The two first RCA sessions would have each made for a great album on their own.

65-66

68-71

and 77-79.

VERY impressive ... but prolly not up to Dylan's '65, the year in which he recorded BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME, HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED, and BLONDE ON BLONDE. Busy guy.

Wow! Incredible productivity...

They really weren't wasting time in studio back then. The AFTERMATH material - 21 songs - was recorded in two 5-6 day sessions (in December and March). And taking how adventurous and experimental they were, man, that's really impressive! For example, there weren't too much time for Brian Jones to work out his parts with 'exotic' instruments. They had more time to use for BETWEEN THE BUTTONS material, but still amazing.

Now in hinsight it is rather understable that they might not exactly remember what did and what in those sessions. No time to make mental notes!

Just fooling around with the idea that they would have just one album of those one year 'pop song' sessions (the routine they would some day have). What an incredible album it had been - great song one after other..

1. 19th Nervous Breakdown
2. Mother's Little Helper
3. Lady Jane
4. Paint It Black
5. Under My Thumb
6. Out of Time
7. Sittin' On A Fence

1. Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby?
2. Yesterday's Papers
3. Let's Spend The Night Together
4. Back Street Girl
5. Connection
6. Miss Amanda Jones
7. Ruby Tuesday

If one wants edit the album into a standard 12-song piece, skip "Out of Time" and "Miss Amanda Jones"...

Yeah, The Stones worked seemingly as quick and effective as Dylan normally does. I also tend to think that especially the songs Mick and Keith were written for AFTERMATH sessions were rather worked out and finished deals by the time they entered to studio and introduced them to others. So the idea of arrangement was really that - not deeply affecting to the constitution of the songs. In the sense, not much differing from Dylan routines.

But one thing needs to be noted when admiring that sea of songs... if anything that gives a goddamn strong reason why Keith Richards took the charge in the band, and how strongly that position was cemented, no matter what would happen in the following decades. Almost all of the songs are his compositions (some "Yesterday's Papers" is an exception) - and what an incredible range of different type of songs! The guy was a force of nature as far as the melodies go! And that was before he started build up songs from guitar experiments and riffs - so, most of the songs are I guess 'traditional' chord based, melody-lead compositions.

Everything that made Blonde on Blomde was recorded in 1966. Even the New York sessions with the hawks were early '66.

Exactly. An amazing year altogether in pop world, the things were happening very rapidly and hecticly, and the big ones - The Beatles, Dylan and The Stones - were in the height of their powers. It was also around the time when these 'pop stars' started to give idea to their minds that maybe everything wasn't just a passing trend, but it would might have a more lasting value, and what they were doing, was noy just pure 'pop', but something more valuable and significiant, 'art-like'.

I would prefer a complete release of the Chess tapes. After Out of Our Heads unfortunately the pop influence grew prominent. In 68 they went back to their blues roots. Without this turnaround they wouldn't be the band I like. This doesn't mean that I don't like some titles from 66/67.

And, FYI most, if not all, of these songs I listen to regularly grinning smiley

That's more songs in a year than they've recorded in two decades!

This was the beginning of the Stones (and pop/rock in general) going from a singles band making albums to an album band who release singles. It's somewhat ironic that American television went to from black and white to color in 1966-67 season. Because the same could be said of the Stones music from 1965-66. Aftermath has a gritty quality that evokes a nice black and white photo while Between the Buttons is brighter, more colorful, both in sound and cover. Swinging London sliding into the Summer of Love.

The evolution of the band during those twelve months is astounding. Aftermath and Between the Buttons sound it could've come from two different bands. Prouction technology advances helped too of course. But in some ways they were so prolific and growing creatively as musicians at the time that during those succession of albums from Aftermath to Satanic Majesties shows a band still trying to find their sound. It was like they were in such a state of discovery and high motivation-being pulled by their muse so intensely that each album was its own statement rather than a follow up.

Whereas the big four establishes a sound with Beggars, creating a platform to build upon continuing to evolve and mutate it until reaching its natural conclusion on Exile. For lack of a better term those albums created what many would consider the "Stonesy sound".

The three which follow finds the band in another period of identity crisis, but from lack of creativity and motivation instead of too much. Then the simplicity of Some Girls hearkened back to their mid-60s pop peak albeit with a speedball rush of punk and country spiked with JD. SG is nothing like the material they recorded 65-66 but it is a return to a kind of pop simplicity they discarded after those sessions.

Actually September 65 to December 66 is my favourite period in music, period. Those 15 months saw the biggest advancement in musical sound ever, for any similar time period. Fuzz guitars, backwards tapes, verispeed, pop orchestration and great, great songwriting.

The Stones, The Beatles, The Who, The Yardbirds, The Hollies, The Animals, Manfred Mann, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Love, Dylan, the arrival of Hendrix to name just some of the artistes that changed the musical spectrum.
