At home with Paul McCartney: His most candid interview yet

Photo: Mary McCartney

By Dylan Jones
4 August 2020

In the collective pause of pandemic, introspection finds fresh expression. And for Paul McCartney, who would have headlined Glastonbury this summer, 60 years on the world stage offers much on which to reflect. In this exclusive interview, with incredible images taken from lockdown by daughter Mary, we found him wistful, candid and contented as he recalled all the notes of a miraculous life. How four lads from Liverpool came together to change a great deal more than music. What it felt like to be blamed for the band’s demise. How behind fame, adulation and wealth exists a normality he jealously protects. And why the work of a lifetime is still far, far from finished...

Is Paul a fan of The Everly Brothers? You bet. The pretty rare black/white photo on the wall shows the very young brothers.cool smiley

Nice read in Rolling Stone regarding the break-up and end of the Beatles:

"And in the End:
Fifty years ago, the Beatles went through rock’s most famous breakup. Inside the heartbreak, the brotherhood, and why the music still matters"

"They’re only the icons they are because the music was so majestically good. I’m not a musicologist, that’s not where I come from.
But all I would say is, no matter if it’s two tracks or four tracks or eight tracks, there’s a joy in the songs that they sang.
In decades and decades to come, it will never be dulled. It will never be suppressed. That joy, that infectious joy, is part of the human psyche now".

- Peter Jackson

Very much looking forward to the new film The Beatles: Get Back which unfortunately was delayed for an entire year and not due out until next August...dang it.

WINGS OVER EUROPE 1972 TOUR BUS

Description:

WINGS OVER EUROPE 1972 TOUR BUS. A Bristol Commercial Vehicles (KSW5G chassis) open topped double decker bus, used most famously by Paul McCartney and Wings, beautifully painted and decked out, on the 'Wings Over Europe Tour' of 1972. Since the tour the bus (which originally entered service in 1953) was repainted, used by a hire company, latterly repainted, sold by Sothebys in the early 1990s and eventually found in a ravine in Tenerife. Now rescued and back in the UK, the bus (also known as WNO 481) is yet to be fully restored, but still bears the circa 1990s paint job and many original features, along with all the relevant documentation and paperwork. An incredibly detailed history of the bus is available at the following link - [radiojammor.wordpress.com]

_______________________________________________________________________________

Back in 1972, so not to be outdone by Cliff Richard's Summer Holiday and probably inspired by his own idea which became the Beatles’ Magical mystery Tour, when Paul McCartney
's post-Beatles band, Wings, decided to tour Europe in the summer of 1972, he decided to travel with the band on an open-top tour bus. In an interview at the time Paul said ‘We knew we were going to tour in Europe and that the weather would be nice. The idea of being stuck in a bus all the time, going from city to city, hotel to hotel, wasn’t too appealing, so we decided to travel around in an open-top bus and got some sunshine as we travelled from one place to another. We painted the outside psychedelic like a magic bus. If you look at it very straight, very conventionally, it was quite a mad thing to do, to put a playpen on the top deck of the bus and put all the children in there while driving around Europe. It was not what you’d expect from a normal band, but we weren’t a normal band.”
The Wings over Europe tour criss-crossed Europe, starting in France in July 1972 and visited (West) Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Finland, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands and then finishing in what would have been at the time the British sector of West berlin, in August.
The partially restored bus is now up for auction in Omega Auctions
specialist The Beatles
sale tomorrow, 8th October and is expected to sell for more than £15,000.
In 2017, after rumours of the bus being spotted started to circulate McCartney posted a tweet “We’ve heard that the 1972 Wings tour bus is back on the road in the UK. Have any info on this? Send us a DM!” .
The bus is part of a sale of over 300 items relating to The Beatles

It was summer of 1979 when these glasses brought together John Lennon and Hakusan.
It was the year Margaret Thatcher became the first female British prime minister.
In Japan, the introduction of the “Walkman” greatly changed the way music was enjoyed.
And for Hakusan Megane, an unforgettable drama was unfolding.

It began with a phone call. The boutique's owner and designer and also a friend, delivered the message.

"John Lennon has shown great interest in the pair of Hakusan's glasses displayed in my boutique."

The celluloid frame belonging to these glasses was the Hakusan Original Mayfair Model, released in 1978.
At the time John had drawn away from his music and was enjoying his time with his young son Sean.
He was secretly visiting Japan during the summer. He was ordering suits and shirts at the boutique in Harajuku Tokyo.
The friendship between the boutique owner and John was not a secret, but this sudden message was hard to believe.
However, the feeling of joy was soon overcome by butterflies.

