Thursday was the better night - not least because tonight they were beset by sound problems of some kind. A couple of times it happened that they'd get half way into a song and have to restart because Roger either couldn't hear the drums or anything but a mish-mash that he said he couldn't sing to. And a couple of times, even after restarting, he would just eventually give up and understandably looked to be going mad with frustration and then relieved when he got through a song without any hitches. I felt for him and think he ended up exhausted by it all but who can blame him. Pete took over the singing on a couple of those occasions and also asked a few times for adjustments to be made, like turning up the drums and whatever else.

Unfortunately, the problems also happened on the last song - The Song Is Over, which I hope is not a hint of some kind. I could see Roger felt disappointed and it did admittedly make for a bit of an anticlimax.

But all that said, they still put on a great performance, despite the technical glitches, and are still my second favourites after the Rolling Stones. Long live Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey!

Don’t know about thursday, but this was very much a RAH Who show. Roger wanting to restart some songs happens all the time. I don’t mind. You just get more The Who, and also it makes it all a bit more human. Fantastic show last night- even got some blood spatter at the guitar. And Pete’s sly remarks are always a ten out of ten.

How many performances have the Who given at the RAH, now? They must be rivalling Eric Clapton! grinning smiley

Yesterday was the first time I say The Who live. I can't belive I missed such a legendary band all these years. I loved every minute of it. At the place I was sitting the sound was fantastic. Great to see that, as the Stones, they can also mess up a song or two.

I was there last night and they were great with the reduced band and no orchestra. Roger's voice was excellent and particularly good on Love Reign O'er Me as was said earlier. Love Ain't For Keeping and The Song Is Over were the stand outs for me as I had not seen these performed live before.

I went on the Thursday night, and Roger seemed to be having sound issues too. I was sat up in the balcony behind the stage, and he kept stalking over to another mic on a stand near Zak and talking into that - I assume this is some kind of method for communication with the mixing team etc.

He didn't look very happy with the sound for much of the gig.

Given all that, however, he was in marvellous voice.

Looks like 20?

1969: once
1989: twice
2000: once
2002: twice
2004: once
2007: once
2008: once
2010: once
2015: once
2017: twice
2018: once
2022: once
2023: once
2024: twice
2025: twice

All have been exclusively for the Teenage Cancer Trust, besides the 3 that were pre-2000. So not really anywhere close to Clapton, who you'd have to add a 0 to cause he's played there over 200 times I believe. I think its the most played venue of his when you combine all his different guises he's played there with.

I didn't actually realize The Who have only played 4 shows since summer of 2023 and they were all just a pair of Teenage Cancer Trust shows last year and this. Cool that they put in all that work just for these, cause that must be a lot of rust.

I’ve met loads of great people at Who gigs, including people on IORR but is there a Who forum (apart from here) that is worth being on?

Yes, I knew it was nowhere near the crazy number of Clapton! Although after my initial post, I had a little look on Set-List FM, and was surprised it was as little as 20. I guess the Who's longstanding association with RAH made me think it could be more.

Whoever thought that the Who would sack a drummer for playing too loud (Keith Moon would have laughed his head off)

Re: OT: The Who stuff

There were indeed several sound problems at the second RAH gig and Roger had to restart a couple of the songs, as has been widely reported. For him to say "all I can hear is the drums, etc" is surely more a fault of the amp levels/mixing desk/Roger's in ear monitor rather than Zak's playing. To say he wasn't happy with Zak's performance seems odd and to sack him seems extreme. I can't explain.....

From what I saw at the RAH show I went to, and from what I have read over the years, is that Rog seems to be increasingly curmudgeonly, grumpy and angry at everything. Like a typical Daily Fail reader, in fact.

He basically runs the Who show these days.

He didn't like Kenny Jones either, for reasons that are less than clear.

I realise that Pete is a grumpy, contrary mofo too, but seems to get on much much easier with other people than Rog does.

Yeah, I can't imagine why. In interviews, Kenny Jones comes across as about as ordinary and unassuming as one possibly could. Unpretentious and down to earth. He's an excellent drummer, too. I'm sure he kept time better than Moony!

Yep, Kenny indeed seems like a very decent guy, liked by (almost everyone), and, of course, he was put in a very unenviable position to fill Moon's shoes.

I know that Pete in particular really enjoyed his style of playing and working with him.

I don't really know what Rog's problem with him was (and other figures in the Who's history).

He just wants it to feel like The Who, and with Jones it didn’t, particularly. I don’t think it’s more complicated than that. When Pino retired in 2016ish, Rog made a comment that Jon Button was great because he sounded just like Entwistle did, which is a remarkable thing to say given they’d just had 12 years with such an accomplished bassist as Pino. (Who was a great fit for the 2000s Who, I think).

WTF??? This is totally outrageous! Zak is fantastic and brings so much to the peformance. I don't get how he could be blamed for the sound issues they were dogged with on the second night. But I was right on the stage and could see at close hand how pissed off Roger was. Pete was much more sanguine and took it all in his stride, but then he's not the lead singer. I may be wrong but I imagine this outcome is more Roger's doing than Pete's.

I will be seeing Roger solo on Monday and hope he'll be in a better mood winking smiley
