<Keith mimed the piano>

Isn't that interesting? He did that on LSTNT as well, a song we know he played/co-played piano on..

No. smiling smiley

Brian mimed the piano on LSTNT.

Sorry, I was thinking of Have You Seen Your Mother... smiling smiley

We sure have, but he plays it differently. There are some passages that are similar, though.

Like they ever played things exactly the same. The other takes would probably feature many variations. smiling smiley

It was brought up via Mathijs point, which was a wrong one.

Anyway, we have footage of Brian playing Ruby Tuesday on piano.

I think I've seen some things but they seem to be inconclusive and it doesn't sound much like the piano on the recording.

This is just the backing track with no Mick.

That's true.

Prior to 1989, they played JJF differently on every tour grinning smiley

It's different, but much the same too.

Were it Jack you'd be using it as part proof he played piano on the track. winking smiley

Brian's left hand playing is somewhat consistent in places, re the playing on the studio track.

Someone who was there would know more than IORR posters.

Bill was there.

Q: Do you believe that Brian had a strong influence on some Jagger/Richards compositions? 'Ruby Tuesday' springs to mind.

A: Not in the writing -- yes in the arranging.

On 'Ruby Tuesday' was it Brian or Jack Nitzsche on piano?

A: I don't think Brian ever played piano on record.

Yeah, but in his Rolling With The Stones it say's Brian played piano on it.

Also "I don't think..." is hardly a strong instance of remembering well.

It boils down to which side of Bill that is most trustworthy grinning smiley

For sure if that footage showed Jack playing exactly the same, howled and a host of others would say it's conclusive proof that Jack played the piano on the record. grinning smiley

Well, sometimes a wrong name can be because of an editor or something.

In that interview, Bill is asked directly if it was Brian or Jack and he says that Brian didn't record any piano with the Stones and that leaves Jack, Stu and Keith and it's not Stu's style and Keith isn't likely, so it looks like Jack to me until Keith or someone comes out with the answer in an "Ask Keef".

Well, if it was Brian so be it, I'm not trying to insert Jack just for the #$$% of it.

But, as Bill points out, when has Brian played piano on a Stones recording.

The Stones had a choice of piano players in the pecking order before Brian.

If anyone was likely to work on the basic piano arrangement it would have been Keith and he probably played a basic version to Jack who polished it up.

Brian would have worked on the recorder parts arrangement IMO.

He say's "I don't think", not definitive answering.

Also, Hopkins etc could play pants off Jones on organ, but he played that at sessions.

Tis the usual thing of needing loads more proof for a possible Brian contribution being accepted as being a Brian contribution. winking smiley

Of course, it might have been Jack, but there's kinda slightly better hint that it might have been Brian... we see him playing it soon after it was recorded.

Brian at very least contributed the great recorder backing, and he and Keith apparently were involved in the recording session all the way through.

There's not much available on the actual writing of the song that you can count on as the truth. But I don't care, it's just a great song either way.

The recorder makes the song, IMO.

What do you mean? It is a song about Linda Keith.

Your point?

That it's about Linda Keith is what Keith maintains, but does not say more. And Jagger (somewhere) says he didn't have anything to do with the songwriting.

Beyond that, though (regarding the music, the melody, even the recording process) there's very little or nothing at all. We can't even get straight if it's Brian on piano, for God's sake.

I start with Bockris:

"According to Victor Bockris, Richards came up with the basic track and the words and finished the song with Jones in the studio."

I might remember that one wrong, or I am mixing up the "neither which I wrote"-quotes.

This is what Mr. Jagger has said in reference to Ruby Tuesday -

"WENNER: “Yesterday’s Papers.”
JAGGER: Yeah, the first song I ever wrote completely on my own for a Rolling Stones record. “My Obsession,” that’s a good one. They sounded so great, but then, later on, I was really disappointed with it. Isn’t “Ruby Tuesday” on there or something? I don’t think the rest of the songs are that brilliant. “Ruby Tuesday” is good. I think that’s a wonderful song.
WENNER: Why?
JAGGER: It’s just a nice melody, really. And a lovely lyric. Neither of which I wrote, but I always enjoy singing it. But I agree with you about the rest of the songs – I don’t think they’re there. I don’t think I thought they were very good at the time, either.
