The Who’s Pete Townshend Audible Original ‘Words + Music’ Kicks Off New Slate Including Beck, Mariah Carey, Tenacious D: Exclusive

The guitarist touches on his first kiss, Keith Moon's death and struggling to keep The Who together during a tumultuous time in the band's career.

Terry McGough

Pete Townshend has had more than half a century to tell his story. And the guitarist and lyricist for The Who has done so many times: in his searching, poignant lyrics on solo albums and Who releases, his 2012 memoir, Who I Am and countless interviews.

But in his new Audible Original “Words + Music,” Somebody Saved Me (out May 6), the guitarist once known for his windmilling, instrument-bashing style and youth-gone-wild rock operas turns down the volume to focus on a less-inspected period in his career when his commercial prospects were dimming and he struggled to keep the band afloat after the death of gonzo drummer Keith Moon in 1978.

Roger is in great shape. Just don't smoke weed near him or he'll call you out. Funny how he didn't object to it during his That '70s Show appearance.

I got a kick out of it. It came out of conversation about playing music, oh what do you play... bass... talk about instruments. Where are you from... what are you doing in New Orleans... oh, ok, who do you play with?

"You may've heard of them" is all he said.

The Who’s Pete Townshend lost his voice in Dallas. But the show was far from over

A case of vocal failure threatened Thursday’s concert at American Airlines Center. But the band salvaged it, proof of their songs’ enduring power.

Had friends that went to that show. The parking next to the new arena was pricey. They liked the show, had never seen The Who before. I skipped it because of the orchestra.

I was hoping they would have dusted off some more tracks from the Who Are You album for this tour. It's a shame more of those songs don't get played live.

Anyone listened to the Townshend audible podcast 'Somebody Saved Me'

Covering the less well-examined period of 1979-2002 it's an excellent listen, with Pete reworking several of his songs from that era with fantastic results.

Thanks for posting the link BB Johnny.

Townshend's such an elequant speaker, and he really breathes life into Slit Skirts, Eminence Front and all the others.

I love the songs Pete sings & would love to see him perform solo (with a band). Same thing goes for Keith.

Roger's touring in England this summer, but I'm not too interested, I just wish Pete would do some solo shows.

At this stage I'd much prefer to see him play (and talk!) than Keef
