Speaking of the Doors, as mentioned by the OP, in the following clip drummer John Densmore explains and demonstrates how he came up with the bossa nova beat for the intro to Break On Through.

Keith Moon played a few excellent drum intros on Who albums, such as The Ox (My Generation), I've Had Enough (Quadrophenia), and Pure and Easy (Odds and Sods).

The brilliance of JB. Incredibly simple - one stick on the snare drum, one stick on the crash cymbal, each playing straight quarter notes. So simple, anyone can play it. But, by accenting exactly the right beats, he creates a groove that has your foot tapping before a note is played. Just great.

Influenced by another great drum intro track, Little Richard "Keep A Knockin'"

I always loved the begining of this song. It also sounds almost exactly the same as the intro from the ( Theme from Shaft )

Others

Freeway Jam (Jeff Beck)

Sorry if it has been mentioned but, 1994 and 1995 versions of "You Got Me Rocking" fall into this category which was before they switched to the guitar intro (if I am not mistaken) in 1997.
