OT: Plagiarism in R'n'R
Posted by: Roadster32 ()
Date: December 28, 2013 13:58

Of course we all know about the "My sweet Lord" thing, but I guess only few know where the famous Chuck Berry intros came from.
This was published in 1946, 10 years before Chucks rise began.

Any other examples?

Led Zeppelin is always a good starting point.

It's also not hard to figure out where the first line of "Something" came from ....

Any band that has ever existed is a good starting point.

The word 'plagiarism' is misused terribly in the rock-world, it seems.

I'm not even sure if an an act or artist borrowing the odd melody or riff, bothers me at all, truthfully. Zeppelin, Oasis... they all did it to varying degrees. Whoop-de-@#$%&'-do.

I think people just wanna protect their favourite bands, I've seen people get angry the moment when somebody says that Zeppelin didnt write their songs, they stole lyrics, riffs, everything..and it's true. Having said that - I love Zeppelin - great musicians yes, songwriters - no. There was never a songwriter in that band

"Satisfaction" got nicked by Neil Young with "Mr Soul".
Karma at work : Young's "Helpless" got nicked by B. Dylan with "Heaven's Door"...

From the expanded 2000 edition of LENNON REMEMBERS (bit not in the original edition):

LENNON: "...I ended up writing COME TOGETHER...And they're suing me because it's like YOU CAN'T CATCH ME, for the first half a line or something, because Chuck Berry's words went something like that. But anyway, it's not him that's suing me, it's his people. So you have to not put that in because they'll say, `Oh there, he admitted it.' And I think it's a compliment to Chuck Berry...[laughs]—I mean we resurrected him." p.90

The Satisfaction riff is in itself a steal.

How many times for this "discussion"? Especially the Zeppelin part? I don't understand why folks always think, or pretend to think, that it's new territory.

I posted this a couple days ago in the Lou Reed thread because it's something I just found out about. Lou Reed was definitely a fan of The Bobby Fuller Four, a U.S. act best known for their 1966 hit I Fought The Law, and he used the guitar riff from a song of theirs, Only When I Dream, as the basis for his song Vicious. It's pretty obvious, but rather than "plagiarism" I think it just honors the influence of one of his favorite bands. Nothing wrong with that, is there? The songs are, otherwise, completely different.

Are you saying this thread is plagiarizing earlier threads?

now that's a long list of stolen riffs, lyrics, melodies, etc..but no point in making another zeppelin thread..this issue has already been well covered on this site..All music is inspired by something but when you steal lyrics, riffs, etc and entire songs like in the case of Dazed And Confuzed - you cant call yourself a songwriter - you're a thief. And that's the case of Zeppelin - the greatest cover band in the history of rock n roll.

When I first heard VICIOUS I thought Lou Reed was plagiarizing himself...the guitar backing in SWEET JANE. I later heard Reed say as much. Incidentally, Andy Warhol said to Reed, "Why don't you write a song called VICIOUS?" Reed said, "What kind of vicious?" Warhol: "Vicious, I hit you with a flower."

My favorite in this category is "Borrowed Tune" by Neil Young. If you've never heard it see if you can name the tune he borrowed and who he borrowed it from before the song is over. Sorry I don't know how to post youtube videos, but I'm pretty sure they'd have it.

and your poet friend, he didn't pinch the line 'some people like to rock, some people like too roll'?

Re: OT - Another MASSIVE song rip off

he may have - but that's a lot more generic than a chorus/melody that goes
I belong to the ____ generation!
and
i can take it or leave it each time
