Jealousy, what else? Jeff Beck complimented the Stones with their legacy, calling it "designer sloppiness","still filling stadiums". He even joined the Stones in 2012. And it was big fun, albeit for one song.

I disagree, they are phenomenal live too (5 times Who live, 17 times Stones - Join the Who, Ronnie, they don't tour that often?!).
Sometimes, I felt the Stones were too much of a show band - watching. The Who always were a concert band - listening.

Have you heard Tanglewood 1970? It's a great Tommy era show.
Yes, I've heard it & it's awesome. There's a weird energy during the Woodstock performance that I'm sure has to do with the acid. I think Pete had given it up by then & Roger didn't partake. Roger's vocals are wilder than usual. Another good one is Long Beach (don't remember the exact year but it's in this era). That one is just violent. They were an amazing band back in the day. I love Tommy but like the live versions more. Pete had to cut the guitar overdubs short as they were headed out on the road. I always thought the album could've used more guitar. Live they certainly rectified that. One more good one is Hull the night before Live @ Leeds was recorded. The Who live have been well documented from about 1968 on as I'm sure you know.

I've heard Woodstock and Tanglewood many times and both excellent shows, but different for the reasons you mention. Tanglewood I know well because my dad was at that show so he likes to rub it in. I think he saw them twice at Tanglewood two consecutive years. I always forget which is which, but I think once was with Jefferson Airplane and the next year was with Jethro Tull opening. Tanglewood they are really on fire. Woodstock is great in a kind of rambleshackle way. I didn't know that about the LSD and definitely that and playing at what, 3AM in the total darkness had something to do with it. Its a freewheeling performance and I've also been listening to a lot of Woodstock recently (CSNY, Creedence, Hendrix, The Who) so its very fresh in my mind.
The acid story is well documented. They were tripping balls & did not take it knowingly (well Keith you never know). The story is they went on at 5AM & as they were playing the big finish of Tommy the sun came up behind the stage. The Abbie Hoffman story is documented too & you can hear it happening at the end of Pinball Wizard. Sorry if this is stuff you know. I'm older than dirt & did over 25 years in the music biz before it went away. I like to share stuff with people who are younger than me. My goddaughter (I helped raise her) loves the Who. I took her to see them as one of her early shows. She loves Bob Dylan too. Of course she likes stuff more her age but she has good taste. Except for Mumford & Sons, haha.

The Stone's often don't get full credit for how great they are. That is part of their mystique.

Tickets were being sold for $5-10 the last time The Who ("The Two") came to Alpine Valley (WI) a couple years ago, to help fill the seats. $5. It's more expensive to go to a movie. I think that speaks volumes about local public opinion about a Who concert vs. a Stones concert.

They sold out three nights at the Hollywood Bowl a couple of years ago, and were better than the Stones at Desert Trip both weekends.

What a lovely interview with Roger.
He obviously has got great admiration for The Stones as well as The Beatles, The Kinks and probably so many more great acts.
And of course The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks and The Beatles have all lost members but have carried on in their own way over the years........ as solo or duet acts Roger and Pete , and have got the best of the best whenever they play a live gig and always great to see them performing on stage again.

I was in a Who mood yesterday & played a boot (soundboard) of the entire set at Woodstock. This was an eventful show. First, things were running very late & the band didn't go on until 5:00 AM. Then, someone dosed them with LSD before they went on. During Tommy, Abbie Hoffman stormed the stage & started spouting gibberish. Pete didn't take kindly to this & hit him with his guitar & told him to get off his f'n stage. Even with this, the band sounded amazing through Tommy. Things went a bit south after that. I was particularly struck by Keith Moon's drums during Sparks. Totally amazing. He got locked into a groove that was almost African sounding & beat the hell out of the band. It was a case of lead drums in a very good way. I can't get enough of this era of the band.

The Long Beach recording is Closer To Queen Mary from December 1971 and I agree that is a great one too.
The 2013 reissue of Tommy is a significant improvement on the original with a sound much closer to Who's Next and Quadrophenia.

No I love it! I know most of that background stuff but had just never heard the acid thing. They played it pretty damn well for being out of it, AND in the wee hours of the morning. They're glorious in the film. Sounds like my father is very similar to you and has instilled most of this useless knowledge in my head from an early age lol.
