One of their finest compositions. Keith very fond of it at the time.

Is there any rhythm guitar, or just Preston's funky clavinet?

Charlie so relaxed and in control. Beautiful words......yet menacing. Whole mood of song also dominated by the tonal and effing amazing dextral athletics of MT. If ever one Stones song was dominated by one 'lead' guitar, this is it. Keith great on bass. It's a gem.

the one live version (opening night '73 tour - was it done again?) I've heard was quite promising. A shame it was dropped - one of MT's highlights with the band, to be sure...

I went to timeisonourside and saw it was done live. Thanks for giving the date.
Same site has Bill as "probable" bass player. But I have an NME from 1973 where Keith says he played bass on it.

timeisonourside just mentions the one guitar on the track. That must be a rare occurence.

Mick Taylor's wah-wah lead literally rips through the speakers. It's like a screaming fire engine siren singing through the streets at full speed ahead. Definitely one of my favorite Stones moments, and whenever I listen, I reminisce about the M.T. years and what could have been had he decided to stay.

Could Ronnie ever lay down such an awesome lead guitar? Not a chance in hell.

Couldn't agree more - another neglected Stones classic.

that wa wa solo is controlled vibrato and never goes out of tune and
not many players can get that down.

Listen to taylor's opening licks on If You Can,t Rock Me very hard to get that
controlled.Woody's attempt using the wa wa from the live HBO special made me
think of Taylor and what he would of done.

Yeah, sure one of my favourites of the Taylor years. All kind of moods and tempi in it ... just great! Also one for the wish list...

No, perhaps my hasty words were misleading; I just saw (on the site you mention) that it had been performed live. T&A says it was first show of Euro '73 - so just a matter of getting a boot. It'll be interesting to hear Keith's rhythm - and how well they do the transition in tempo.

First off it's on Brussels Affair the Definative Addition....and it is quite good.

Second, this is an overlooked classic off of an overlooked release; however, the extended MT solo on an outake is spectacular.

No teasing...it's on a 5 set CD boot of Stones Alernate takes, outtakes, and unreleased material. It's called Stones Alernates.

It also has two versions of Claudine, an outtake one, and the unreleased single;
the electric or drunk version of Loving Cup, Drift Away..outtake & unreleased single.

OK...I am ready to be shot at...I think that the Stones of today could do this or TWFNO if...and this is a BIG IF...RW staid sober.

Now I have little hope for that to happen. But there is nothing inherently hard about either solo for a good guitarrist to imitate. There are probabaly a slew of students at music schools around the world that could parrot these musical lines back. The genius, to give MR. Taylor his due credit, is in creating those solos. And any one that has dilegently followed Mr. Taylor's life since he left the group knows that there have been nights in the last 3o plus years he probably would not have done well secondary to intoxication in trying to reproduce his recorded magic. So lets ease up a bit on RW. I really do not mind the idolization so much, though I think it gets excessive, but the slamming of others is a bit much.

100 Years ago - A favourite of mine from the unfairly maligned & much under rated GHS.

I have "From The Vault" (including 100 Years Ago and Silver Train live 1973). Send me an e-mail.

DP

PS: Taylor's playing on 100 Years Ago was a bit disapointing live, but the reason maybe that it was the first show etc. Great song, suits the Stones live IMO.
