I wonder if one day, upon reflection, Jagger or Richards might sit down for an interview, when its all truly over, and no PR left to do really, and just do a John Lennon when the interviewer launches a bunch of song titles their way.... I can see Jagger at least, and probably Richards too, dismissing a few as ..... "a piece of garbage".... smiling smiley

They didn't work on its structure obviously - it's Brown Sugar in reverse.

I thought it was a good opening track for the album, especially considering the previous album. Just the opening riffage completely wipes away DIRTY WORK.

Funny album, STEEL WHEELS is. It's good but it's not. It has some good songs that aren't so... they're just good. Although Hearts For Sale, Almost Hear You Sigh and Slipping Away are probably the stand out tracks.

Standout tracks for me, are Mixed Emotions (the hit), Terrifying (the explorer), Almost Hear You Sigh (the big ballad) and Slipping Away (the Keith). The rest are more or less standard numbers.

I don't know why Blinded By Love gets shorted on this site. It has brilliant lyrics and incredible musicianship. This song and Slipping Away are up there with their greatest. (And they both have Bill's beautiful, understated bass.)

Don't forget Continental Drift as the other "explorer"!

thumbs up

But, as DP said, Continental Drift, too! smileys with beer

Terrifying has probably grown to be my favourite on the album.

I think SW has aged well. I don't mind the production either, save Can't Be Seen and Hold On To Your Hat.

Sad Sad Sad is a very good song from a very bad album. Or is it only a good song that seems to be very good compared to the rest of the album? In 1989 I couldn´t wait to get my copy and the A-side starts very good but then it goes downhill very fast...it becomes more and more boring... the whole b-side is Stones-unworthy (except Break The Spell). It was the first Stones-album that left me disappointed, something like that never happened before. But unfortunately it happened again in 1994 and 1997.

The songs i enjoy are:
Mixed Emotions
Sad Sad Sad
Hearts For Sale
Hold On To Your Hat
Break The Spell

...the rest is pale and lame, imo. 1989 was a turning point for the Stones in many ways.

Insignificant song, the umpteenth part of this endless 'I was a punk before you were a punk' style series of songs that we had to go through since ages.

Maybe. But it's still better than DIRTY WORK.

It's not a hit song by any means. But actually fresh blood in their stale 60s/70s setlists these days. It's recognition that there was a Stones world even past 1981...
And I rather listen to Sad, Sad, Sad then Same old, Same old, Same old. The version they did in Chicago was actually quite good. And refreshing...

I was surprised! Ten positive posts in a row before the first thumbs down. I was expecting it to be the opposite for some reason, because it's post-Tattoo You. It's a great way to open an album--a big, bold opening--just like their shows. Perhaps they'll surprise us one time and open a show with Sad Sad Sad.

Then we will just moan about MICK @#$%& up the intros winking smiley
Of course you always have Jagger to blame, for about everything what,s wrong with the Stones

Dirty Work (song) beats Sad Sad Sad every time.

I didn't mean to say that Sad Sad Sad is bad as such. I'm in a forgiving mood today so I will give it a 7 out of 10. As I would give the album as a whole. But then, I'd give DW (the album) a 7 also winking smiley DW (the song) indeed is a favourite of mine.

Hearts For Sale maybe is Steel Wheel´s strongest track. But Terrifying... is pure 80s crap imo and has studpid lyrics. And it was awful boring live.