"The perennial superstar might wear the Mayfair Model."
"It would be fantastic if he could take a look at the other models too."

Needless to say, various thoughts raced through the mind.
After deep contemplation, all five original models of Hakusan Megane were taken to the designated hotel.

The first meeting with John started at Hotel Okura. A visit was made to the penthouse with the Harajuku boutique owner.
Feelings of anxiety were high; the summer's heat forgotten. The dry knock on the door echoed throughout.

Inside the room stood a piano, and a guitar discreetly propped up against the sofa.
Several pairs of his favorite glasses came into view, but there was no sight of John.
He was actually taking his nap.

"I don't want to wake him yet."
Yoko's considerate words were deeply moving. After a while, a stubble-faced John appeared.

"Hi! I'm John!"
He had a rather slim, small build. That was the first impression.
He was far from intimidating, and the comfortable mood melted away any feelings of anxiety.
During the course of the three meetings until the glasses were made, time passed in the same manner.

Surrounded by the aroma of coffee, John shared stories of music including his own works, which was a precious experience.

In the first meeting, John consulted with Yoko and picked out his favorite of the five frames.
As was expected, he picked the Mayfair Model, which he first spotted at the boutique in Harajuku.
That frame in yellow, tortoiseshell color, and the transparent type became John's favorites.

The main purpose of John's visit to Japan was to go to Karuizawa, and he wished to have his glasses ready by then.
Wanting to meet his expectations, on August 24th, two weeks after the request, three Mayfair Models were brought to him.

Surprisingly, the third meeting took place in the bedroom, as John and Yoko were relaxing on the bed.
The image was reminiscent of the Amsterdam Bed-In.

The radio on the nightstand was playing Paul McCartney’s "Jet." John turned up the volume in a casual manner,
and when the song ended, he turned it back down.
Even a simple gesture was enough to make the heart flutter.
Although the situation was awkward-a fitting for someone sitting on a bed-it was important to be professional.
A good pair of glasses depends on how well the fitting procedure is conducted.
The position and angles of the lenses, the tilt, and how they fit against the temples all come into concern.

John had a high nose bridge and his facial structure was very defined, which made the adjustment process easy.
The pre-adjustments were made to the Mayfair Model out of memory after the second meeting.
However, the actual fitting was nerve-racking.

The black-framed glasses complete with new lenses were handed to him at the same time.
"You can toss the original lenses into the waste basket,"
John said. This was a chance of a lifetime.
"If I may, could I keep one of the lenses?"

John laughingly said,
"If you don't tell anyone how blind I am, I'll give it to you."
After the fitting process, John, wearing the Mayfair, said, "Good!" with a huge smile.

The memory of this smile was the most important treasure of all.

At the time, Hakusan Megane was releasing several new designs every year. When John heard this he unexpectedly asked,
"Could you put one of each design on hold for me?"

What an amazing moment that was, a moment that would make anyone want to jump for joy.
With the promise to meet again next summer, Hakusan Megane set to work on a new model in John’s image.
It would be so splendid if he would wear these glasses. This was Hakusan Megane's hope and high spirit.
The model was named Winston, John’s middle name.

However, John and Yoko did not fly to Japan the following summer. They were working on what would be their last album, Double Fantasy.

And then a tragic incident shattered any hope of meeting John again.
On the night of December 8th, 1980, John was shot dead in the archway of the Dakota, his residence in New York.
Beside him lay the bloodstained transparent-framed Mayfair.

A photograph shows John wearing the yellow pair and signing an autograph for his fan a few hours earlier.
To think this "fan" was the culprit...

It was clear that John changed his glasses depending on the occasion.

A year and four months had passed since the first meeting at Hotel Okura. Hakusan Megane is struck by the tragedy,
but also proud of the fact that John had loved the Mayfair Model until his last moments.

An acquaintance of mine was asked by Lennon to take some records to Hotel Okura where he was staying in the summer of 1978.
Stones stayed the same hotel in 1990 and 1995 for Japan tour.
His request was Street Legal and Some Girls.

Interesting read on Lennon's last album. What struck me is how Lennon called Ono "Mother". As I have discovered through life/time, any man who calls his spouse or significant other "Mother" is someone you gotta wonder about. On another note, for me, the article perpetuates the Lennon as a saint premise. Again, just my view.

I love that revisionist history: Lennon as a saint? Boy that makes it necessary to ignore so much to think that.

And "Mother"? Oh dear, time for more deep psychological therapy.

He should have left the acid alone, he and Syd Barrett.

I strongly support your view on this.

Had it been the last album signed before some sort of natural tragedy, then it would be quirky but OK. But the guy who got the signature intended to MURDER John.

The object should be destroyed.
