If You Really Want to be my Friend

I am trying to figure out the instrument on this track, whether it's a keyboard or a guitar....at times I am certain it's a guitar and then other times I figure it's a keyboard...

If it's a guitar, what are/is the effect on the guitar that they are using?

Specifically the instrument that comes in at the break 0:50 seconds...and also at 1:51-2:01 and continues during the song...

Thanks

Paul

It sounds like a bit of fuzz tone on Taylor's guitar, which enters the song gradually, first in the 1- to 2-minute interval, then again in the 3- to 4-minute interval, before he switches it off for his soaring (clean) solo toward the 4-minute mark.

I like the way Taylor's guitar comes in gradually--and occasionally--at first, until it decorates the rest of the song with tasty licks as a steady, reverb presence behind the vocals after that first solo ends at the 4-minute mark.

But yeah, that "growling" effect you hear as an undercurrent a couple of times before that first Taylor solo sounds like he switched on a fuzz tone.

Paul, I think you're referring to the electric guitar thru the 'rotating' Leslie speaker cab.

Maybe one of those guitar synthesizer things.

The first thing is Keith, playing through a Leslie.

The second thing (the dark sounds round 1:50) sounds like Taylor is playing through an octave box, like he did on the bridge in If You Can't Rock Me as well.

I was listening to this song all through this week, and how I love it!!
Jagger sing soulful lines, Nicky as always shining all the way, and Charlie's ride cymbal sounds like a rain of stars, if you let me use this words haha.
One of the best soundings songs on IORR!
Love that sequence of great songs: Winter, Coming down again, Angie, If you really want to be my friend, Till the next goodbye, Trough the lonely nights.

Note: all this songs include amazing playing from Taylor and specially Hopkins. Did anybody realize that "Time waits for no one" seems to be a "farewell" song for both musicians? Maybe the best Taylor and one of the few Hopkins' solos in a Stones' song.

<all this songs include amazing playing from Taylor and Hopkins.>

And Keith. It is Keith's guitar that is the most prominent one on Angie, and Taylor only plays bass on Coming Down Again + the slide and one of the acoustics on Till The Next Goodbye.

But I agree that Taylor plays great on some of these songs thumbs up

Nicky played on the ER album later.

Yes he did, but you cannot match Indian girl against Angie. I mean, a "farewell" to the golden years. Their best lineup:

Jagger
Richards
Taylor
Wyman
Hopkins
Watts

I know Nicky wasn't an official member. But I (and maybe many more people) just can't figure BB, LIB, EOMS, GHS, IORR and Stones Tuoring Party without Nicky.
He was not a "backup musician", he was as prominent as Taylor during the 68-74 years. He leave the stage in 1973 for health issues, then Preston join in.

Some people like Indian Girl more than Angie - just as some people like the Brian era or the Pathe Marconi era better than 1973-74...

But Nicky was wonderful, a wizard with the keys indeed thumbs up

Nicky was great, Billy was too, but now they have someone on keyboards who is a symbol of the nowadays Rolling Stones ...

I love that sequence of songs too. Really hit a peak of ballad writing about that time. I'd also continue the list with "Memory Motel", "Fool To Cry", and "Worried About You".

Let It Loose deserves a mention as well, even if Taylor didn't play on it. Did Billy or Nicky play on it? Nicky?

If You Really Want To Be My Friend is a nice track, I do think Nicky on piano. The Stones shine even more on the track;" Time Waits for no One ".

Couldn't agree with you more dandelion 1967 those are to me some of the best tunes the bands done which is saying quite a bit. Great sounding guitars as well as Nicky's fine work throughout made for a great lp in my opinion and I couldn't understand the critics back after it was first released. The Stones sound tired? Sounded damn fine to me and I've always loved the slow stuff. The Chuck tunes are great too but how many of em do you need, right?

Nicky of course.

It was speculated that Keith knicked the chord progression from something Billy played, that's why I asked. And Billy plays on Exile...

I do think that Nicky and Dr John both are involved in this beautiful track "Let It Loose" from Exile.
