Would have been my choice however saw interesting comment by Eric Clapton about who he admires and listens to for inspiration. He without pause said Robert Cray and added he had all the moves.

As BB King is past his prime but still a force to be reckoned with, it has to be Buddy Guy no question. He is a very nice man on top of it!

Not much competition - but I think Tom Waits is greatest living blues man, he's more unique and different, I think he also re-writing what blues is, instead of someone who keeps repeating what's been done million times before. I think in that sense Tom Waits is more important, but yeah Buddy Guy is great..

If the criteria is that you have to still be performing at a high level, I would put Buddy up there. And I can see Taj. The Stones haven't played the blues since 2005's 'Back of My Hand', so we have no idea if they can still pull it off. Eric Clapton couldn't handle the blues after sobriety. And Gary Clark, come on, I'd rather hear John Mayer.

I have to add Jeff Beck to the current greats. He's playing at a much higher level than any of the 60s Brit gunslingers. Lucinda Williams is a great blues singer.

This was certainly one of the greatest collection of blues men and women (febr 2012, new york city); keith had a wonderful appearance, among others: eric clapton, joseph cotton, buddy guy...

I'd say you can't really say who's the greatest; eg, hear ronnie wood playing at the blues fest both 2012 and 2013...

Cheers

The Stones played IGD and C&R on the last tour. + a good load of r&b numbers.

Clarke's sound and feel is in a different (better) league than Mayer's, imo.

<<The Stones haven't played the blues since 2005's 'Back of My Hand', so we have no idea if they can still pull it off.>>

It's in their DNA, always like going home--but they would qualify more as a blues band than a blues man. They've played Champagne and Reefer since then....

<<Van Morrison !!!!>>

Van is more blue-eyed soul with a strong folk connection (see his 1988 album with the Chieftains), and in later years has morphed into traditional big-band jazz arrangements--however he did collaborate with John Lee Hooker.

And he did do an amiable version of Lonely Avenue on one of his early 90s albums. This version is from a 2012 concert in Belfast.

I'd like to give a nod to Eric Burdon, merely because he has not been mentioned here.

Really? That's cool? It sounds like a homeless guy throwing up on the microphone to me.

Yes, it was correctly identified as cool. Though I am now intrigued by the question of whether a homeless guy throwing up sounds different to, say, a duke throwing up. Hmm . . .

I agree with all the kudos going to Buddy Guy. He's playing less these days, though, letting the other guitarist in his band (sorry I can't remember his name) take a lot of solos. In a way that's good because 1. he's pacing himself so hopefully he'll keep going for a long time yet, and 2. the other guitarist is actually really good, though obviously not in the same league.

What's wrong with that ? This is the real deal - the blues.

When it comes to blues - I would rather have homeless guy throwing up on the microphone, then listen to some rich yuppie millionaire pretending to be lonely and poor - like Jagger - I think Tom Waits is much better blues singer than Jagger - when in fact Jagger has never had to do any hard work in his entire life...and you can hear that too - I think Tom Waits has authentic voice to sing the blues. He sounds like he knows what he is singing about - he sounds like a homeless person - he sounds like someone who lost his woman, job, life and all he got left is the blues..that's Tom Waits. Just like late Howling Wolf. He sounds like a real deal to me. I dont wanna hear rich polished sterile sounding recordings for a yuppie crowd...nope. I like Tom Waits better.

To me -blues is all about sadness and life long experience and hard luck stories..and not about say .. that pretentious Eric Clapton playing clean and sterile radio friendly cover songs for posh yuppie crowd.

Someone like Eric Clapton doenst even know how to play the blues - he doesnt know anything about the blues.
