O/T Peter Wolf

Saw Peter Wolf perform last night in a very small club here in Maine and it was fantastic-- it was just Wolf and two guitarists who alternated between acoustics and electric guitars, mandolins and lap steel guitars, and also joined by another playing stand up bass. I have been fortunate to see Wolf quite a bit over the last few years, but this was incredible. No drums or keyboards, he played a set of blues and country that was just superb.
You haven't lived until you hear him do J Geils 'Love Stinks" as a bluegrass number ! Great stories about recording with Jagger as well.
If you ever get a chance to see him don hesitate ! He rocked the place last night-- a total pro !

J Geils Band big shot at the big time was when they toured extensivly with the Rolling Stones in 1982. J Geils w Peter Wolfe as the front man were huge and really put on a spectacular show. But.....

Right after this tour the squabbling began and they broke up. After their big hit "Cover Girl" I spoke briefly with PW back then and he only had good things to say about working with the Stones and that he got along well with Mick Jagger

Right you are, MILKYWAY! The Birchmere is one of my favorite concert venues, been there many times over the years. Food, drinks, and good music...what more could you ask for?

Not a thing! The Birchmere would have been a great place to see Peter Wolfe. I was living in Arlington, VA when both John Mayall & Peter Frampton appeared at the Birchmere. Living in NJ now.

Did Peter Wolfe play Centerfold and/or Freeze Frame?

The venue that Wolf played last night here in Maine was the Stone Mountain Arts Center, an old converted barn that holds about 200 people and is a really wonderful place for musicians to play-- its located in tiny Brownfield Maine, which is in the middle of nowhere-- a beautiful place located in a beautiful place
The J Geils tunes he covered last night were "Love Stinks" ( bluegrass style),
'Looking for a Love", 'Musta Got Lost", and 'Give it to Me"-- he played a lot from his last two solo albums which was great, as well as a number of old country tunes, blues tunes and a couple rockabilly--
fantastic stuff

Decent food, drinks, great music, plus they start on time, end at a civilized hour, and they strongly encourage people to keep quiet during performances!

...and you always have a seat. Wouldn't have thought when I was much younger that someday I would be extolling the virtues of a "civilized" concert. Maybe we can all meet there someday and find a nice table...grinning smiley

Peter has really matured as an artist. I originally thought he left J Geils at his peak in 1982/83 with Centerfold at the top of the charts and filling arenas in the US.

But his last couple of solo albums have been superb, and his live shows, generally in smaller clubs, amazing.

Hope he makes it back to Buffalo soon. I see he is playing an intimate venue in NYC at the end of the month, City Winery.

I am in also. I have never been to the venue but his shows are always great. He is also playing at the City Winery the next two nights in Chicago.

Funny. I was responding to the thread because I saw him in NY at the City Winery and I thought the show was outstanding! I don't know anything about the guy other than the fact that he was in the J Geils Band (who I know but I've just never listened to that much). I know Musta Got Lost and Centerfold, etc. I went because I'd never been to the City Winery before and knew he has a great live reputation. He was excellent. Played for 2 hours, had the crowd in the palm of his hand, had an excellent band. Could not reccommend it enough. And this is coming from someone who had no personal investment in the guy before this. Amazing show and his solo albums, which I bought after the show are equally great. The song he does with Mick Jagger on one of them is one of his best songs.

That's why they call it "opinions" Some of show was good; some was quite boring. Have seen him 5-6 times, this was not, to me, one of his better efforts. Glad you enjoyed.

Peter's "Sleepless" is great with Mick and Keith playing each of them playing on a different song. Peter is a lot more mellow now compare to his high energy performsances with J. Geils band. But that record is musically very satisfying ; good songs and great playing. Mature rock and roll, if you know what I mean.
Rock and roll,
