Audio Question
Posted by: Mr.D ()
Date: November 27, 2013 02:33

I just got a copy of Exile On Main Street on Bluray Pure Audio and it comes in three audio formats:
2.0 LPCM Stereo 24/96
2.0 DTS-Master Audio 24/96
2.0 Dolby TrueHD Audio 24/96
Which of the three should sound the best? I have an OOPPO-93 bluray player and a Sony home theater sound system. Thanks for your help!smiling smiley

What type of Sony home theater sound system do you have? Your player can send the signal, it all depends on your receiver and its capabilities combined with your speakers.

LPCM - This is your standard lossless wav file. It will always sound great, no matter what, and will play on every system known to man. Over double the bitrate (44.1 to 96kHz)and a considerable amount of gained depth (16bit to 24bit).

DTS - This USED to be 'the' format to go do. For a long time this was the top format, especially in relation to accurate surround sound mixes. Every single receiver can play Dolby material but many (a while back) could NOT play DTS signals. DTS was an updated lossless codec, although it can also be lossy. If your receiver supports this signal, you are in for a considerable upgrade to the PCM signal.

Dolby TrueHD - Dolby is addicted to new standards/formats. This is their answer to DTS. I would argue that very little will be different between this format and DTS. It is simply a compatibility format. My home receiver (a fantastic Denon unit with Polk speakers) cannot play this format.

In summary... PCM great. DTS and TrueHD, equally good modern formats. If you do an A/B test I am willing to bet that none of us could really tell the difference between DTS and TrueHD... unless the mixing/mastering is different. All three formats are MUCH closer to the studio master than the conventional CD.

Thanks for the imput, I have listened to the DTS and Dolby TrueHD and can't tell much diffrence, but the quality is spectacular! A friend of mine told me to use headphones for the LPCM version so I will try that today.

So chaps - can we settle this once and for all - is the Blue Ray Pure Audio edition of Exile better sounding than all existing CD versions?

Thanks for the heads up, I'll try to find it when it comes out! Have you heard the Japanese SACD releases from last year? I've listened to Sticky Fingers and Beggars Banquet so far, the sound is pristine!smiling smiley

I guess we can conclude once and for all that we´ll get as many opinions on this topic as there are posters winking smiley

The Japanese SACD is the flat transfer, so far that is the closest for me to the original vinyl.

Are we likely to get a disc that sounds better than the original vinyl? I'm pretty happy with the collector's CDs in those big plastic cases that came out about 10 years ago.

I've also heard some bootleg 5.1 mixes of all the albums from Satanic to Exile and they sound great. God knows how they were able to separate the instruments but it makes the albums sound as if you were listening to the actual recording.

No, but maybe a reel tape would - with the right equipment winking smiley

I've received "Every Pictoure Tells A Story-Shm-SACD" today.
It really surprises me.
There are many sounds that I had had no experience before.
Mick Waller and Maggie Bell are rocking. Martin Quittenton's acoustic guitar is so beautiful.
It brings a revolutionary change.hot smiley

By the way, who plays the slide guitar on Amazing Grace?
Ronnie Wood or Sam Mitchell?

I have no reason to doubt that it's Ronnie. Listen to his playing on Jerusalem on Long Player.

Hehe. Reminds me of two quotes.

One from Greg Calbi in Musicians Magazine in 1987:
"Exile On Main Street was probably the most perplexing one of all (Colombia CDs to remaster). The master tape sounded so drastically different from the record that was out on the market. I wouldn't want to insult anybody, but the master tape I had was dreadful.
It was very muddy and there was very little separation between everything. It was obvious that whoever mastered the album did something magical to it, something which I couldn't figure out. I worked for two or three days on it, and I just gave up.
I thought maybe over the years the tape had lost some quality. I couldn't get it to jump out. I did the best I could.Three days after I sent out the final product, they found another tape. It was an equalized tape done when they cut the record. I put it on, and it's phenomenal.
With the help of some people at Columbia, we stopped production on what we had, and went back and actually used the equalized master that was done for [vinyl] disc. It just sounds fantastic."

And then a quote from the NPR Radio-interview with Don Was in June 2010 during the re-release of Exile:
"I helped out on the remastering for Virgin in 1993 or something. If you listen to the mixes of Exile before it was mastered, it is a mess, man. It does not sound like the Exile that we know. Each mix is very different. So somebody mastered it for the original release and gave it some unity to the sound."

So...we know who did what to those tapes back then and how fast Andy did it, but it still is one of those great stories I think, about how that record came together.

And, to conclude with a point in relation to your quote DP Man, maybe listening to the Exile reels really would be a hit or miss winking smiley

I'll have a good night's sleep.

I esteem Rod, Ronnie and the Stones for making a good album at the same year.
