The Rolling Stones at the Waldbühne in Berlin in 1965 !!

From Wikipedia .........

Post-war[edit]

After World War II, the Olympic grounds were within the British occupation sector of Berlin. They were released for public use beginning in 1948,[11][13] and the amphitheatre was used for film showings, including for the Berlinale,[14] and beginning in 1960 for boxing matches. Use for concerts began in the 1960s,[13] but when the Rolling Stones performed there on 15 September 1965, the theatre was severely damaged. Fans stormed the stage, and after the band left after a set of only 20 to 25 minutes, fought police, who attempted to control them with rubber truncheons and fire hoses, and destroyed the seating, fire hydrants and other furnishings. 270,000 DM in damage was done, in a riot that fulfilled the dire prophecies of some Berlin newspapers about rock concerts and was the first inter-generational battle of the 1960s in Germany.[15][16][17] A reporter from Bild wrote of the concert, "I know Hell."[[/color]18] The arena had to be completely renovated[13][19] and was then little used until 1978.[13][14][20]

Following a concert by Bob Marley in 1980, it became well known as a rock venue, and has been regularly used for that purpose since.[11][13] Other artists who have appeared there include Depeche Mode,[21] Metallica,[22] Queen,[23] U2, Eric Clapton,[14] Tina Turner,[24] Muse and Rod Stewart.[25] Barbra Streisand gave her first concert in Germany there in 2007.[26] It also hosts classical music concerts, including by the Berlin Philharmonic, an open-air film series,[13] and special events including an appearance by the Dalai Lama[27] and televised football matches.[28]

The facility seats more than 22,000,[29] in three ranks that rise 30 metres (98 ft);[13] the last row of seats, the 88th, is also 93.5 metres (307 ft) from the centre of the orchestra pit, so originally 40 microphones were installed on-stage, feeding 10 coordinated groups of loudspeakers.[3] In 1982, a canopy costing 200,000 € was erected over the stage, providing both a visual and an acoustic barrier.[13] Concert promoter Peter Schwenkow leased it from 1981 until the end of 2008, when the lease was transferred to CTS Eventim.[13][30]

The 1998 show was such a great memory. Just like Hollywood Bowl. The Stones in an amphi theatre. Perfect setting. If you can travel then go there. It will be a great show.

The Italian tickets are fr. €78 direct from the vendor when they go on sale on the 20th March so why pay €349? And Rome in 2007 had empty seats so I don't think you'll even have to hurry...

Wikipedia says this about that show:

when the the Rolling Stones performed there on 15 September 1965, the theatre was severely damaged. Fans stormed the stage, and after the band left after a set of only 20 to 25 minutes, fought police, who attempted to control them with rubber truncheons and fire hoses, and destroyed the seating, fire hydrants and other furnishings. 270,000 DM in damage was done, in a riot that fulfilled the dire prophecies of some Berlin newspapers about rock concerts and was the first inter-generational battle of the 1960s in Germany.[15][16][17] A reporter from Bild wrote of the concert, "I know Hell."

Do you remember any rioting?

I was talking to a guy yesterday who attended the the `65 Waldbuehne show.
he was aged about 20 then and I asked him about the seats being ripped out. How and why did that happen?

Those seats where not safe at all, he said. to stand on them he'd make sure it was supported by the concrete or stone they where fixed to. a small, skinny friend of his just broke through, standing in the middle, not even going wild.
after many years, weatherd by sun, rain and snow, the seats had a consistency of cardboard boxes. one couldn't tell by just looking at them because they were covered with thin, brittle brown plastic, perhaps bakelite used for garden furniture.
the claim that the audience deliberately ripped out the seats wasn't true, it just broke because they were old and rotten.
by todays standards the venue and/or the promoter would get sued galore for accepting such unsafe seats.

The stage had a decorative wooden fence infront of the concrete stone stage.
that got ripped out when more folks rushed to the front of the stage when the Stones came on.
font row of course, trying to hold on thight, had the pieces of fence in their hands pretty soon. since there where nails sticking out of the wood, they were thrown onto the side of the stage. who wants to step into a rusty nail in the middle of wild crowd?
but that's when police and security threw that stuff back into the crowd which of course escalated quickly into a battle.

anyway, that's what my mate told me.

The early 1960s were relatively calm compared to the previous decade, during which clashes relating to rock 'n' roll and negative social stereotypes associated with the labels ‘Halbstarke’, ‘teddy boys’, and ‘juvenile delinquents’ constantly made the headlines.
