I think around 10 years ago Ronnie appeared on an awards show and was clearly worse for wear....He ended up being called, "You old b*****d" by one of the winners and stormed off looking for Vinny Jones.....

Yes, that was a classic spinal tap moment.

Every Stones press conference I Have seen (parts of) has had some Spinal Tap moments. Like the obligatory question "Will this, finally, be the last tour?". And the Keith mumblings and Charlie hiding in the back...

This interview clip with Brian from the original cut of Charlie Is My Darling might have been an inspiration for some of the stuff in This Is Spinal Tap.

I believe it was trimmed from the version that was put out a few years ago.

Watch this from about 3:00 to the end.

in 1978 at soldier field, after journey but before the stones came out, they had like a family of acrobats (mom, dad, kids of various ages) dressed in pink come out and do flips, jumping on each others shoulders, holding someone above their head by hands, stuff like that. it was funny and kinda surreal. of course the audience screamed FU !

there was also a crew guy in a ted nugent tour t-shirt leaning against the stage on woody's side, looking at the crowd. it was well past the time for the crowd to wait any longer and people started throwing sh*t at him for taunting the crowd. everything was falling way short which caused the guy to mock the crowd, until a flattened coke can missed his head by half an inch.

he instantly moved back out of range. wiped the smirk off his face, too.

From the department of what would have happened if...

I believe a "Spinal Tap Moment" was avoided when someone had broken the crust on Keith's backstage Sheppard's Pie on one of the 90's or 00's tours. I don't remember the details but can remember hearing that there had been much concern on how to fix the problem before Keith found out.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Even though Keith was obviously playing dumb on purpose, I can see Nigel Tufnel saying Keith's line below and meaning it:

Both friends of Keith, Fran Lebowitz and Jimmy Fallon (on The Tonight Show) talked of Fran's frustration that she couldn't smoke backstage.

Fallon said, "Keith Richards was smoking backstage and a staffer said to him, `You're not supposed to smoke.'

"And Keith said, `I know, it's bad for my health' and kept on smoking."

GREAT thread!

I suppose the 1975 phallus reveal would also count. I bet you somewhere there is great footage of that sitting in a film can on a shelf.

That Dirty Work Silly String bit has got to be one of the _lowest_ Spinal Tap moments for the Stones.

We can't forget the hilarious moments in the 1984 Video Rewind compilation.

On the downer side again, pictures and film clips of a 1967-68 totally zonked out Brian Zones with a totally vacant look on his face probably qualifies, but is also sad.

In the song IORR they seem to be "smoking a joint" which is late bad-boy antics for the Stones.

Taking a pee up against a wall.

Another kinda bad moment - landing in that dirigible.

Didn't they once (late 70s) want to hold a free concert on Easter Island?

Pie fight anyone?

What they can't offer in terms of Spinal Tap is failed comeback tours! smiling smiley

That is soooooo bad. Who the hell came up with that. Wish I had seen the promo before I bought the CD. Could have saved $14. It would have turned my off from buying their worst post-60s record. Mick trying to shake teh silly string so it would work is a total spinal tap moment.

IIRC they announced it, but nothing ever came of it. Something to do with possible damage to the statues.

Didn't the bridge malfunction early in the 1997 B2B tour so that they had to walk along the pathway underneath?

Never heard the Easter Island story before, but...

In 1969 the NME in the UK published a rumour that they were going to play the Colosseum in Rome.

By chance I was due to be there on holidays in about the same timeframe, so I called the NME who duly gave me the phone number of The Stones London office to call to ask them about it.

They said that it was "possible".

So we set off as originally planned but diverted to the Colosseum to be there the day before to see if it seemed likely.

No-one was around, no concert (of course, we all know that!). I formed the opinion that a concert inside the Colosseum in its then state would probably destroy it.

(Many years later, it has I gather been partially restored, greatly strenghtened, and Paul McCartney gave a pair of concerts there. One was to a small elite audience inside, and the other was to a vast crows (free) outside.)
