Show Flashbacks

I thought it would be interesting to do a flashback on shows we’ve attended and share quirky stories. Maybe it will catch on, maybe it won’t. I would be curious to hear the recollections of fans who attended shows in the 70’s.

I’ll start with October 17, 1997 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This was my third show on Babylon tour.

The set was:
1. Satisfaction
2. It's Only Rock'n Roll
3. Flip The Switch
4. Let's Spend The Night Together
5. Gimme Shelter
6. Love In Vain
7. Anybody Seen My Baby
8. 19th Nervous Breakdown
9. Out Of Control
10. Star Star
11. Miss You
12. All About You (Keith)
13. I Wanna Hold You (Keith)
14. Little Queenie (center stage)
15. Crazy Mama (center stage)
16. You Got Me Rocking (center stage)
17. Sympathy For The Devil
18. Tumbling Dice
19. Honky Tonk Women
20. Start Me Up
21. Jumping Jack Flash
22. Brown Sugar (encore)

Giants Stadium was the site of my first Stones show on August 15, 1994 so it will always have a special place in my heart, despite being a parking lot now. I always heard that the swamps of Jersey stink and they did that night in August. This Friday night in October was freezing so the smell was nowhere to be found When I listen back to my bootleg I remember the exact moment during Crazy Mama where I thought to myself “Christ, I’m freezing”.

On the way to the show, I was driving from Pennsylvania with two friends, we had the second night debate. Since Sister Morphine was played the night before we were sure we would get something different. Enter Love In Vain. Awesome.

This was the time of the web vote and Factory Girl had won the night before. I didn’t know what the choices were for this night until my friend said to me “One of the songs is something you said you would love to hear a 54 year old man sing.” Of course, Mick sang “baby, baby” at the beginning of IORR so we knew what had won. I clearly remember Ronnie sharing the mic with Mick. I went on to hear this in DC and Syracuse (the train wreck version) but this is the one I always come back to hear.

I didn’t hate You Got Me Rocking at this point but I was still on cloud nine from hearing Crazy Mama.

Babylon was also my favorite Keith segment because those two songs were risks; who really knew them except the sick people? I can still close my eyes and see the lighting scheme for Wanna Hold You – who remembers crap like that?
