Mick Jagger and Keith Richards plaque for Dartford station

A chance encounter on a railway station platform in Kent, without which the Rolling Stones might never have existed, is to be marked with a plaque.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had their first proper meeting at Dartford station on 17 October 1961.

The teenagers recognised each other as they had both gone to Wentworth Primary School in the town, with Jagger then going on to study at Dartford Grammar.

Dartford council leader Jeremy Kite said the town was proud of the link.

The two musicians met on platform two - Richards was on his way to Sidcup Art College, carrying his hollow-bodied Höfner cutaway electric guitar, while Jagger was travelling to the London School of Economics and holding some of his prized blues records.

"Fate was sealed and they started talking about playing their music together," Mr Kite said.

"They went off and recruited Brian Jones next, and the rest is history," he added.

The Rolling Stones formed in 1962, and went on to become one of the most successful, influential and enduring rock 'n' roll bands in the history of music.

Mr Kite said the heritage blue plaque at the station would remind people of the historic moment.

"They went off and recruited Brian Jones next...." Oh dear. Where's the Department of Historical Accuracy when you need her?

Nice post.

I was wondering from where that "first proper meeting at Dartford station on 17 October 1961" came from, until I found this thread: [www.iorr.org]

Just this afternoon, my British (Kentish) friends and I were discussing how we used to walk around with albums under our arms with the titles showing, to demonstrate how cool we were. Thank goodness Mick wanted to look cool!

I used to do that, but strangely I didn't found the world's premier rock and roll band, could it be because I have no talent??? confused smiley

Brian Jones recruited them, not vice versa. In reality he recruited Jagger only.

Absolutely!

It's a shameful and demeaning mistake to have in an "Official" plaque. I hope that when Brian's children read about this they will protest and get it changed.

I doubt if the words about recruiting Brian are going to be on the plaque (those things aren't very big). It's just a verbal mistake by the man from Dartford Council.

I've found Cllr Kite's email address and emailed him a factual correction. If he bothers to respond, I'll post the reply here.

The encounter of Keith and Mick at the Dartford Station deserves a proper Statue.

Thanks Deltics for this interesting atricle.

I do agree that the statue must show comparisons with Mick and Keith, but this could be done as well in an expressive way. I am in favor of a statue at Dartford Station but getting the finances may be a problem.

Thanks for more nice Dartford Station pics.
My favor is missing, it's the one with a stairway over the rails which I used in my drawings.

No disrespect to the late Brian, but the true genesis of the Rolling Stones can be traced back to Mick and Keith meeting each other on the train platform. It's a very nice gesture on behalf of the town to put up the plaque.

Time waits for no one and one day in the not too distant future it will all be over and gone.

No, it's not the true genesis, but most certainly an important part of The Rolling Stones story.

I disagree. A plaque is more than adequate, I think.

You would have thought this would have been done for the 50th anniversary of the meeting, what with the story having been such a well-known part of Stones lore for so many years.

I wonder if Mick and Keith will be invited to attend the unveiling.

I feel nostalgic for the days when the Stones were part of the counter-culture. (Now it's "Sir Mick" and a public statue/plaque . . )

My preference is a statue of two prominent figures in pop history, but I can understand the choice of a plaque because of the cost. It would be nice to find some Stones related images inside the Station.

There is an etching of Mick on the glass frontage of the station in similar pose to the sculpture in the town's park.
