We have lived in the greatest generation of music!

I believe, this one is a 'must have' for any collector

THE HOLLIES/20 GOLDEN GREATS EMI CDP 7 46238 2 This came out in 1986 on CD, from England using the 1978 LP for the song selection. However, the tapes used were first generation stereo mixes, mastered flat! The ONLY way to hear the original stereo mixes in their good/bad glory. (c) Steve Hoffman

2CD compilation is good too.
THE HOLLIES ALL THE HITS AND MORE - THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION EMI CDS 7 90850 2 This came out in 1988, as a two CD set from England. More songs than on the CD I mentioned above, but not as "warm" sounding. Still, this is the last Hollies British import to use original tapes without SIGNAL PROCESSING!!! (c) Steve Hoffman

Fabulous band. Like them so much that I named my daughter after one of their hits - (not hard to figure out!) I'm just reading Graham Nash's book which is a great read.

Here's a song you might not know by them. Kind of mod-ish freakbeat from 66.

Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress?

ok, perhaps a bit long and a bit hefty with Silver Dagger as the surname grinning smiley

nontheless, a great song that I don't get tired of.

You're not from Massachusetts, are you? I took "Carrie Anne" to the senior prom and her parents always told her that she was named after that song.

I grew up in the 60's and definitely agree with the BIG 5 U.K. bands.

Many more like..........
Spencer Davis Group
Manfred Mann
The Animals
The Yardbirds
The Pretty Things
The Small Faces
The Nashville Teens
Them
The Zombies
The Troggs
Cream
The Move
Loads of Merseybeat Bands

The Big 5 were definitely all just a notch or two above the rest ,and apart from The Beatles and The Kinks, are still going in one form or another. winking smiley

I seem to recall reading someplace that "Carrie Ann" was really "Marianne", as in Faithful….the song was about Marianne Faithfull

Now that you mention it, I remember hearing that too...

From Wikipedia:

"In 1995, Graham Nash revealed that he had written the song for Marianne Faithfull but was "too shy" to use her real name."

Apparently your memory is pretty good!

Peace,
Mr DJA

In the DVD, Alan Clarke talks about the origins of Carrie Anne. He said he heard Graham and Tony working on a song that sounded like Mr. Tambourine Man with the name Marianne which changed to Carrie Anne. The song was almost written but he wrote the part You're so like a woman to me.
Before I saw the interview I never thought of any connection between Tambourine Man and Carrie Anne but I guess the chorus is a bit similar. Also, I thought Alan sang the whole song until I saw the video. He sings the first verse, Tony sings the second and Graham sings the last.
