this was great...I particularly liked Words of Wonder.

I'd also like to hear a new Keith album...it's been in the works for a long time, lets just finish it up and put it out.

Of course it's not "authentic reggae" - it's not even remotely pretending to be. So what?
It's cool to hear and cool to watch. And the musicians I've asked about it believe
the musicians involved were indeed playing simultaneously, transmitted to each other by satellite,
and that the resulting track was given gigantic doses of brilliant post-production.
Is that naive, or am I too skeptical? On the one hand, Keith's statement about it
(something like "that's how music should be" ) sounds like many if not all of them did indeed play simultaneously;
on the other hand, what time would it be for it to be daylight in all those assorted locales?

So how is it done? The Play For Change producers must have been asked!

This excerpt from a CNN piece explains how it's done:

It all started in 2004, when Grammy award-winning producer Mark Johnson set off on a musical journey to capture street musicians around the world and combine their voices together.

Bringing his mobile studio and cameras with him, Johnson's mission led him and his small crew to an escapade across the globe -- they tracked the street musicians, put headphones on them and started recording each of their parts, before blending it all together to create unique versions of classic songs, such as "Stand By Me."

From the Rolling Stone article about the video:

All of the musicians, including Richards, play wearing headphones to stay in sync.

Thanks, bye bye johnny - but what are they hearing on the headphones to keep them in sync?

Click track...

They put headphones with a click track on Keith and he wound up saying "that's how music should be"?
I doubt it! tongue sticking out smiley

Suspect it's more than a click track...guide vocal and/or some skeletal instrumental framework.

Yes, but at the end of the day it's recording in the same tempo that makes it possible. Click tracks come in different shapes, from a cowbell to percussive piano phrases...

Right, the fact that they needed to be kept at the same tempo is pretty obvious even to me spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
What I'm asking about is what is it that they're hearing.

In fact some of them might have just been recorded doing their own thing and it was the producers who noticed it would fit in here;
some of them (it seems to me) would need to hear a fairly built-up existing track to add their parts to -
the vocalists/backing vocalists for example.

Does the Ask Keith gizmo on his website still work?

<What I'm asking about is what is it that they're hearing.>

That question is close to impossible to answer, dear with sssoul smiling smiley

But my guess would be that they are hearing a rhythm, and a rough pre-production demo of the track. Then, gradually, as more musicians have recorded their parts, that will be brought into the mix.

Keith probably heard a close to final version of the song while recording.

Well, somebody knows what they play to them!
But what you've just described sounds quite plausible - thank you.

Yeah, I am also interested in what gets recorded first. As Dandelion said, there'd have to be a track (with a guide vocal?) before anybody is filmed. I would imagine that perhaps the musicians comprising some of the "rhythm section" would be recorded / filmed first - bass, main drums, and some guitars? It'd be interesting to ask the producers, unless some article (in somewhere like Mixdown) has already gone into it in detail...

Words of wonder is Keith's song, I would think he'd have production input. I noticed he changed the lyrics a bit, removing the "babble on" part which I always loved.

It sounds like a Winos track with a bunch of other people playing on it. Hard to really discern. Noticed Keith totally changed the words. He does not sing:

Now listen to me baby
I keep it on so low
And I whisper to you sister
Now we're all alone
Take no notice of me baby
Like a dream
Gonna keep it quit
So I can hear you scream
Words of wonder
Are the words I wanna hear

But Tita Tsira does stick to the words written but not all of them. And when Keith comes back in none of them are on the original version.

Keith wags his finger in the first part of the WORDS video like Mick! (Okay, a slight exaggeration.) I actually like this version better than the original.

Maybe 8 years ago Keith wore that same shirt for a magazine photo and in the text the writer made fun of Keith for the shirt (not to Keith). "Keith went and grabbed from his closet an absurdly ridiculous pink shirt" or something like that. And I just thought: "Mr. Writer, yeah, that shirt would probably look ridiculous on YOU."

Playing For Change co-founder Mark Johnson on working with Keith:

"We traveled to record and film Keith Richards in the Caribbean and for days there was not a cloud in the sky,” Johnson recalls. β€œOn the day of the recording a storm came from out of nowhere and it rained like crazy all day until right before sunset. When Keith appeared by the beach the clouds literally parted from the sky, a fire pit started to burn and we were ready to record the legend.”

Keith's new song Words of Wonder

Got Playing for Change #3 CD which features Keith's song Words of Wonder, which is a reggie tune. He is also featured singing on the Bob Marley song Get Up and Stand Up. There is a DVD that is included showing Keith playing on the beach. Every song is a keeper, highly recommended.

Playing for a Change is charity that establishes music education for young people around the world. Taj Mahal and Keb Mo and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band are also on the CD.

IF anyone hasn't been to New Orleans, the Preservation Hall Jazz band is an absolute must. You wait on the street, in the heat for and hour, drinking, waiting to get in this old run down building, standing room only and hear the best jazz in the world.
Taj Mahal is a treasure also I've seen him a few times in person and he's great.
