introduction

Brian Jones was the first martyr of rock and roll. Before Jimi. Before Janis. Before Jim. His life was the first of many rock and roll mini sagas that would replay themselves over and over throughout the latter part of the sixties and well into the seventies; all different, yet all frighteningly and eerily similar in their downfalls.
Brian Jones entered the 60s young, ambitious, energetic and hungry about the future of his new band built around his newest obsession, the blues. He went about it with fervor, leading the band and in the beginning being responsible for much of the Rolling Stones' musical experimentation with different sounds and instruments. In the beginning, it was Brian who used his charm to push the band's name around London when many were unsure of what The Rolling Stones and R&B were all about. The Brian Jones that exited the late 60s however, was a frail, unhealthy and ultimately sad shell of what he used to be.
Brian Jones' legend has, as with all young R&R martyrs, grown and his excesses have been chronicled extensively over the years. In the end, the question remains not so much if he was murdered but what other incredible contributions could or would he have made to music had his life not ended so tragically.

Synopsis

Artist, popstar, fashion icon, womanizer and counter culture groundbreaker- Brian Jones was all these things and more. During the seven short years of his glittering rise to stardom and fateful plummet between 1962-1969 he became a music legend- creating the greatest rock and roll band ever, which he later treated with ill-disguised disdain.

Having reinvented the Blues, he turned his back on the world of pop and found more pleasure in scoring movies and recording ethnic music in Morocco.

Described as one of the most decadent men of the twentieth century Brian rebelled against everything and when he wasn’t hating the world, he adored it- an aesthete who loved to tease, his consumption of drugs and alcohol were legendarily copious and his temper vicious. His paranoia was becalmed by L.S.D, which led to paranoia. He became the boy who cried wolf.

Brian’s life was a mirror for the swinging sixties- the world was at his feet but he became, like his good friends Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, lost in his own mesmeric stupor. Affecting the attitude of a Greek god, he inspired in equal measure, adoration and apathy, trust and disgust, which led to misplaced emotions, confusion and often betrayal.

This is not the story of the Rolling Stones – after Brian died in 1969 the Stones created their own legend- Mick became more flamboyant, Keith indulged his proclivity for drugs, Bill was a heartbreaker and also left the band eventually and Charlie was the Jazzman and musicologist. But Brian was all of these things in 1963. This is a murder mystery about the death of one of the most talented musicians of the ‘60s who couldn’t or wouldn’t write pop songs. He died at the hand of someone he barely knew on a friendless summer night having cried wolf for the last time.

Monet Mazur is the daughter of Ruby Mazur..... an artist/graphic designer.

Didn't he design the Tumbling Dice sleeve? And allegedly the tongue logo? He certaintly is claiming he did

It's not out until the autumn according to Mojo. I wonder why Woolley changed the name from 'The Wild And Wycked World Of Brian Jones'. He probably thought the name Brian Jones wouldn't mean anything to most people under 25.
Thanks for the info RvO.

Any truth to the story that the film features no Jagger Richards music only covers like Little Red Rooster and Wanna Be Your Man?

Wouldnt be too surprising... Well, who knows about this (see The GR above)?

There was an item in a magazine I read that said songs in the film included Rooster and another 3 or 4 titles I cannot remember but none were J/R songs and you would expect Satis, Ruby etc t oappear. May be they do or has the curse of Klein struck again?

I heard that all of them who own the publishing rights (Klein and Mick&Keith) denyed the use of J/R-songs. Funny way to terrorize the movie, and just lets the question open, why?

One cant stop wondering that the delay of the film may be connected with the legal question on using the songs. Interesting issue to follow. We may lack knowledge about how thew filmmakers have acted against Klein & the Glimmer Twins.

Who plays Mick and Keith?

If it's true that no Jagger/Richards compositions are allowed in the film then this movie will suffer irrecoverable damage. Yet another example of the Stones golden period of music being denied to a younger generation. Who cares if this film potentially potrays Mick & Keith in a bad light, as long as the music has the chance to spark the interest of more potential fans then their legacy continues.

It's about Brian and his legacy, not the stones' legacy. The orig movie title gives you some idea this movie will not be portraying Brian in a most truthful light, nor the truth about his death. It's a fictional movie & just one theory on his death.
We shall see....

You won't have to wait long...most shitty movies hit the video racks as soon as they fail in the theatres. This one sounds like a real loser, and a travesty and an insult to all fans of the Stones, and all movie-goers in general.

How can you base a movie on rumors, innuendo's, and conspiracies, while the main figures (the rest of the Stones) don't approve or even acknowledge it? They aren't even involved in it in any way whatsoever...not even their music!!! I may watch it out of curiosity, just to see how ridiculous and dorkish the star/"actor" ruins and desecrates the sacred image of Brian, but I certainly won't pay to see this disgrace of a film.

Look what Val Kilmer did to Jim Morrison in the "Doors" movie. Horrendous! That was more or less of a spoof, with all the remaining members of the Doors ridiculing it and calling it all a basket full of lies. Expect the same from this movie...complete rubbish.

Well, I suppose they are waiting for the autumn so the Stones tour can boost the success of the film, too.

