Complete garbage.

He was horrible.

It's no wonder they didn't choose him. A complete waste of time.

The irony.

Obviously Best for The Beatles to go with Ringo.

Duhhhh.

RINGO.

Ouch!! I once went to see the Pete Best band play. For the first half of the show there were 2 drummers, Pete and someone else. Very dull and lifeless.

After the interval Pete did not come out and the band was OK.

I rest my case.

If you listen to the version of Love Me Do from Anthology 1, featuring Pete Best, you can clearly hear his limitations. The fact that George Martin(?) insisted on a new drummer as a member - and not just a session-guy - speaks volumes. Of course, Martin didn't rate Ringo at first, either; with session drummer Alan White filling-in on the 'LP version' of Love Me Do. Then there's another theory: Neil Aspinall fathering a child with Best's mother, Mona.

Whatever one think's of Best's capabilities, he was a peace of the early jigsaw, from their Liverpool and Hamburg beginnings. It took time, but he get's plenty of attention, too. Financially, he did rather well out of Anthology 1.

I’ll bet if I broke into your home I could make off with about six bags of garbage and not much else. And if I kidnapped you I’d then have seven bags of garbage.

GARBAGE

Give ‘Pete’s Theme’ a listen, you won’t regret it. If you had provided lead vocals I’m sure it would’ve been a massive hit.

Two drummers and one of them was the legendary Pete Best? Wow! It’s hard to believe that you found it dull and lifeless. Sounds like an orgy of pounding and banging to me.

Did they play ‘Pete’s Theme?’ That’s a lovely piece which showcases his powerhouse drumming. Also worth seeking out is their smokin’ cover of the Stones ‘Off The Hook.’

Captain, if we were spinning records in my castle of a boozy Sunday afternoon I’d reach for the Pete Best band rather than a Ringo solo album and I'm pretty sure you’d thank me for it.

It was 24th Feb 1996 (I found the tickets) and I didn't take a note of the set list!

However.... During the show he said he'd come out later to sign stuff. So quite a lot of folk went to the front, including me, with their stuff for him to sign. Everyone, but me, had Beatles' albums for him to sign - which I consider/considered to be utterly bad taste. I had one of his books - Beatle! : The Pete Best Story - . so I got first signature and a short chat about nothing in particular

Interesting, thanks.

Like many I listened to the interview when it was first broadcast. I even bought a (legit) copy of the full recordings, but simply can't bring myself to listen to them. Far too upsetting - even after so many years.

(Edit: Draft paragraph that broke too many IORR posting rules deleted)

Thanks, Rockman,
I always think about the day when I walk by the Dakota.
It is brutal that Andy Peebles put the weight of responsibility on himself - not his fault.
Lauren Bacall lived there also... wonder if John and Lauren ever spoke in the lobby.

Geez, that's something about Mr. Peebles. I didn't know this. If that was me I don't know how I would have reacted, knowing he walked by the killer. I feel pretty bad for the guy.

That's always sort of been the Oh Henry twist to the whole thing. There's a picture, this guy got a @#$%& autograph from the man and then 4 hours later shot him in the back and killed him. Its not even like John Lennon was mean to him. He gave him the time of day and an autograph which only happened because this guy is a psycho and wanted that first apparently before killing him.

Its so unbelievably sad. Obviously people die every day, and there's horrible things going on in the world all the time. People shot JFK, they shot Martin Luther King, they shot Abraham Lincoln. Its very sad they left Yoko without a husband, Sean and Julian without a father, and all of us without a talented man. I'm sorry that Peebles felt that way. Many others were near and around this guy as well and its obviously nobody's fault. Who could have predicted this strategy and I'm sorry he had to live with that undeserved guilt his whole life.

I just got back from seeing the John & Yoko: One To One documentary that's out recently. Expected it to be fine, but its John so its gotta be passably good. I was absolutely blown away. o many things to take away:

-what a great job they've done restoring that concert footage. It looked and sounded phenomenal and I truly hope they are planning to release the full concert because its always desperately needed an update, good as it is.

-Yoko is fantastic. They were so in it together, and she was so unfairly treated by so many of us. Bless her for still being around. Their usage of her performance of Kyoto Don't Worry was awesome. She killed it.

-The entire editing and montage usage throughout the film was extraordinary. Told an incredible story through the lens of television and just can't praise their work on this film enough. I could have watched for hours more.

-It really seems like right now things have never been this bad, and they do an excellent job portraying how 1972 was also pretty horrific with Nixon and Vietnam and it felt so eerily similar. We got through, maybe we will this time, but it feels totally relevant which is insane.

So many other great little moments and tidbits. I smiled, I marveled, I cried. When they ask John if he's worried about being shot... jesus. Everyone should see this and I really hope it makes a big splash. Its truly fantastic.

Beatles vs Stones

One lasted until 1970 and has given a lot since

One is still ongoing and has been reluctant about giving.

"Because they're ongoing" and whatever.

Set lists say a lot.

The Rolling Stones have had time to... they mostly haven't. It's been very few... the deluxe SOME GIRLS - except for the two country tunes - really? It wasn't all 1977-78 leftovers!!! Aside from the obvious good tunes, the rest were boring blues...and some ER leftovers!!!

It is what it is.

I can listen to whatever Beatles and know.

Can't do that with the Stones. And there never will be.

I always liked Mick mentioning that there was always a friendly rivalry but he's happy and hopeful they all came out of it friends. They could have really been jealous, but they didn't have to be. And we get to be the lucky ones that get to enjoy both simultaneously.

Mick's apparently a bit of a control freak but there are some things that are just not controllable, and he seems fine with that, which is exactly the way to be.

Beatles were a supernova that burned out quickly and the Stones are the GRNRBITW.

Yes, I knew about that, it was a busy week from Amsterdam to Dresden and then back to Berlin for 3 days, exploring: Glienicker Brücke(Spybridge)making sketches, walking a lot of kms, and then to Lüchow for the Dick Taylor concert in the Stonesfanmuseum
