In general I don't like the Stones' attempts at reggae very much. It lacks depth, murkiness, darkness. The only exception I'd make for "Feel On Baby" which has a bit of all that.
Having said that, "Send it to me" is okay to listen to, it's not bad either, and certainly better than "Too Rude" or "Cherry Oh Baby".

Wow. I have such disdain for most of Emotional Rescue that I had to look up this song on YouTube. It hardly rang any memory bells. Probably only listened to it then because you couldn't just skip to the next cut on an LP from your remote on the couch. A B-side at best.

Always loved this one from this record and if I'd have knowen at the time how this was to be the last truely great record by the band I would have loved it even more when it came out.

Great song. I prefer the extended version that runs 6:18 with a couple extra verses and a longer outro

But this one isn't really a reggae, merely a pop/rock song dressed in reggae-clothes. Listen to the beat smiling smiley

I love Toots, btw thumbs up

"Fun" Stones at their best, you can understand why the fans who'd experienced the 68/72 years first hand were (and still are) completely appalled though ;-)

At their best? Mmmm. Yes, I guess most fans from the beginning until 1974 were appalled indeed. At least I was. Since then the Stones got a new fan base which I never have been able to take serious, because they were primarily fans of the Fun Stones.

1974?

Fans of Short And Curlies surely thought it was a huge quality drop...

I like S and C, it swings. Some nice guitar and piano playing. But especially Ain't To PTB, IORR and, though in a lesser degree, the repetitive Luxury are remarkable low points. But then we got Dance LS, FF and of course Time WFNO

And the songs on ER don't swing?

Not in the way S and C does. ER is fun Stones, as someone put it rightly (or, positively, a big sign of self mockery). The entertaining Stones, if you like more explanation. The artistic Stones were gone by that time. The same goes for the whole SG-album, except BOB and perhaps BTMMR, though I find its lyrics beyond quality Stones level (self-pity).

And Where The Boys Go, Summer Romance and Dance aren't "fun" Stones?

Yeah, the former is really a serious, poetic piece of contemporary music, that's right grinning smiley

All fun Stones of course Dandie. I don't like the fun Stones as you know.

In the context of the song it doesn't come across as a funny experience.

It's classic "fun Stones", though. Brainless and harmless, but good bluesrock smiling smiley

I've always enjoyed it, although the songwriting is so so, imo...

I feel Charlie is getting the reggae beat down pretty well on this one, better than he did on Cherry Oh Baby.

SilverDagger said of "Sex Drive" that that song is in a serious need of Viagra. But that's not true as far as "Send It To Me" goes - in this song as throughout the whole album Jagger is a bloody bleeding vulcano and the band, despite lacking some focus and inspiration in song-writing, hot as hell. EMOTIONAL RESCUE catches the band in their most decadent, arrogant, sleazy mood ever. Jagger never been so dirty and playful as he is here.

"Send It To Me" is a typical EMOTIONAL RESCUE number in that sense. There is not much creativity and probably time wasted in song-writing, but once again, it's the singer not the song. A perfect template for Jagger to put all the passion there and show his unique interpretation skills (my favourite part is teh sudden empathic, low-sounded, straight "Send It To Me" after repeating the phrase with his twisted, nasty voice). The band discover their best take on reggae ever, and a wonder happens once again: the Stones sound totally at home there, managing to sound nothing but The Rolling Stones.

The guitar intro a little gem of its own - I still clearly remember when I first listened EMOTIONAL RESCUE long, long time ago. That stood out and sounded so promising - until the song really started, which horrifed me - wasn't any reggae fan yet, and Jagger sounded soooo strange...grinning smiley Took some time to appreciate it, as it was with the whole album.

They don't do fillers like this anymore...

"She could be the Alien, send her to me."

This movie was a hit at the time so probably what Mick was referencing.

I only saw this movie recently, which is probably why it came to mind.

Great Song! In my top 5 at least lyrics-wise.

If you don't like this song you either don't have any c**k or you are a woman.

It's an excellent track and mixed superbly - an infectious groove that swings deep in the pocket with a cleverly simple lyric.

Judging by the lyrics, Mick thought they were recording a comedy record.

One wonders if the rest of the band ever realized that this song got released, and shudders to think how they would feel about it.

A great example of why, although ER was a well produced album with strong efforts from the musicians, it remains in the bottom third of their catalog.
