I also had to re-read Pete’s comment regarding Zak Starkey. After the re-read, now I think Pete is not saying that he doesn’t endorse Zach - but simply acknowledging he didn’t have any input in the decision. At least I hope that is the case. In my opinion, Zach seems to do a fine job with the Who tunes.

It sounds like, in his nicest way, he's not saying he hates anyone in this band. Especially Zak who I feel he singles out because it's clear he likes him and people could think Zak is his pick. It sounds like he's saying if up to him, none of these people would be his top choice. Which is admittedly strange, but I assume he doesn't mean it as harsh as it's coming off. I agree though, Zak is an excellent drummer, I honestly can't think of who else it would be in this day and age. Zak's earned that irreplaceable spot over the last 25 years.

Yeah - Pete isn't saying he doesn't like Zak, just that if he were putting together a band from scratch he'd use Simon Phillips. The Who has been Roger's band since 2012.

I received the Who's Next SDL Box last week and listened to the one show included I didnae have before, San Francisco 71.

Very cool and unexpected encore, Going Down.
Never knew they did that one!

OT: Pete Townshend Ronnie Lane "Rough Mix" 1977

Any love for this one? Charlie Watts and Ian Stewart are on it. Recorded to satisfy Ronnie Lanes obligation to the record company after he signed on for and then bailed on a Small Faces reunion. Good tunes, all star cast. Critically acclaimed, sold poorly. I personally like it alot..reminds me of 1977.

Love this album. An underrated classic. 'Heart To Hang On To' is a brilliant, touching song; occasionally played live by Pete over the years.

This is a holy grail for me since around 2004, I've never come across it in a record store but I sure would love to have it.

Love this record.

"My Baby Gives It Away" got a fair amount of FM radio airplay when it was released, but it is correct to say that the album wasn't a big commercial hit.

Yes, that's Charlie playing on that song (and Ronnie Lane's "Catmelody" which also features some great piano by Ian Stewart) but for some reason Charlie wasn't listed on the credits for the original U.S. pressing of the album. This was corrected on the jacket of the re-issue which moved the photo of Pete and Ronnie from inside the original gate fold to the front. (Which was a sound move that I think would have improved the sales of the original release.)

Of all the great stuff on here my favorite song is Ronnie's song "April Fool" (his birthday is April 1st. I think it was in '84 on April 1 when I was watching MTV and J.J. Jackson wished Ronnie a Happy Birthday and held up a copy of the album and sadly noted that it was (then) out of print! J.J. had previously been a DJ on both KMET and KLOS in Los Angeles and he was first and foremost a real music fan.

I was fortunate to see Ronnie perform three times, and even got to meet him once. He autographed my copy of an album he did with Slim Chance called One For The Road which I recommend for anyone who likes his work on Rough Mix.

There is a deep, mature quality about this album that probably didn't initially endear it to many fans of The Who or Faces, but over the years has made it age very well. While I remember getting it that year, it doesn't really remind me so much of 1977 because--like Harry Nilsson's overlooked brilliant Knnillissonn album it stands apart from the trends of what was being talked about (Punk and Disco) or what was getting airplay (Disco and Fleetwood Mac) in the music world then.

There's a DualDisc version of Rough Mix on the Hip-O label that features 3 bonus track and a DVD side with an insightful documentary on the making of the album, where Pete talks about their creative clashes and him kicking Ronnie down some stairs...!

The LP really shines when you compare it to the reformed Small Faces output of the same period (Playmates and 78 in The Shade). Smart decision by Ronnie. Steve looked especially worse for wear in those days.

Terrific album! Bought it when it was released. The story behind it is very interesting. Give Pete credit for being a very good friend to Ronnie in a time of need. I believe Glyn Johns gives a good accounting of how it all went down in his autobiography which is also a great read.

Pete Townshend and Alfie Boe will join other leading musical artists for a world premiere, one-night only performance of Rachel Fuller’s The Seeker, a unique musical and graphic reinvention of Hermann Hesse’s classic novel, Siddhartha, which became a global phenomenon in the 1960s.

This special event will feature performances by Pete Townshend, Alfie Boe, Bollywood superstar Sunidhi Chauhan, South African multimedia artist Nakhane, and Layton Williams, together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Chamber Choir of London. The performance will be narrated by the voice of beloved actor Christopher Plummer and will be conducted by Robert Ziegler, with music arranged by Martin Batchelar.

Inspired by the timeless story of self-discovery and enlightenment in Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha, originally published in 1922 and which to date has sold over 100 million copies worldwide, composer Rachel Fuller’s The Seeker is a musical reimagination of Siddhartha’s message of hope, with additional music and lyrics written by Pete Townshend. The performance concert celebrates the launch of The Seeker album and illustrated novel, released the following day, 7th November.

Harvey Goldsmith, long time promoter of The Who and who worked with Rachel on her musical album, Animal Requiem, said: “I am delighted to be working with Rachel and Pete again. The original Siddhartha book has sold millions worldwide and I am looking forward to presenting Rachel’s music to this wonderful story.”

From Pete Townshend's interview with James Hall of The Standard, published October 24:

The contrarian comes out again after our chat, at a Q&A session in a lecture hall in front of hundreds of Who fans. He’s notably spikier on stage, and his language far fruitier, as though he’s fired up by having his crowd in front of him. He might be approaching 80, but Townshend is far from done yet.

Which brings us to The Who. Townshend and Roger Daltrey recently toured with a full orchestra. New plans are afoot. “I met with Roger for lunch a couple of weeks ago. We’re in good form. We love each other. We’re both getting a bit creaky, but we will definitely do something next year.”

A tour or an album, I ask? “The album side of it… Roger’s not keen. But I would love to do another album and I may try to bully him on that,” Townshend says. On the live side of things, they want to go back to a rawer format. “The last big tours that we’ve done have been with a full orchestra, which was glorious, but we’re now eager to make a noise and make a mess and make mistakes.”

Ditching the orchestra, making a noise and making mistakes. It sounds like a manifesto for The Townshend Studio itself.

Thanks for sharing this, bbj. That is a good read and also gives us promising news for 2025. I'll be all ears for news of The Who's next appearance.

I went to the studio launch and Pete's accompanying talk, which was terrific. The studio was impressive and I can only imagine what joy it must give to those fortunate enough to be able to use it. Pete surely merits his new position as visiting professor at University of West London, which was announced to us that night.

It would be great to hear Pete really give his 100% on a slightly modern day Who album. I don't really need it, but it'd be cool to hear he and Roger do some magic once again. I always thought Endless Wire was lacking.

I'll have to listen! My first thought is "how good could it have been if I never even heard of it!" but I'll chalk that up to there just being so much out there that I guess its easy to pass one by these days. What were some good songs on it?
