Crossroads Guitar Festival Marathon

I watched this on New Year's Day...over and over again. Thought it was awesome. I was especially impressed with Derek Trucks and his wife Susan Tesdechi (?). He's the coolest guitarist and she's got the greatest voice. I've never heard of them before. I guess they have their own band. Don't know too much about them, but if you can suggest some cd's, etc.. Also, loved Sonny Landreth...think that was his name. And that girl bassist with Jeff Beck. At very first glance I thought she was Miley Cyrus..well, at least her face looks sort of like hers. She's absolutely incredible!! I think I've been living under a rock.smiling smiley

Derek Trucks joined The Allman Brothers Band in 1999 and formed the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010 with his wife Susan Tedeschi.

Old news bellajane. Her name is Tal Wilkenfeld from Australia. I don't even know if she plays with Beck anymore. Tedeshi's voice sounds alot like Bonnie Raitt on record but not as raspy. You can buy any of their CD's. They are all good.

Derek Trucks played with Clapton for awhile too. I saw Susan Tedeschi open for the Stones in LV once. Forget which tour. Licks or more probably ABB. I think Tal Wilkenfeld has moved on but you can never tell with Beck. Recommend strongly the Live @ Ronnie Scott's dvd. Beck has another lady bass player now. Her name is eluding me but she used to play with Prince. She too is fantastic.

Tal WilkenFeld is so great to watch. Because she plays with her eyes glued on J Beck. They play to each other. Love that. Often she gets a very concentrated, almost mean look on her face. Who would have ever thought that the be assist who could keep up with beck would be this pretty girl.
Rhonda Smith is on bass with him now.
I also loved Susan Tedeschi singing "Midnight in Harlem" ; beautiful song; with a beautiful guitar solo.
Albert Lee came out one time and tore it up.
But who consistently was on fire, and who is just getting better and better is John Mayer. There is a tendency to downplay him, because he is not a black man of advanced age, but that is nonsense. Mayer did "Gravity" in one of the shows that blew the place up.

John Mayer sure over does the guitar player faces though. Like everything he plays is just the most impressive thing ever. I prefer Gary Clark Jr. by far.

Which CGF did you see, 2013 in MSG ? All these people (Tedeschi, Trucks, Wilkenfeld) were participants also in 2010 (and some in 2007).

A fantastic series - maybe we'll see a CGF 2016 ...

Utube Doyle Bramhall II doing "Hear my Train a Comin'" 12 string acoustic solo.....Hendrix style. Dude is the real deal. Pity that one didn't make the release.

Agreed.....some? I feel like he's an 80%er. During She's Alright with Doyle.......he's..... weak. His first solo, weak, later, Doyle tried to get him to "call and response" with him......fail. Hell, Doyle turned it around to follow him. During the intro, Doyle turns, plays the riff in a very, "this is how it goes" manner...... it's not a difficult song. Best Stones guest by far, but sorry Gary, stock down.

I'm assuming that they still raise money for the rehab center, with these festivals? If so, that is nice to hear.

On a recent train ride, I listened to EC's bio. He seems like an ok guy. I kind of see him in a different light now. I'll have to listen to some of his records.

Yes,it was great to watch all those of New Years Day.
In 2006, I saw EC at Royal Albert Hall, and both Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall were a part of his band that evening. Both brilliant guitarists. I could listen to Midnight in Harlem over and over.

Find the Red White & Blues @ the White House special on the PBS website. Gary holds his own on the same stage as Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck & Mick Jagger. He also has some stellar performances on Letterman.

Yeah I also mentioned that song earlier. The opening line just gets me every time "Well I came to the city.." Don't know why I find that so sad.
I didn't know that one of their BU singers wrote the song.

I spent hours watching this also and DVRed some that I haven't got to yet. Crossroads seems like the best concert to attend because so many great players attend and you never know who is going to join who onstage. Some brilliant playing and it's nice to see many of the reactions from the artists who watch from side stage. The shows they broadcast were longer than the DVD releases also so you got to see more than 1 song in most cases.

I like Gary Clark Jr, but he doesn't blow me away. I agree about Mayer..Its cool to dismiss him, I guess, but he has a beautiful touch, very Taylor-esque..more than CLapton-esque.
As for those commenting on the 'faces'..that's a half-ass, lazy take...and have you ever watched Mick Jagger's faces while he's singing?
Mayer is a much more creative musician, but CLark is the guy under the radar, and he's black, not a white guy from Connecticut...so that makes him more appealing to some.
Derek Trucks is a great slide player....beautiful sense of melody. Mayer says he makes his guitar sound like a black female singer.

Have you listened to Gary Clark Jr's cd? It is very diverse. I like some of Mayer's stuff. He does have some really lame pop material though. & I like plenty of pop stuff.

Yes, Mayer's earlier stuff is lame. It took a while for me to accept him. It wasn't even that I disliked him at first; he just didn't exist for me at all. Just some WASP pop-boy. But then...whatever happened to him must have been genuine. Or it was always there, and he was just dong some lame-o milk toast pop for fun, whatever. Once he started laying into the Blues he has gotten really good. Not just the playing, but the writing, arranging, the presence. I see some Stevie Ray in him.

<<Susan Tesdechi (?). if you can suggest some cd's>>

You might like this Susan Tedeschi CD (Hope and Desire) from 2005.

It has a pretty inspired Stones cover....

And here's a live version with Derek Trucks from 2006:

They are both very good, of course, but it comes down to aquired tase. IMO, the difference is mainly within Clarke playing like every note matters. His tone is superior to Mayer's, methinks.
