Why is it so much colder in Melborne? Do I need to wear my jacket from now on, or will it improve?

It's because we are in the middle of spring and it's always very changeable at this time of year. One day can be 32+ and the next 16 degrees so you need to be equipped for 4 seasons in one day as Crowded House once sang about Melb weather and not the hotel chain!

Those figures are NOT hypotheticals.

It was 31C here Friday 31st October, and 16C here yesterday Saturday 1st November!

I would also strongly recommend a sun hat and long sleeve shirt for Saturday. Even 50+ Sunscreen won't completely protect you for a whole day in the Aussie sun.

Thanks for the weather update. Coming in from Bangkok, so this is very helpful! Seems like I will need some layers and a hat.

Tim Ries and Bernard Fowler are playing Bennetts Lane jazz club on Thursday night.
I wonder if Charlie will show up and play like he did in Perth back in March?

It took me some 24 hours to figure out Melbourne, even if I have been here two times before to see the Stones. Anyway, got my bike for the week this morning, and did some biking. On top of my list these places...

Mick will of course mention the place they performed for the first time back in 1965. Most of these old theatres are taken down unfortunately, but this one is still here.

Palais Theatre at St Kilda just a few km south of Melbourne city. A beautiful classic theatre building, with a capacity of 2,900 people. The Rolling Stones did two shows on Jan 28, 1965, then three shows the day after, and then they returned from their New Zealand shows to do two more shows on Feb 10.

Kooyong Tennis Courts - Two shows on 18-Feb 1973, at this 8,500 capacity outdoor venue. Just a few km outside the Melbourne city center...

Melbourne Cricket Ground - Two shows on March 27 and 28, 1995. And if you turn around from looking at this venue, located at the Olympic Park complex, you will see the one further down...

Rod Laver Arena. They were moving in the stage this morning. The trucks had just arrived from Perth. The Stones have been performing at this venue during the past two tours, with three shows in 2003 and one show in 2006. And tomorrow they will be back!

PS. I am not an expert on Melbourne. I have been her for some 24 hours now. Please post any additions and corrections. Welcome The Rolling Stones!

I believe they played the Palais again in 1966 as well?
One of the tours was with Roy Orbison.
Bob Dylan did 4 nights there this August - outstanding. But it needs millions of dollars of repairs and nobody knows where the money will come from.

Also Jagger played at Rod Laver Arena (then called the National Tennis Centre) in 1988 and a secret show down the road at the Corner Hotel in Richmond. Joe Satriani was on guitar.

Thanks for the 1996 and 1988 info. Sure they did six shows in 1966 too:

24 February 1966: St Kilda – Palais Theatre (2 shows)
25 February 1966: St Kilda – Palais Theatre (2 shows)
26 February 1966: St Kilda – Palais Theatre (2 shows)

And it seems they have been more popular in Melbourne than in Sydney, just by the number of shows...

Have to get to that Jagger secret show place tomorrow, Corner Hotel in Richmond, before the real Stones show!

Strage cloud formations yesterday somewhere over Australia.
Kind of shaping up like the Stones tongue logo.
Enjoy the show and keep the reports coming.

Correct Jammingedward; Jagger played in October 1988. Corner Hotel is a great rock'roll venue in Swan St Richmond about a 10 minute walk east from Rod Laver.

Love your work BV it makes me proud to see all those great venues that the Stones have played in my great city and hopefully will continue to play in years to come!

You might not be able to get into the room where the bands play at the Corner Hotel, unless it's the end of the night. But you will be able to check out the front bar.

Jaggers gig at The National Tennis Centre was broadcast on TV - I remember watching it as a child. There is also footage of his Corner Hotel show floating around on YouTube.

And yes, Melbourne loves the Stones! The crowded are always wilder and more enthusiastic than the other cities!