Freeridin on the movie thats contain no original material... Why not?
Sounds very Mick jagger-ish to me.

Give the film a chance, they haven't even finished editing it yet! The direcor is a talented and well respected producer of 30 or so movies. He has been trying to realise this project for over ten years so it's not just some throwaway piece of exploitation. Wooley's favourite movie is 'Performance' and he has said that this and 'The Servant' are the main influences so it could be a very promising movie. He tends to work on small but quality films of integrity. Paddy Considine who plays Frank Thorogood is another positive sign as he's one of the best actors currently employed. Note that the shirt Leo Gregory is wearing is an exact copy of the one Brian was photographed in shortly before his death which is a minor example of the desire by Woolley to get the details right. 'Stoned' may share the low key but sharp & insightful edge of 'Backbeat' (the Beatles movie he produced). There's no way it will be a ridiculous mess like 'The Doors'.

Re the lack of MJ/KR music:
A) this only seems to be hearsay at this stage
b)it's a low-budget movie so I imagine the makers wouldn't be able to afford Klein's crippling fees
c) It could even be a choice by the director to emphasise Brian's gifts (eg the slide on Little Red Rooster) & not overshadow him with well-known Jagger/Richards classics.

When I write Mick jagger-ish in this context it could mean "greedy", but also "rarely rational".
I definitely will give this film a chance. I read the Anna Wohlin-book with sceptical eyes, but I believe the truth is something in-between her slightly paranoical conspire-seeing theories and the common "nonsense"-reaction to it.
I remember well back in 92 when I saw Oliver Stones´ Doors-movie, which I in fact liked. Naturally I had my doubts, but for me it was not any ridiculous mess or anything like other judgements above. The Shaman issue is of course hard to put on the screen, but he tried, and for me thats half the effort. As one among the hardest Doors-fans (esp. at then) I would be a hard critic.
The only thing I´m afraid of here, is that the film crew wanna make a faultless hero out of ol Brian. The aspect of him being a real pain in the ass for the Stones from 1965 on and off, and in the hottest sense from about 1967 I would like to see on the screen... As well as the new, stronger, new-band-forming Brian that Anna writes about when telling about Brian´s last months.

Baboon Bro, you don't need to worry they will portray Brian as faultless. In fact it's quite the opposite. With their original title "The Wild & Wicked World of Brian Jones, they will bring alot of attention to his negative aspects instead of the positive (hasn't there been too much of that already?). Tom Keylock & Janet Lawson have also acted as a consultant on this movie, so if I'm cynical I have good reason to be. I still would like to see the movie out of curiosity, and I guess if it gets people talking about Brian, or gets people to read up more about him to find out more then that would be the silver lining.

Keylock is painted like the Devil or his cousin by Anna Wohlin.
Hope they touch the Stones true grief over Brian.
Miss U, tou have some good point here; there is always a risk that they
paint the guy too black ("wild and wycked" might as well be "bring on the ca$h"). The most common pitfall when dealing with 60´s stars is otherwise that they make it easy & rough & blame anything on the drugs. Brian was a VERY complex nature: hope this will shine thru in the movie.

Re: More info about Brian Jones movie: STONED

Keylock has been keeping a very close eye on everything to do with Brian including this movie. He has also sold some of Brian's items to stones fans, when those things should rightfully go to Brian's family. So who profited from that? Brian never liked Keylock & vice versa. Personally I believe Keylock may have had some role in the events that led to his death, IMO. But some day the truth will be known. Yes as you say, let's hope his complexity shows in the movie.

Woolley has also done a lot of research into Brian's death. He even hired a private investigator to track down Janet Lawson who the cops told him was "probably dead". He seems to have tried to pool (geddit?) all the known sources who were present & "amalgamated all the disparate threads, as nobody ever agreed with each other on what happened".

I think with the benefit of hindsight - had Brian lived - he would have prefered this flick not come out.

I think he'd realise that the glorification of rock stars - particularly 60s rock stars - and the whole 'wild child' thing has been done to death and is so passe it's a yawn.

He did do some marvellous things in his short life, but let's face it, he died a bloated, drug @#$%& alcholic that was out of work and in danger of going broke, and was a man that had no form of stability and to top it off was in general poor health anyway.

It's only inevitable that the movie would reflect this towards its end. I feel sad enough thinking about Brian and the way it all ended at the best of times. Can't say it would really thrill me to see in being reenacted on film - however embellished.

If given another chance I think he'd have done many things differently.
I'm not bagging the movie - I can't for obvious reasons - but I feel Brian would have rather given it a miss.

On the other hand I'm probably speaking out of my arse.

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

This movie is fiction, not fact, so it will probably portray Brian in his final weeks as monkey man thinks. However the truth is Brian was getting his act together, musically and mentally, and had a more optimistic outlook on his future, wanted to re-establish relationships with his kids. That is why it is so tragic....and he died before his single could come out with his new band.

Sounds nice but I dont think he was getting his act together at all. Alexis Korner says it was good for Brian to belive there would be a life after the Stones. I dont think he would have made it. He died because there was no life after the Stones and he knew it.
