what are some good stripped down/minimalist Bowie songs? (originals or covers)... something rather simple but with a raw, eerie or haunting vibe?

A great stripped-down Bowie song is 'Thursday's Child' from his 1999 album "...Hours." There are also some great 'minimalist' songs on his Berlin-era album triogy: "Heroes", "Low" and "Lodger."

The whole of sides 2 of Low and Heroes. Can't get more haunted than that. Here's a good example.

Somehow, I was expecting . . . more from this thread, based on the title. sad smiley

winking smiley

However, doing my best to address the intended topic, I'd say that most of the Space Oddity album seems to fit the required description, or it does for me, anyway.

When he was still David Jones, he did a cover of the Velvet Underground's Waiting For The Man.

There are several versions, both live and rehearsal takes, but this demo is the earliest version.

It seems David Jones has not yet found his "Bowie" voice, as you can tell from his vocals that he really likes Lou Reed--actually, this is what Lou Reed would have sounded like if he really could sing....

Bowie has stripped his material down at a lot of occasions. Many has been released on special editions, live records and so on.
There are plenty of demos, outtakes and alternates of well known songs.
Here are some of my favourites. And this is just the tip of the iceberg:

The 2003 live version of Loving The Alien is incredible:

Here is a nice stripped 1979 version of Space Oddity:

A superb demo version of Quicksand:

Lady Stardust demo:

Ziggy Stardust demo:

1997 version of I Can't Read:

He also did a whole acoustic set for BBC in 1996 to celebrate his 50th birthday.
Here is a couple of great versions:

Lady Stardust:

The live version of "My Death" is very stripped down and is pretty much one of his greatest moments -- well worth seeking out.

The Tin Machine found Bowie playing guitar in a more stripped down basic lineup of four. A "fifth member" provided rhythm guitar. The intent of Tin Machine was for Bowie to counter the lavish sounds and styles of his recent solo albums with a hard rock approach that featured minimal production with a back-to-basics band that funstioned democratically.
