Album Titles: Do we know who comes up with them?

I haven't the faintest idea which of the Stones writes their album titles. I vaguely recall Charlie came up with "Between the Buttons" and Keith came up with "Goats Head Soup" but my memory from back then is a little smokey....winking smiley

I heard a Keith interview where he said...."when they were recording Voodoo lounge, there was a cat hanging round the studio called Voodoo, he was always lounging around........so........the studio became known as Voodoo's Lounge and so on......

I heard Bridges was Keith saying the world is Bablyon and the album was his bridge to it, but I have always wondered where steel wheels came from. Probably a safe bet mostly Jagger.

Not sure which Stone or other other person came up with Their Satanic Majesty's Request, but it's a play on 'Her Britannic Majesty's Secretary Of State Requests...' which is printed on the inside of all British Passports. Even the font is the same. Their best title, in my opinion.

Not exactly. Andrew told Charlie to draw the title between the buttons (of his coat in the photo), and Charlie thought the title was "between the buttons".

Sticky Fingers came from Guy Stevens, who was going to use it for Mott The Hoople's second album. It was either given to Mick 'N Keith or nicked by them depending on who's telling the story. Then Mott toook the title Mad Shadows for their album from Steve Winwood, who then named the next Traffic album John Barleycorn Must Die.
Either by way of reciprocation or just because they he was in the studio next door recording with the Stones, Mick sang backups on Mott's classic

Walkin With A Mountain

Exile I'm pretty sure is Mick.

Goat's Head Soup comes from a popular dish in Jamaica where the STones recorded the album.

How to cook Goat Head Soup

IORR is from Ronnie, who wrote the song.

Black & Blue- not sure but I'm guessing Mick.

Some Girls & Emotional Rescue from Mick because he wrote those songs.

As for Tattoo You,

"The cover of the album was designed by Peter Corriston, who won a Grammy Award for it. This was just before the arrival of the CD, when album sleeves still meant something, before they became pauperised. The cover is striking for many reasons, not least because it is one of the few to only feature Jagger on the front. Their tattooed faces served to disguise the ageing process, maintaining the idea of Jagger and Richards as priapic rock gods. And just before the album was pressed, Jagger changed the title at the last minute from Tattoo to Tattoo You, causing Richards to publicly fume, claiming he had never been consulted about this."

Got live if you want it is a pun of Slim Harpo's "I Got love if you want it"

Another interesting question would be which was the first album title they came up with on their own? Was it Aftermath?

It's a safe bet that "England's Newest Hitmakers" was from someone outside the band.

In latter years its probably more likely that they'll think of a stage or tour concept and name the album accordingly. Especially as there hasnt been a Stones studio album since Dirty Work (coincidentally (or not) the last album they didnt tour behind) which has a title track.

Then they probably would have gone with One More Shot, had they done an album for the last tour. The critics would have had a field day with an album titled Doom and Gloom.

I think that came from the Loog.

Theiir friend, antique dealer etc etc Christopher Gibbs suggested Beggars Banquet whilst he was helping design and furnish the interior of Mick's home.

(The title) comes from a cat called Christopher Gibbs. Mick laid it on me but it was Christopher who arrived at that mixture. Although we had all been throwing around Tramps' Mushup or something. On the same idea. We wanted to do the picture. That idea came first, the beggars thing came first... Mick was very much into that tattered minstrel bit then.

- Keith Richard 1971

He also helped design and furnish the set for Performance.

I personally breathed a large sigh of relief when I saw that neither of the two new songs on the recent greatest hits album was called 'Grrr!'

Bad enough having the worst album title in history without there being a song of the same name too.

I'd guess Out of Our Heads, though I don't know.

I dunno. I think that one might be ALO as well--I believe he came up with the title based on the album cover photo image, something to suggest a wild and mind-blowing image.

If it isn't Aftermath that was their first idea on their own--and it probably would be after they and ALO parted ways in 1967--then I would have to guess Satanic Majesties.
