I watched this on New Year's Day...over and over again. Thought it was awesome. I was especially impressed with Derek Trucks and his wife Susan Tesdechi (?). He's the coolest guitarist and she's got the greatest voice. I've never heard of them before. I guess they have their own band. Don't know too much about them, but if you can suggest some cd's, etc.. Also, loved Sonny Landreth...think that was his name. And that girl bassist with Jeff Beck. At very first glance I thought she was Miley Cyrus..well, at least her face looks sort of like hers. She's absolutely incredible!! I think I've been living under a rock.

Tal WilkenFeld is so great to watch. Because she plays with her eyes glued on J Beck. They play to each other. Love that. Often she gets a very concentrated, almost mean look on her face. Who would have ever thought that the be assist who could keep up with beck would be this pretty girl.
Rhonda Smith is on bass with him now.
I also loved Susan Tedeschi singing "Midnight in Harlem" ; beautiful song; with a beautiful guitar solo.
Albert Lee came out one time and tore it up.
But who consistently was on fire, and who is just getting better and better is John Mayer. There is a tendency to downplay him, because he is not a black man of advanced age, but that is nonsense. Mayer did "Gravity" in one of the shows that blew the place up.

John Mayer sure over does the guitar player faces though. Like everything he plays is just the most impressive thing ever. I prefer Gary Clark Jr. by far.

There is one guy who I have no time for: Gary Clark Jr. I have not seen him beyond mediocrity yet.
Yeah I also mentioned that song earlier. The opening line just gets me every time "Well I came to the city.." Don't know why I find that so sad.Quote

Yes,it was great to watch all those of New Years Day.
In 2006, I saw EC at Royal Albert Hall, and both Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall were a part of his band that evening. Both brilliant guitarists. I could listen to Midnight in Harlem over and over.

I like Gary Clark Jr, but he doesn't blow me away. I agree about Mayer..Its cool to dismiss him, I guess, but he has a beautiful touch, very Taylor-esque..more than CLapton-esque.
As for those commenting on the 'faces'..that's a half-ass, lazy take...and have you ever watched Mick Jagger's faces while he's singing?
Mayer is a much more creative musician, but CLark is the guy under the radar, and he's black, not a white guy from Connecticut...so that makes him more appealing to some.
Derek Trucks is a great slide player....beautiful sense of melody. Mayer says he makes his guitar sound like a black female singer.
Yes, Mayer's earlier stuff is lame. It took a while for me to accept him. It wasn't even that I disliked him at first; he just didn't exist for me at all. Just some WASP pop-boy. But then...whatever happened to him must have been genuine. Or it was always there, and he was just dong some lame-o milk toast pop for fun, whatever. Once he started laying into the Blues he has gotten really good. Not just the playing, but the writing, arranging, the presence. I see some Stevie Ray in him.Quote

Have you listened to Gary Clark Jr's cd? It is very diverse. I like some of Mayer's stuff. He does have some really lame pop material though. & I like plenty of pop stuff.

They are both very good, of course, but it comes down to aquired tase. IMO, the difference is mainly within Clarke playing like every note matters. His tone is superior to Mayer's, methinks.
