Not exactly "new" news, but Aaron Neville talked to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune about working with Keith on 'My True Story' ahead of a show in Florida last week.

Aaron Neville on working with Keith Richards to tell ‘Story': interview

Aaron Neville spent his childhood with his ear pressed against the family radio listening to his favorite R&B, gospel, pop, doo wop and hillbilly singers, quietly singing along until he eventually established a voice of his own. It’s a near-soprano instrument of tonal purity and vibrato perfection that serves as a conduit for true emotion. As a solo artist, Grammy winning duet partner with Linda Ronstadt and member of the Neville Brothers, Aaron Neville has recorded numerous styles of soulful music since first reaching the national charts as a solo artist in 1960.

On last year’s “My True Story,” his debut for the prestigious jazz label Blue Note Records, Neville revisits his youth on a masterful album of doo wop classics co-produced by an unlikely collaborator, Keith Richards. “I can still listen to it and smile and think about the session and all the guys who played on it,” Neville says by phone. “The musicians were so great. We went in with 21 songs and recorded 23 in five days. Keith would say, ‘Bunch of hard musicians acting like kids.’ It felt like the 1950s.”

In addition to co-producing “My True Story” with Blue Note president Don Was, Richards plays guitar on the album. Although Neville, best known for his easy listening radio hits of the 1990s and the Rolling Stone bad boy might seem like an odd pairing, they have a long history. The Rolling Stones had Aaron’s brother Art Neville’s band The Meters open for them in 1975 and ’76 and then The Neville Brothers shared the stage with The Stones in front of stadium crowds in 1981. Several years later, Richards appeared on the Neville Brothers’ album “Uptown.” Around the same time, Richards asked Aaron’s son, keyboardist Ivan Neville, to join his X-pensive Winos band for his excellent solo record “Talk Is Cheap” and subsequent tour.

“Me and Keith have been friends for a long time,” the 73-year-old Neville says. “We are two human beings from different worlds but with the same love of music, and music is the international language.”

Neville tells an interesting story about their shared appreciation of the title track. Recorded by The Jive Five, “My True Story” was a big hit in 1961. That’s a year after Neville had released his first single while still a young man in New Orleans and about a year before the formation of The Rolling Stones in London. Nonetheless, it has always been a special song to Neville and Richards, who worked with Don Was on The Rolling Stones’ 1994 album “Voodoo Lounge.”

“When Don was producing ‘Voodoo Lounge’ he told me he heard Keith playing ‘My True Story’ on a loop,” Neville says. “He was just listening to it over and over.”

A smart reworking of The Drifters’ classic “Under the Boardwalk” is another highlight of the album “My True Story.” The Rolling Stones included a version of “Under the Boardwalk” on the band’s “12 X 5” album in 1964. On June 21 of last year, The Rolling Stones played the penultimate show of the U.S. leg of the group’s “50 & Counting” tour at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Following a rousing rendition of “Gimme Shelter,” Neville joined the Stones to sing lead with Mick Jagger on “Under the Boardwalk.” When the song ended, the two vocalists embraced. Richards, in the back with the rest of the band, flashed a giant grin, as if he were just glad to be witnessing the historic event.

“Keith is one of the most down-to-earth guys I have ever met,” Neville says. “He’s a great big star but it doesn’t come over like that.”
