Well, I got this one on the Virgin reissue of Flashpoint. I've read before that this is the single version but I'm not sure about that.

One of two new studio songs on the live album "Flashpoint" to make it interesting to people who did not want to buy another Stones live album, "Highwire" does the job well but "Sex Drive" doesn't.

It seems like a fairly standard funk groove and overall, it comes across like a song that is not essential. I almost daren't say an outtake. It's proof the Stones were a funk band even before Darryl Jones became their bass player.

If "Highwire" came last in the track selection of "Flashpoint" and thus were Bill Wyman's swan song with the band, "Sex Drive" would be a mere afterthought.

The only Stones song with the word “sex” in the title, and ironically it is just a lame, forgettable piece of filler … faux James Brown without spark or excitement. But seeing Charlie playing a therapist to an over-sexed Jagger in the video is priceless.

The "Dirty Hands Mix" version is better than the album version IMO.

- album version (5:07) - available on the original CBS album and on the 2009 Universal reissue

- single edit (4:30) - which replaced the album version on 1998 Virgin reissue

- "Dirty Hands Mix" (4:46) - available on Sex Drive CD single

- "Club Version" aka 12" mix (6:00) - available on Sex Drive CD single

Another low point of the Vegas era Stones ... no rhythm, no melody, a boring series of noise.

It even has an "Edited Club Version" 4.30 - on a 4 track Japan-promo.

Haven't we discussed this song recently in a TT ?! Anyway, yes, I'm a sucker for a funky grove but this song being one of the rare (only?) Stones song without a melody, it quickly becomes boring.

I think I remember reading in early 1992 in Dieter Hoffmann's Weissbuch that it started as a jam in Tokyo during the SW tour...I suppose some tapes of that must have "circulated" at the time.

I preferred this one to High Wire. Both are a bit bland, but I see the direct connection from High Wire to Don't Stop, and me no likey.

I've only listened to it start to finish once, and I'll never get that time back.

I think of Slipping Away as Bill's swan song. I guess it's because Highwire and Sex Drive are so disappointing I hardly think of them as Stones songs at all. Bill seems to be already gone, but he's still a funkier, more in the pocket bass player than Darryl Jones ever was with the Stones.

A song based solely on the funky groove, with no melodical ideas to lean on, is a risky business for a rock and roll band. The Stones can do that - think of "Hot Stuff" or "Dance" - but this one, like noted almost by everyone here, fails bad. Really poor white man's watered down James Brown. Not even the Stones always nail different trends of American black music with their unique touch - and this one was already a kind of retro funk thing in 1991. Boring - I think even the basic guitar riff is somehow lifeless and dull - not having that spark a great funk riff should have. They don't sound sexy at all (as a song like this should sound), no matter how much explicit they are. They sound, you know, just old.

Can never raise any enthusiasm for this one. As gotdablouse says, the groove quickly becomes boring, and the lyrics are just trying too hard--when Jagger has to keep insisting that he's really keen on sex, you know there's something wrong.

Vile Weed, nothing more imho.

I like the funky guitars and the Sax solo. It is not a James Brown classic. I's a product of the eighties.

One of their poorer efforts.

This is almost a jump the shark moment to me. No wonder Bill left at this point. The song is so boring even the sax can't add interest. Mick's 80's pop singing style is cringe worthy. And as stated no melody or hook at all. It's like Mick wanted some sort of updated James Brown sexy funk style song. Bad Bad Bad.

That they or Mick wanted this as a single show how far off the mark they had become.

Real rock fans like my young self at the time never vacated RNR as the 80's past by. It was part of me. I really wish the Stones stayed true to themselves. Of course it's just a song and a terrible one at that.

A sign of the "corporate rock" times that this was so sterile - it's no "Dance", let's put it that way.

Jagger did get this sort of formula right, in my opinion, a few years later, with Sweet Thing. That was a great funky tune that sounded genuine. The Stones bettered Sex Drive a bit with Suck On The Jugular, and then later with Rain Fall Down, which I think is a great track. But I guess 1991 was no time for the Stones to do anything very interesting, just like many of their peers...
