Oh man, I cried when I heard this....Phil will be so missed-- he and Don were and are fantastic-- their contribution to music cannot be overlooked. Their string of hits and their influence on Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, Keith Richards, Graham Nash, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello and an entire generation was huge. Probably safe to say without the Everlys, maybe no Beatles, Stones, Hollies or British Invasion ? I know all these bands had lots of other influences like Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Muddy Waters, etc but for those harmony groups I think the Everly's were IT.
Was so fortunate to see the Everlys back in the mid 80's when they resurfaced with 'Wings of a Nightengale" and they were soooo good. Had a killer backup band that included Albert Lee, but really didn't need them-- their harmonies carried the night. Rest in Peace, Phil and thank you so much for the great music.

I saw The Everly Brothers as special guest of the Simon & Garfunkel reunion tour in 2004. They were pretty good.

Well, that happy new year lasted about 72 hours...rest in peace, Phil. I was blessed to see them on the pier in NYC thirty years ago with a great band, including Albert Lee -- they were sterling. My sympathy to Don and the whole family.

RIP Phil Everly

I saw them on that tour, too. It was their last hurrah, really. Only four songs, but they sounded great, and seeing all four members of rock's two greatest duos onstage at the same time was a pretty amazing thing.

Anyone catch one of their later albums "Two Yanks in England" ? Recorded in England Circa 1966 with the Hollies, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones as backup ?
Worth checking out

According to Wikipedia Phil Everly was one of the pallbearers at Buddy Holly's funeral. Phil's brother Don was reportedly too broke up to attend. Buddy Holly & the Crickets and The Everly Brothers toured together extensively in 1957 and 1958. Supposedly it was this association that changed the Crickets from wearing Levis and T-shirts to the Ivy League suits the brothers wore.

Saw them live circa 1986: they were great.

I also loved their appearance on a documentary on Irish music, Bringing It All Back Home.

The Everlys were only a couple years older than the rock legends who idolized them. Very different from the way things are now. Think about it. Is there anyone roughly the same age as you that you're in awe of?

Yeah, plenty - Valerie June, Jack White, John Spencer, etc etc - there's lot of great music made these days by rather young guys and girls !!

While the Beatles ..Hollies ...Crosby Stills Nash and
others were all being inspired by the Everly's harmonising
vocal work Keith was in there listening to Don & Phil's guitar work esp Don's .....

"I loved my brother very much. I always thought I'd be the one to go first. I was listening to one of my favorite songs that Phil wrote and had an extreme emotional moment just before I got the news of his passing. I took that as a special spiritual message from Phil saying good-bye. Our love was and will always be deeper than any earthly differences we might have had. The world might be mourning an Everly Brother, but I'm mourning my brother Phil Everly. My wife Adela and I are touched by all the tributes we're seeing for Phil and we thank you for allowing us to grieve in private at this incredibly difficult time."

Just sitting here with a nice whiskey in hand listening to those killer harmonies-- what a great catalog of music. The sun is setting here in Maine and we've had a ton of snow and looking out the window listening to the Everly's as the day winds down is magical.....

One of my formative musical memories is of my father playing Wake Up Little Susie on guitar. Thank you for the music, Phil Everly.

They were influential even on British groups not known for their harmonizing. One of their later songs--1965's Man With Money--was covered by The Who the following year.
