He was best man for the job the moment he started singing backing vocals.

For me the disappearance of Keith as a reliable(ish) full time backing vocalist is perhaps the greatest crime/shame of the "Vegas Era". Its never mentioned but much like The Beatles a large part of the magic of their sound is that harmony vocal sound which is on all their classic records. Whether he just smoked his voice away or just can't be arsed, or (my belief), Mick retired him and employed more reliable alternatives as he just couldn't rely on Keith to give him the back up he needed. Big shame..

There was a book by Jimmy Guterman Greatest Rock & Roll Records (Every Picture Tells A Story is #1) Exile is #3. He says Keith Richards proves he is the greatest backing vocalist in rock n roll history on Exile because he is the only vocalist to sing in several keys at once. Great quote. Captures the essence of what the Exile Keith vocals sound like.

I'd go along with that..

but can he really sing in several keys at once with one larynx? That is impressive..

I like Keith's BU vocal track on his own song, Before they make me Run. I used to think it was Mick doing that falsetto.

In addition to everything mentioned above, Keith's backing vocals are wonderful throughout Black & Blue,
I've Got My Own Album to Do and all the Baby Barbarians and New Barbarians stuff

I personally have a particular fondness for his 81/82 backing vocals,
but he is just plain inimitably wonderful whenever he sings back-up.

It's still there from time to time.

RT is lovely on SSS.

Keith on Exile or IGMOATD with Ronnie are my absolute favourites. Before Ronnie and Keef shot their voices they were great together

Right from the start, Keith has been the best back-up vocalist in The Stones, with a distinct soulful sound--he doesn't necessarily make it as a lead vocalist, but as a background vocalist he lends a song a certain character.

I particularly like his work on the first two albums, which here in the U.S. were England's Newest Hitmakers and 12X5.

From the first album, strong support to Mick's vocals in Can I Get A Witness:

From the second album, If You Need Me is almost a duet as Keith echoes Mick's lyrics throughout:

No that was Ronnie..

I love that "He sang beautifully every second night"

Fat lot of good if you're there on the "first" night...

There's a Youtube Channel where an Italian guy makes an amazing work on Beatles harmony singing. I have been unable to find anything similar about classical Stone songs. It would be great to find the backing singing of Wild horses or Loving cup chorus and so on

The BU vocals on the studio version of Miss You are fantastic, imo.

Ronnie sings there as well.
