At the Hyde Park gig I was actually very impressed by his skillful guitar playing. Came across a bit arrogant though, but quite a musician.

Which is not necessarily a good thing! Spice Girls?! Stone Roses! Take That!!! (they should have been called "Take That Back"!!! - hahahah), etc.

Nothing wrong with any of those acts you've mentioned, there. I thought the Spice Girls were great when I was 12. Take That made an admirable comeback and have proven to be very successful. The Stone Roses released an era-defining album and are still hugely influential.

One Direction don't record the kind of music I choose to listen to, but I wouldn't knock them. They sell millions and are adored by 10 year-old girls the world over. Don't think 'Bugg' will ever achieve that. The article gets it right, basically. Jake Bugg is the phony.

We are being too harsh of course, he's a kid in a brutal industry getting caught up in the whole "authentic" marketing angle, but he might get better and wiser with age and so might Mr Styles.

Wasn't he supposed to open Hyde Park but got sick? I could be thinking of someone else.

Tom Odell got sick.
We were treated with an extra concert of the legendary Hudson Taylor.

Jake Bugg will go down in the books as a one hit wonder.
He just hasn't got the voice and delivery to keep it interesting.

During the long wait in the sun in Hyde Park , if I am not confusing things, I seem to remember that I was pleasantly surprised by the concert from the stand-in(s) to that act that had been hit by sickness. On which Saturday? Well functionning as a musically warm up act to me. "The legendary Hudson Taylor" you call him, BowieStone, I must admit that I have not got any knowledge.

They were very enthusiastic. And they did entertain the entire crowd they played for in a tent earlier that day (2nd saturday). I saw quite a few acts on those 2 saturdays, but I remember them the most (besides Valerie June... I'm a fan).
So yeah, I take that remark back.

I enjoyed the stand-ins for the cat who got sick too.
And that band that I think was the first on the big stage on the 13th shook my tailfeather.
Jake Bugg just made me wonder what he had to be so sullen about.

He did get eaten by the sharks of the industry for his second album...if you read the liner notes you just can see these sharpened industry men surrounding him and telling him that it all is a sure hit if he only signs on the dotted line...

His first album is very good, his second album is alright. I need to hear it some more, but its growing on me.

Listen: the kid is 19 years old. He got some good press last year and the business tried to gobble him up. He worked with Rick Rubin on his second album, who is known to try to give the artist their best. Doesn't seem like he's being too used in any way, and he's also not asking for this press. His music is different than most of the new stuff so they're singling him out. Also, I don't know exactly what he's said about some of the other people these days, but again, he's 19. You don't need to take it that seriously. If he is the same age as the one direction guy, compared to Harry Styles he seems like he's 30 while Harry is 15. He may not write his own songs, but I do believe he has a lot of input and serious musical potential that 1 Direction does not.

I'm not saying the guy is the next Dylan or anything. But he's good, and I have a lot of trouble finding music I actually really like these days. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and see where he goes. Could go nowhere, could be the next huge thing. Based on what I've heard, I'm rooting for him. What he does right now can't be the easiest, especially at that young of an age.

I think this is common to many people on this board. And once someone new appears with a sound that reminds the old glories, a young Keith, a dylanesque sound, whatever, the emotions jump around here.

I guess we're preparing to the days the stones won't be around and we'll need someone one fresh and new to follow and discover and enjoy. Not this kid, Me thinks.

He's great, but especially on a Stones site does anyone else think he looks exactly like a young Keith?!

Keith circa 1965?

Nope. More like Jeff Beck in the 60s! ;-)

I quite like the guy in small doses I can't seem to like him enough to actually buy the CD I saw it for £5 in the local supermarket but was not tempted to buy it .
I know a lot of my friends like him but I am happy to hear the occasional tune one the radio now and again.
As for the others mentioned in this thread,
Spice Girls never saw what all the fuss was about, but I have to admire them for making so much money out of what little tallent they actually had.
Take That are just another manufactured group that also know how to exploit what they have.
Stone Roses I don't get at all nice tunes ok but playing tracks backwards was hardly revolutionary and I do have the album everybody raves about but I never play it and some of my friends play it to death and one even went to loads of their re union gigs here and overseas so there must be something that I am missing ,but I will pass.

Generally speaking, he probably resembles a mid-60's Jeff Beck a little more; but he does look like Keith in the picture I posted. He's still a wannabe throwback, though.

To an extent. However, they didn't ape the imagery, haircuts and clothing fashions of those who were an influence. Bugg's channeling of the past is quite incomparable to Mick and Keith's admiration of Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. Bugg is on the retro-wagon.

He wears indie type clothes mostly, hooded tops, modern " mad for it" jackets etc.

'Mad For It' See? He's channeling Oasis! No, you are right. He dresses in that stereotypical indie, high-street fashion. Pretty easy to pull-off.

What would you suggest he wear? Should he look for styles that couldn't possibly identify him with any previous or current artists? So, it's now about clothes?

"A wannabe throwback"? You mean, Mick Jagger didn't wannabe James Brown and Keith Richards didn't wannabe Chuck Berry?

When you're a young emerging artist, you have to throw yourself back a ways before you can pull your way forward.

Well, Jagger and Richards had little chance of being either James Brown or Chuck Berry, respectively.

Since the mid-90's in the U.K,, the guitar-scene has been all about 'looking back' and not moving forward. It's all very retro. There's a British act called Ocean Colour Scene. They're brand of music - not dissimilar to others in the 90's - was even dubbed 'dad rock' The Mod movement in the 60's was all about being 'modern' and looking forward. There isn't an equivalent, now.
