Paying The Cost To Be The Boss
(BB King)

Ocean Way Recording Studios & Cherokee Recording Studios,
Los Angeles, California, US, March - April 1997

Mick Jagger - vocals, harmonica
BB King - vocals, electric guitar
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - electric guitar
Darryl Jones - bass
Tommy Eyre - keyboards
Joe Sublett - tenor saxophone
Darrell Leonard - trumpet

You act like you don't wanna listen when I'm talking to you
You think you ought to do, baby, anything you wanna do
You gotta be crazy, baby
Just got to be out of your mind
As long as I'm paying the bills
I'm paying the cost to be the boss
I'll drink if I wanna and play a little poker too
Don't you say nothing to me as long as I'm taking care of you
As long as I'm working, baby, and paying all the bills
I don't want no mouth from you about the way I'm supposed to live
You gotta be crazy, baby
Just got to be out of your mind
As long as I'm paying the bills
I'm paying the cost to be the boss
Now that you've got me, you act like you're ashamed
You don't act like my baby, you just use my name
But I tell you, I'm going to count my money and I don't want no back talk
If you don't like what I'm doing, baby, pick up your things and walk
You gotta be crazy, baby
Just got to be out of your mind
As long as I'm paying the bills
I'm paying the cost to be the boss

Produced by John Porter

First released on:
BB King - “Deuces Wild” CD
(MCA Records MCD 11722) UK, November 3, 1997

Wouldn't even have known about this without this thread--much obliged to the OP for this Track Talk series.

Is it my imagination or does Mick play the harp like Sugar Blue in Miss You?

There's also a Jeff Beck version with B.B. King from 2003.

It's on Deuces Wild, and is an absolute corker.

A great wedding song if ever I heard one!

Mick should have sung another verse.

Seems not to cause much thrill here...

Anyway, here is the cut if someone has not yet heard it:

Technically it is not a Rolling Stones cut, but a BB King number supported by The Rolling Stones, from King's DEUCES WILD duet-album from 1997. The Stones were in the town making BRIDGES TO BABYLON around the time.

I guess there is nothing much to remember about it; it is both by maestro BB and his 'backing band' rather 'blues-by-numbers' sort of performance they would do while sleeping, but, of course, it always nice to hear such blues masters - especially together - at work any time. The Stones are supporting King with a respect, and not much making noise of themselves. I dig that.

What there is left to say? Well, just listen and enjoy...thumbs up

I think it's a nice tune, but Mick isn't particularly strong here, imo.

Yeah, but I think that's partly for respect. He doesn't want to make much fuss about himself, like none of them. At least, that's the way I interpret that rather low profile performance. But then again, I think he actually sounds better here when trying a bit holding his horses down than what he does, for example, in more recent "Watching The River Flow" in where he overdoes his Jagger cliches.. or to think of those SuperHeavy contributions...

Really? I think he's doing that shivering, campy thing again. It worked very well on FF and TWFNO, but not so good in 1997, imo.
