Im with Dandie here..the live albums are better BUT..its probably because classic studio double albums are rare..and they are mostly too long. .filled with the odd "filler" which you skip.
Great live albums are classic performances of great songs..the longer they are the better!

Another 1 for consideration: Zen Arcade by Husker Du.

The Smashing Pumpkins are in that list? Hahaha... confused smiley
If you wanna pick a double album made in the 90's choose NIN's "The Fragile"
instead.

If you think "Tonight Tonight" is better than "The Day the World Went Away" you have a problem or... you're 8! grinning smiley

The Stones - Some Girls Live In Texas
The Kinks - One For The Road
Derek And The Dominoes - Layla And Other Assorted...
The Byrds - Untitled/Unissued
The Stones - Exile
Taj Mahal - Maestro
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
The Kinks - To The Bone
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
The Kinks - Everybody's In Showbiz

You actually think SOME GIRLS LIVE IN TEXAS is better than EXILE ON MAIN STREET? If so, please justify!grinning smiley

It's as simple as I'm into concert albums for the moment - as you probably can tell from lots of the titles on my list (5 of them are purely or partly concert albums).

SG Live In Texas on vinyl is also a more interesting listen than Exile, right now thumbs up

Fair enough!thumbs up

All these Rolling Stone lists are ridiculous.
These people are never into anything new, they live in the past.
Why the hell one would want to compile such a list is unclear to me.
Time could have been spent better digging out cool new stuff instead of going over the old that their readership already knows.
I love playing those records mentioned, but I don't need rolling stone to tell me about them. Why doesn't rolling stone write about Deafheaven, for instance?
Even in their metal list they were conservative. They put in a live recording of Mastodon in there. Mastodon as a band were great but their last studio effort was a bit of a dogshit in the doorway. They have released a couple of years ago a live recording already. The new release is good, but only digital, and why should that feature?
Damn rolling stone and their tired conservatism.

This forum is full of boring-old-fart conservatism.
And I looooove $%&#ing with them hot smiley

Not the best one (the top five for me would be Exile, Blonde on Blonde, Quadrophenia, London Calling and The River in that order) but definitely one that appears to have been overlooked and certainly one of the top 10, despite it's faults.

There's been quite a few interesting double albums over the years, too many to have a top ten list. I think 'Exile,' however, should be up there on anybody's top ten list (pop or rock and roll music).

My favorite double album, though, is Beatles White Album. Great variety of sound and song.

Exile ... White Album ... Quadrophenia ... London Calling

All about equal in my rating, and close behind: Rattle & Hum

I agree that the mag's obsession with lists of the best this and that has become way overdone. I blame the "High Fidelity" book and film for sparking the trend (although both book and film are great)

Personally I think Exile is way overrated as a stones album although it's still better than frigging Pink Floyd and much much better than the White Album. The appeal of Exile to trendy rock journo's is as much the supposedly wild and debauched circumstances of its making as the music itself.

Here goes ...
The Beatles were (at the time) better than the Stones.
That said ..
1. Exile - most exciting, clearly
2. White Album - deepest and greatest variety
3. Pulse - beautifully recorded
4. Blonde - holy crap on a cracker !
then the rest (although Electric Ladyland and Layla count for a whole lot)

My top 5 live albums:

1. Humble Pie - Performance Rockin The Fillmore

2. Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive

3. Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More For The Road

4. Kiss - Alive II

5. Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains The Same

The White Album deserved its #1 spot-- you simply cannot find a better double album--

Exile should have been right behind it at #2 -- an incedible release

After that, I would pick London Calling by the Clash---

I would also have picked George Harrison's 'All Things Must Pass' -- I know its a 3- disc release, but really, the 'Apple Jam" 3rd disc was great, but only intended as a bonus and background music-- the meat was on the 1st two discs--

Same with the Clash's 'Sandinista"-- cool cool release-- but everything you needed was on the 1st two discs-- the 3rd disc was the experimental bonus stuff for the fans

I hate it when people express themselves like that - as if they are stating some obvious fact. This is your opinion. I happen to have a totally different opinion. I do like the White Album, but it is not even in my top 20. However, I do not state this as a fact; it is just my opinion.

SO do I... I think the Beatles were a bunch of hacks. None of their albums would be in my Top 1000.

The Stones win on music.

Problem with this - and with so many other 'top' lists - is that they are all based on personal favorites/opinions (obviously).

So conceivable to have on this blog thousands of variations. Can we all just get along?
