon Townshend who was perhaps the MVP: he was a constant source of energy for the two hours and was stellar on ‘Going Mobile’ in particular. Scott Devours was on drums but not every number needed him, so he helped out longtime Who-associate Jody Linscott on percussion. Also present and very welcome too was Steve Weston who played with Rog on the album that he did with Wilko: they played ‘I Keep It To Myself’ in tribute to the great man…again more love and fond memories from RD.

Of course there were some stalwarts in the setlist: ‘Who Are You’, ’TKAA’, ’Substitute' and especially ‘Baba O’’ are guaranteed to get punters who are even older than me up and shouting! The latter features Katie Jacoby on violin and my word does she go for it…outstanding! As per the RAH shows at the end of March, it was fairly astonishing how strong Rog’s voice still is. He now acknowledges that he doesn’t know how much longer he can do this for: it seems the stopper is going to be his deteriorating hearing. He mentioned that he had no idea if The Who would do anything again, at which point Si Townshend made a nose-tapping gesture and smiled…so we’ll see.

A very brief part of the show is RD answering questions that have been submitted by the audience. So he’s got a handful of A4 sheets which he proceeds to read, half out-loud and probably discards 75% of them, hah-hah! Most of them were banal and obvious, so far dos…however one of them asked what kind of music he listened to at home: not rock he said as he’d had a lifetime of it…probably JS Bach as Baroque was his favourite style! At a must maybe some early Chuck Berry too. It was an eye-opener hearing him talk freely without having to compete with PT who finds stage banter much easier.

Could this have been much better? No, not really and the cherry was Northern Trains not cancelling the last rattler outta Deansgate- a minor miracle and a major result!

And if you've stuck with me this far, you deserve a bonus ball...here's one of me and Paulywaul in The Gore Hotel, just around the corner from the Royal Albert Hall and a good place for a banquet...

We had only met once before and that was at a Who show at the Indigo2 back in December 2008: I walked in to the hotel bar and we both pointed at each other!

We were both there to see The Who play just around the corner- nice to see you, to see you...nice!

Cheers,

Simon.

This is exciting! Between this and getting the full SF 71 a couple of years ago, they’ve come up with most of my vault requests. The two I’d still really like are
one of the Edmonton ‘73 shows, and a full 1976 show.

I was at that Oval Show. The Who were great. The Faces (support) were dire. Was Ronnie still with them at that point?

I totally changed my opinion of Ronnie when I watched him (basically) keep the support band together during the EC Rainbow Concert about 18 months later. He did a fantastic job then.
