But does it sound better than, say, the CD that came out with the SUPER-DELUXE EXILE ON MAIN ST set that came out a couple years back?

EDITED FOR SPECIFICITY AND SPELLING.

But how does it sound?

I've only listened to the SACD's made from the same source and they sound excellent. My bet is the new SHM-CD's will be the best versions on CD for the concerned Stones albums...

It looks great. Even if there was no big improvement, I would still buy this. Anything "new" from the Stones from the early 1970s is almost an automatic purchase for me.

EDIT: Thank you for posting those photos, Rockman.

It could not possibly sound worse!

You can listen to audio samples in CDJapan web site. Not great audio quality but it might give you an idea of how it sounds...
What I like the most about these new transfers is the sound clarity. You don't get the muffled sound like the 1994 remasters or the squashed sound like the 2009 remasters ...

A part of me is tingly with the thought of Tattoo You in utterly pristine form, and a part of me is like..."oh my gawd, how many times am I going to buy this same music again?".

Had I known there was the longer version of Slave on the '94 Virgin rerelease I would have bought it.

How do they do that and not tell us?

By now I expect a phone call.

Sticky Fingers and Some Girls will be released on October 30, and Black And Blue and Goats Head Soup on November 27.

It will be available at JPC in Germany too, if somebody wants to save shipping costs along with the japanese Editions of 'Sweet Summer Sun' or Exile on Blu-ray Audio.

I want to hear that it is the best version yet to appear on CD. Can someone confirm that before I buy my 4th CD of this album.

Bring on the Bluray! smileys with beer

I'm tired of CD format, I have no use for it as I have no use for my Walkman or my Rubik's Cube thumbs down

They are the best versions on CD if you like flat mastering (no additional EQ, no compression).

So, can we hear any more detail. Is the bass punchier. Do the guitars ring out. Does the mix sound less cluttered and muddy? That's what I'm wanting to hear?

Did I quote the wrong message ? smiling smiley

Yes you can hear more detail, the acoustic guitars sound more natural, there's more depth, more clarity. But, because it's a flat transfer, you may find the sound a bit dry if you're used to the remasters. It's the original recordings sound without any fancy remastering trick on it.

It should be included eventually as it was part of the SHM-SAC reissues. All albums from SF to DW were reissued - including live albums.

I wouldn't care too much about this. SHM-CD's are already supposed to be an improvement over regular CD's. Plus platinum SHM-CD's won't play on older CD player...

I've been thinking of delving into shm-cd's for over a year now and have read dozens of threads on the matter of their quality. Opinions range from total scam to "they sound a bit better" winking smiley...Not one comment convinced me they are worth the money. It seems to boil down to this...they are just over-priced, but nicely packaged sacd's. If an album wasn't previously released in sacd format you're just getting a remastered regular cd. Also, apparently it's the hardware that makes the 'sound' better, not what the cd is made of. They might be collectable some day? Nahh...I'll save my money for original items...

Yes, they were the best... until these "DSD transfers from original master tapes" that are used for the new SHM-CD's.

kowalski san,

I have many CD players. All of them could play them.
plus even PC player and blu-ray player could play them.smiling smiley

To my surprise this Platinum SHM series have good sound quality.
Especially, Stevie Wonder's Talking Book and Dire Straits were big surprise.

Although sounds become juicy and bright on Exile On Main Street, I feel somewhat uncomfortable.confused smiley

Toru-san

I've read on the CDJapan website that platinum CD's can't be read on CD players that can't read CD-R. That's the case of my old CD player (a Technics player from the 90's...).

I think that what makes these new SHM-CD's sound so good is in the first place the sources used, ie original masters left untouched (if we believe the descriptions).

I've noticed on the SACD versions that some Stones titles sound a bit bright. Particularly Sticky Fingers and Exile. But sound clarity is quite amazing.
